To wonder why this Sainsbury's ad received more backlash than the other?

Both are Christmas ads with families celebrating Christmas. Only, when the first one was released, it received numerous complaints. Though, when the second one was released, it didn't receive any.

For the life of me, I can't tell what the differences are between the two. Why did people complain about the first one, but not the other? Many even went as far as boycotting the supermarket, though no one said the same about the ad with the second family.

Please help me work out why?

TIA. I just can't seem to work it out!

@Foghead

Do these people forget that Jesus (ie the whole point of Christmas) wasn’t a white Anglo Saxon or European?
Bloody Jesus. Coming over 'ere, taking our thorns, and our... lumber.
switswooo · 17/11/2020 15:39

Yes, I agree. Unfortunately, the 'complaints' were mainly blatant racism.

Yes, I've only read the Indy article but the social media posts it showed (below) were racist.

“The UK is 80 per cent white. Do Sainsburys not have data on who actually shops there lol?” one person wrote.

Another added: “This doesn’t represent me, I don’t see myself in this at all. I can’t relate.”

A third person wrote: “Another one added to the banned list. Go woke go broke."

movingonup20 · 17/11/2020 15:40

@KingdomofIsolation in answer to your question, the population is approx 85% white at last census (probably will decrease, census is due next year). I can go weeks without seeing a non white person to be honest, there's only a handful of non white families in my town and I don't cross paths unless I go to their restaurant or happen to bump into them out walking (very different to where I lived before - I'm forever whinging at my dp that I can't buy ingredients locally)

BlackBucketOfCheese · 17/11/2020 15:45

Those racist comments on Twitter have to be from an organised trolling surely. There's just too many, all vile and blatant racism, to just be coincidental.

It would be nice to believe that, wouldn’t it?
But as a woman of colour, living in the U.K., those comments are far from unusual.
Racism is an every day occurrence in my life, I truly believe those views are representative of huge swathes of Britain.
I work face to face with every level of a British society every single work day and not one day goes past without utter shit like those comments and they mostly go unchallenged.

The thing with Mumsnet is it is mostly populated by educated/questioning/curious/cultured or middle class people (not all, but it was certainly that way compared to other parenting forums for a long time) and they want things to be fair and good. They hope, nay think things are good or improving. They hope everyone is decent like themselves.
Mumsnet members get themselves set up with Brexit referendums and general elections just knowing that their “good side” will win. And then it is heartbreak when they realise the majority don’t think the same as them. I’ve seen it with Brexit, countless elections etc.

It is lovely that Mumsnet thinks the majority of Britain isn’t racist/happy to sit around racists and not say anything other than online (which is also racism) but the reality is far from true.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 17/11/2020 15:48

Racists gonna be racist at Christmas.🤷‍♀️ All they want is to celebrate the birth of a Palestinian radical and a generous ancient Turkish bloke without having to look at pesky minorities on telly.🤣🎅

Don't say that 😂😂😂. Meghan Kelly did confirm live on air "Don't worry kids, Santa is white" and Jesus too for good measure - definitely not a radical brown socialist who was against authority and wanted to overthrow the establishment.

user1471565182 · 17/11/2020 15:49

Not that im particularly blaming irish people, but there was a mixed race couple there who had to move abroad because of the abuse they received for being in a Lidls advert. All over the UK and Ireland people feel they've been given a license to behave like pieces of shit through the media's 'woke, virtue signalling' bashlack dialogue. And as I say a lot on here (which has a massive racism problem aswell) you can be racist without shouting the N word.

It's because one advert has only black people and there are racist people out there. Not sure why you are confused. It's even made headlines with the reason why.

DioneTheDiabolist · 17/11/2020 15:53

For some people, it's more about the fact that people are sick to death of the disproportionate amount of black, and mixed-race people on TV - especially in adverts.

