To wonder why this Sainsbury's ad received more backlash than the other?

Both are Christmas ads with families celebrating Christmas. Only, when the first one was released, it received numerous complaints. Though, when the second one was released, it didn't receive any.

For the life of me, I can't tell what the differences are between the two. Why did people complain about the first one, but not the other? Many even went as far as boycotting the supermarket, though no one said the same about the ad with the second family.

Please help me work out why?

Ad 2:

TIA. I just can't seem to work it out!

The advert is shit! What I can't and have never understood is racism. I genuinely don't understand how people can be so outraged that people of other ethnic backgrounds exist. I'm trying hard to understand but I just can't. Why in 2020 is this an issue, it's like people who 'come out' I don't care who you love as long as you're happy. When are people going to start minding their own business and live and let live?!

greyhills · 17/11/2020 14:23

@BlackBucketOfCheese

The Twitter comments below this advert on the Sainsbury’s feed really display Britain for what it is. A racist hole, full of racists and people who apologise for racists - also known as racists.
Whilst I, like you, abhor racism, the remarks are on Twitter, which is not necessarily representative of Britain as a whole. The people on Twitter could be posting from anywhere in the world for all you know.
MintyMabel · 17/11/2020 14:25

Why pick on Sainsburys in particular for being "woke"?

Because Sainsburys are doing quite a lot of stuff that people who have no concept of anything other than white m/f seem to be overly threatened by. They are the current target. I'm sure others will be along to be kicked soon.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 17/11/2020 14:26

These stupid Twitter campaigns are co-ordinated by trolls from racist groups etc, and whilst there is racism in this country and no-one should every forget or deny it, I suspect the storm over the Tweets has merely given oxygen to the stupid twats. No one who doesn't pore over Twitter would ever have known about it. And Twitter do delete racist tweets.

They are just showing themselves up as completely stupid.

HmmSureJan · 17/11/2020 14:27

There are some racist people in this country and there they are being arseholes on Twitter. Most people would have watched it because it's The Christmas Advert and thought no more of it, certainly not been frothing over a black family. I can't begin to understand why people are bothered and it disgusts me, however I do think it's important not to brand "this country" as inherently racist because of what I genuinely believe is a racist minority. I just don't believe we are largely a racist country.

Personally I preferred the McDonalds ad followed by the Disney ad. They made me blub.

OhCaptain · 17/11/2020 14:27

This is weird.

Why did you pretend you didn't know what the difference was and then go on to post about racist comments? Hmm

thepeopleversuswork · 17/11/2020 14:28

I have to say I thought I was pretty hardened to racism in this country but this has really knocked me for six. This is like going back to the 1970s.

I don't know why I'm shocked but I am. I don't say this lightly and I don't like it generally when the soft left says this as a kneejerk thing but I'm really ashamed to be a white British person based on this.

AuntyPasta · 17/11/2020 14:30

I’d say it’s because Every-Family-Has-One Fox moaned about them supporting Black History Month and called for a Sainsbury’s boycott in October.

SquishySquirmy · 17/11/2020 14:31

WTF really?
That's bloody awful!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 17/11/2020 14:33

Also is it really 80% white I live in London so it’s very diverse are there really areas where a black family is really that different ??

The comments about the ad are racist.

But in fact uk is more like 85% white and in many towns outside london/bigger cities you will never see a single person who is not white.

chomalungma · 17/11/2020 14:33

All these adverts featuring people from groups who have been under represented in the media - they certainly bring out the haters.

It's good to see diversity on TV. I can just imagine the perfect advert which would generate complaints from loads of people.

HallieKnight · 17/11/2020 14:33

Because the first one was released first. They both should have ended up on the cutting room floor. They look more like a save the children ad Hmm

SleepingStandingUp · 17/11/2020 14:34

@GooseWhiskers

For any posters who have somehow missed the backlash over the Sainsburys adverts featuring a black family:

Link to article

People are annoyed that ethnic minorities are being represented in adverts when the UK is majority white. Not really sure why if I'm honest, and this isn't just me being 'woke', I genuinely don't feel the need to see my own face when I watch tv.

People are going to be shocked when they find out Kevin the Carrot isn't a human, aren't they!?

Thanks, much more useful than ops fake wide eyes bewilderment.
chomalungma · 17/11/2020 14:35

@AuntyPasta

I’d say it’s because Every-Family-Has-One Fox moaned about them supporting Black History Month and called for a Sainsbury’s boycott in October.
I love the irony in this - with Fox complaining about being boycotted by people.
SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 14:35

@OhCaptain

This is weird.

Why did you pretend you didn't know what the difference was and then go on to post about racist comments? Hmm

It's called "sarcasm".
Joynot · 17/11/2020 14:39

The racist comments on Twitter were shocking. Absolutely appalling. Blatant, no attempt to disguise it.

HmmSureJan · 17/11/2020 14:40

Twitter is a cesspit, and I genuinely believe it is causing long term perhaps permanent damage to our society.

OhCaptain · 17/11/2020 14:43

It's called "sarcasm".

It's a pretty poor example of it, IMO.

And unnecessary, too.

Faux wide-eyed innocence is just irritating. Say what you mean and have an adult discussion!

myneighboursarerude · 17/11/2020 14:43

@Pixiecut

It is blatant racism and if you think it is anything else you need to give your head a wobble and open your eyes.

The first I'd seen/heard about the Sainsbury's advert, link number 1 in OP, was people being posting comments such as:

"discusted (sic) a black family is in the Sainsburys Christmas advert".

The blatant racism is disgusting.

This.
titchy · 17/11/2020 14:44

So what are Sainbos doing about it then? Have they now removed the advert featuring the black family?

Lindy2 · 17/11/2020 14:45

Those racist comments on Twitter have to be from an organised trolling surely. There's just too many, all vile and blatant racism, to just be coincidental.

I watched both ads. They're fine if a little uninspired. I had to look at the Twitter link to actually see what the fuss was about. I thought it was probably the Christmas without the dad that was the issue, especially with many families being in similar situations due to Coronavirus it is somewhat insensitive. I I honestly didn't think that one of the families being black would be an issue. In fact I don't actually think it's an issue for the vast majority of normal people.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 17/11/2020 14:48

Ah.

Sainsbury's were major supporters of and donors to the Remain campaign.

This is troll farm managed, I betcha.

Hopefully Sainsbury's and general non-racists at large will find that it gives a platform to show how idiotic the various comments are.

BIWI · 17/11/2020 14:49

@titchy

So what are Sainbos doing about it then? Have they now removed the advert featuring the black family?
Why on earth should they?! Just because a few racist snowflakes are offended?!

More reason for it to stay, and to be given extra airtime.

Gilead · 17/11/2020 14:49

Fantasising that this country is not inherently racist is not helpful. It really is and this just makes it clearer.

FAQs · 17/11/2020 14:50

There was mention of this in my local newspaper (on their FB group) the top liked comment was a twat saying ‘that’s Sainsbury's off my list of shops then, my skins not dark enough to shop there’ I kid you not!

When I responded nicely to start with but it ended up with me calling him a racist twat, I was jumped on by people calling me Karen, woke and he is entitled to freedom of speech.

The article ended up being removed. Still a long way to go sadly Angry
