To wonder why this Sainsbury's ad received more backlash than the other?

Both are Christmas ads with families celebrating Christmas. Only, when the first one was released, it received numerous complaints. Though, when the second one was released, it didn't receive any.

For the life of me, I can't tell what the differences are between the two. Why did people complain about the first one, but not the other? Many even went as far as boycotting the supermarket, though no one said the same about the ad with the second family.

Please help me work out why?

Ad 1:
Ad 2:

TIA. I just can't seem to work it out!

@LisaLee333 They called you a racist, because you are in fact, a racist. Is there supposed to be a time delay before that is pointed out?

Buddytheelf85 · 17/11/2020 16:07

For some people, it's more about the fact that people are sick to death of the disproportionate amount of black, and mixed-race people on TV - especially in adverts.

But WHY are they ‘sick to death’ of it? What do you mean by ‘disproportionate’? Disproportionate to what?

Also, most pop-up ads on the internet, and literature you get through the post, school billboards, catalogues, college prospectuses, etc etc, have a laughable amount of people of colour strewn throughout them too...

What’s a ‘laughable amount of people of colour’? What makes the amount ‘laughable’?

Diversity is not just about putting people of colour in everything FFS. It's actually farcical now.

No one’s saying diversity is ‘just about putting people of colour in everything’. Absolutely no one.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/11/2020 16:08

my only thought was I have never met a man who makes gravy!

Same. I prefer the second advert. I can relate to that but not the first one and it has nothing to do with the ethnicity of the actors. My father died when I was young. He never made gravy. How the family act about their father is how I would have liked mine to be, not that it was at all. My thought on reflection is that it is a shame the the black family was not chosen for the second ad as for me it is so much better. The white family was probably chosen because the racists would have crawled out to create a narrative that this is one less * on the planet.

The Twitter link with the comments still standing is appalling. The now deactivated accounts must be so much worse. At least, for once, Twitter is on this.

titchy · 17/11/2020 16:10

@chomalungma

There should be more diversity in adverts.

More LGBT people in adverts.
And how about LGBT people from a range of backgrounds.

That would certainly bring out the homophobes, the transphobes and the racists.

Funnily enough I've noticed a lot more adverts featuring gay /lesbian couples. And transmen/transwomen too for that matter. (McCains, Starbucks, Pantene, Nationwide for example). Have these adverts caused a Twitter backlash? Or a MN backlash?
titchy · 17/11/2020 16:11

@chomalungma

I wonder what proportion of adverts featuring trans people would be enough to bring out the MN threads?
Except there haven't been any, so maybe MN isn't a transphobic as they say Wink
feellikeanalien · 17/11/2020 16:11

Both adverts are, in my opinion, insensitive shite. If DD had seen either of them she would have been really upset since this will be her first Christmas without her Dad.

Twitter is a cesspit and there are some really horrible views on there. Sadly people from both sides of the political spectrum are trying to use race to set people against each other. We are going backwards instead of forwards.

DioneTheDiabolist · 17/11/2020 16:12

Straight away, several posters are crying RACIST at the people who dare have a view that doesn't fit the far left narrative.

No @LisaLee333, posters are calling RACIST on people who don't like seeing black people on TV. The far left narrative would oppose the ad on the grounds of manipulating the masses to indulge in a massive, annual consumerist holiday with all the profit, exploitation and waste that it entails.

multivac · 17/11/2020 16:13

For some people, it's more about the fact that people are sick to death of the disproportionate amount of black, and mixed-race people on TV - especially in adverts.

In fairness, in that first advert, like, EVERYONE is black! Like, all the characters! And that, like, totally never happens in real life. I mean, when might you be in a family house, with a family, and EVERYONE in the family has the same skin colour?

It's just not normal.

romeolovedjulliet · 17/11/2020 16:14

not impressed with either, some random messing about with a camera making a video ? prefer the black advert marginally better.

MoonJelly · 17/11/2020 16:15

Not everyone moaning about this advert is racist. For some people, it's more about the fact that people are sick to death of the disproportionate amount of black, and mixed-race people on TV - especially in adverts. The fact that 9 out of 10 adverts you see have people of colour in them these days, (and many dramas and other TV programmes too,) just smacks of pure box-ticking.

Even if that were true, so what? Why does it matter so much to you, @LisaLee333? How does it hurt you?

So far as most people are concerned, these adverts simply depict other people, they really don't care about the colour of their skin.

howaboutchocolate · 17/11/2020 16:15

The people complaining saying the UK is 95% white or whatever are missing the point entirely, and wrong.

A third of pupils in English primary schools are from ethnic minority backgrounds, and the figure is rising. 2/5 of them speak English as a second language.

There are just a lot of old white people around skewing the population totals. But they're not who a lot of advertising is aimed at.

And if they really want adverts to reflect the demographics of the country, they'd be happy with 1/3 of all advertising aimed at kids having actors from ethnic minority backgrounds.

They just think the UK is majority white British because they either live in areas that are and assume everywhere else is the same, or because they are watching TV and adverts that don't accurately represent the demographics. Oh, the irony.

MedusasBadHairDay · 17/11/2020 16:17

If it walks like a racist and quacks like a racist..

Softly off topic but, my dad makes an amazing roast dinner and would totally sing about it. In fact I'm kind of hoping he doesn't see the Sainsburys advert in case it gives him ideas. I'm not normally one for Xmas adverts, they're often either too twee or too sad, but this one just made me think of normal family in jokes and silliness. It was ok as far as adverts go. I'm amazed, but not surprised, that people are at all offended by it.

MoonJelly · 17/11/2020 16:21

If these ads mean racists boycott Sainsbury's, I'm delighted. The fact that I'm less likely to come across racists and bigots when I go there is a major incentive.

chomalungma · 17/11/2020 16:23

Yes.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 17/11/2020 16:24

far left is bloody hilarious.
What a desperate attempt to shut down the fact that you have just spouted racist bollocks.

“I know, I’ll use pseudo intellectual trigger words I’ve heard on a Facebook comment section under ladbible that Uncle Ken shared. That will either stump them, make them feel silly or shit them up”.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 17/11/2020 16:29

@LisaLee333 They called you a racist, because you are in fact, a racist. Is there supposed to be a time delay before that is pointed out?

✅ absolutely

JudyShakes · 17/11/2020 16:29

I actually had no idea that some areas were so white

Get out of your London bubble. Plenty of places in the UK where you won't see a BAME person in the street, school, shop, doctor's surgery, pub, cafe ...

Not saying it's a good thing, it's just not unusual.

Foghead · 17/11/2020 16:29

what is the actual Left Narrative that involves Black people in adverts? (Genuine question) what is their aim?

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 17/11/2020 16:30

Why would anyone be 'sick to death' to see black people in adverts? Even if it was 9 out of 10 adverts (which it really is not). They are actors playing roles which advertise the product. Why would anyone be 'sick to death' of it?

DryRoastPeanut · 17/11/2020 16:30

This is the second thread I’ve seen here today about these dull adverts. I think Sainsbury’s are trying to push via mn.

PicsInRed · 17/11/2020 16:33

Just like the Tesco lady - though the racists were at least open about what pissed them off there. Hmm They're pathetic.

PicsInRed · 17/11/2020 16:36

The fact that 9 out of 10 adverts you see have people of colour in them these days

Quelle horreur! Faints

Because they're revolting, vile little racists and she's too fucking thick to even conceal it.

How would you know they were racist if you passed them in the biscuit aisle? How would it affect your shopping experience?

I despise racism but this virtue signalling is irksome.
