To wonder why this Sainsbury's ad received more backlash than the other?

Both are Christmas ads with families celebrating Christmas. Only, when the first one was released, it received numerous complaints. Though, when the second one was released, it didn't receive any.

For the life of me, I can't tell what the differences are between the two. Why did people complain about the first one, but not the other? Many even went as far as boycotting the supermarket, though no one said the same about the ad with the second family.

Please help me work out why?

Ad 2:

TIA. I just can't seem to work it out!

Is the first once about a dad that’s died so could be triggering with covid deaths?

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 17/11/2020 13:05

Your post makes no sense. Are you attempting to start a discussion about race in advertising? Then do that that.
Why the faux confusion?

FlatulentSproutEater · 17/11/2020 13:09

Who boycotted the supermarket? Over an advert? Jesus. If that was my supermarket I'd be bloody glad they boycotted it.

Anyway. YABU. What are you really trying to say?

SquishySquirmy · 17/11/2020 13:10

I am very confused.
Did not see anything in either ad to complain about?
Both a bit dull. Am I missing something?
Which dad died?

Caeruleanblue · 17/11/2020 13:11

What where are the complaints?

GooseWhiskers · 17/11/2020 13:11

Agree with PP you know what the difference is. People in this country are racist but just can't admit it.

I think both adverts are fine, although any advert which talks about 'it being different this year' are automatically getting minus points for me Grin

MrsTWH · 17/11/2020 13:12

Are you talking about the horrendous racist comments on Twitter over the gravy advert? Absolutely made me sick that people still have attitudes like that and openly state them with no shame.

ButterMeUpScotty · 17/11/2020 13:13

They’re both crap adverts. Overly sentimental nonsense. As if people need reminded that many are without loved ones this year. I realise I’m missing the point.

GooseWhiskers · 17/11/2020 13:14

For any posters who have somehow missed the backlash over the Sainsburys adverts featuring a black family:

People are annoyed that ethnic minorities are being represented in adverts when the UK is majority white. Not really sure why if I'm honest, and this isn't just me being 'woke', I genuinely don't feel the need to see my own face when I watch tv.

People are going to be shocked when they find out Kevin the Carrot isn't a human, aren't they!?

OverTheRainbow88 · 17/11/2020 13:16

Oh I got it the wrong way around, sounds like the dad is dead in the second one...!

Now I’ve confused myself.

I’ve not hear any complaints about any adverts and I’ve not heard of anyone boycotting sainers

Hoppinggreen · 17/11/2020 13:18

My Dad didn’t ever make gravy, therefore I can’t possibly relate to this advert and will complain

Cheeeeislifenow · 17/11/2020 13:21

People are racist that is why they are complaining. Simple as. They may not go around saying the "N" word or joining KKK but there is racism everywhere.
The adverts are both fine, diversity is important for this very reason.

RightOnTheEdge · 17/11/2020 13:22

I totally missed the news about this but I've just looked at the comments on the second advert and it's so depressing.
Apparently the problem is that the first advert doesn't represent Britain and is just woke, virtual signalling.
The racism was so bad on the first video they had to turn off the comments.

LtJudyHopps · 17/11/2020 13:25

You honestly don’t get the difference between the two? All you have to do is go online and see.
As an aside, I think they’re both crap. We’ve had enough doom and gloom this year, we don’t need reminding that some people won’t be around the table or that people are separated from loved ones. The John Lewis one is crap also. I did like both Tesco and Lidl though, they’re a bit more upbeat!

LisaLee333 · 17/11/2020 13:25

Why don't you tell us why YOU think people complained about the first ad @SingularFirefly? Wink

You know, so just spit it out eh?

Foghead · 17/11/2020 13:26

I can’t believe the comments like ‘I don’t see myself in this advert’
How self centred and ridiculous. I bet they don’t see themselves in most adverts, like most people, but wouldn’t complain. It’s just blatant racism.

SingularFirefly · 17/11/2020 13:28

The complaints were mainly on Facebook and Twitter. Notice the amount of comments and responses on this tweet compared with the other one? The one with the black family came out first and it received blacklash, but when Sainsbury's released the second one with the white family, silence! Hmm

They're supposed to be releasing another one soon so it will be interesting to see if that one will receive any bashlash as well.

Laurence Fox and his Reclaim Party seem to be leading the campaign against them. They're not racist they're just defending their right to racist free speech.

KingdomofIsolation · 17/11/2020 13:30

What people don’t like the Sainsbury’s one because the family is black ?? Seriously 😳?? Why the hell does it matter I just read the comments someone saying the U.K. is 80% white and they can’t relate ????
How can you not relate to a family at Xmas that’s mad
Also is it really 80% white I live in London so it’s very diverse are there really areas where a black family is really that different ??

Pixiecut · 17/11/2020 13:39

It is blatant racism and if you think it is anything else you need to give your head a wobble and open your eyes.

The first I'd seen/heard about the Sainsbury's advert, link number 1 in OP, was people being posting comments such as:

"discusted (sic) a black family is in the Sainsburys Christmas advert".

The blatant racism is disgusting.

Hayeahnobut · 17/11/2020 13:40

Also is it really 80% white I live in London so it’s very diverse are there really areas where a black family is really that different

In some regions the proportion of BAME people is less than 5%.

M0rT · 17/11/2020 13:43

So are they all slim and gorgeous then? That they can relate to other advertising. Losers!

SimonJT · 17/11/2020 13:43

Racists are complaining because they don’t like reminding that the ethnicities they don’t like not only exist, but are given air time despite being ‘inferior’.

Nottherealslimshady · 17/11/2020 13:43

Holy fuck! People are complaining about black people in adverts on tv?!
What is wrong with people? Dont know how stuff like this shocks me every time. Racism needs to fucking do one already.

keeprocking · 17/11/2020 13:43

there is racism everywhere.

One assuimes that your statement only refers to the 'white everywhere'.