And these people are called racists.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 17/11/2020 15:53

-For some people, it's more about the fact that people are sick to death of the disproportionate amount of black, and mixed-race people on TV - especially in adverts. The fact that 9 out of 10 adverts you see have people of colour in them these days, (and many dramas and other TV programmes too,) just smacks of pure box-ticking.

Who were we supposed to complain to in the eighties when we didn’t see black face on television for months?

Do you know what it is like to never, ever see someone who even remotely looks like you on television as a child? Or to see your family represented in the media? To dye your ballet rights with tea because they only come in “nude”?

Do you know what it is like to only be represented on television as something to laugh at or something or dance to?

BlackBucketOfCheese · 17/11/2020 15:55

@LisaLee333, those people you’ve mentioned, they are racists. Don’t try and dress it up as some passionate quest for exact statistical representation in the media. It is a racist dog whistle.

Calmandmeasured1 · 17/11/2020 15:55

I've never seen these adverts before but both are utterly crap. They look like they've been put together by amateurs. Nothing interesting, exciting or emotive about them.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 17/11/2020 15:58

Diversity is not just about putting people of colour in everything FFS. It's actually farcical now. And lots of people can see it. Calling everyone a racist who comments that there is a disproportionate amount of people of colour on TV is ridiculous.

AKA I’m an angry racist but I’ll try to dress it up as intellect so you feel like you can’t call me out and when you do I can Lord it over you.

chomalungma · 17/11/2020 15:59

Minority groups, people who are often 'different' - they've all been represented on TV in ways that fuel stereotypes in the past.

It's great to see that the media is trying to change those stereotypes.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 17/11/2020 15:59

@BlackBucketOfCheese

You're spot on. She's basically just stated people are sick of seeing black people /mixed race people on tv. Jesus Christ.

@LisaLee333 you're the voice of the people then yes? Hmm

There was mention of this in my local newspaper (on their FB group) the top liked comment was a twat saying ‘that’s Sainsbury's off my list of shops then, my skins not dark enough to shop there’ I kid you not!

I seen a similar thing in Sainsbury’s for ad about their clothing, it’s a man advertising a coat , he is black and one of the comment was “do you sell clothes for white people as well?”

chomalungma · 17/11/2020 16:01

@LisaLee333

I rest my case. Straight away, several posters are crying RACIST at the people who dare have a view that doesn't fit the far left narrative. A really predictable and lazy insult, spewed by the most narrow-minded of bigots.

Cheers for proving me right. Wine

Why are you saying "Far left"?
user1471565182 · 17/11/2020 16:01

Dont like seeing black people, Lisa? you're a racist.

Dont like being called a racist for being racist? I dont give a fuck.

Dashel · 17/11/2020 16:02

I don’t care about the skin colour, I just wish the Christmas adverts were cuter and more of a distraction and nothing about being a different sort of Christmas.

Can’t we have some cute reindeer or chipmunks or something non Covid related?

On non Christmas adverts go as multicultural as you like, but leave the Christmas adverts cute and cheesy!

On a slightly different note on adverts I love the Malteser adverts which are very inclusive and have smutty jokes in them as well. Totally brilliant! I think it’s long past time that things were shaken up a bit and made more inclusive.

LordOfTheOnionRings · 17/11/2020 16:03

Well racists disliked the advert with the black family because they're a bunch of racists. Get in the bin racists and if you come at me with stats, bore off racist

user1471565182 · 17/11/2020 16:03

And 'far left' FFS.

Yes, we all know Lenin and Mao's ultimate aim was putting out more christmas adverts with BAME in.

chomalungma · 17/11/2020 16:03

There should be more diversity in adverts.

More LGBT people in adverts.
And how about LGBT people from a range of backgrounds.

That would certainly bring out the homophobes, the transphobes and the racists.

user1471565182 · 17/11/2020 16:04

Which brings me to this meme

To wonder why this Sainsbury's ad received more backlash than the other?
chomalungma · 17/11/2020 16:05

I wonder what proportion of adverts featuring trans people would be enough to bring out the MN threads?
