To wonder why this Sainsbury's ad received more backlash than the other?

Both are Christmas ads with families celebrating Christmas. Only, when the first one was released, it received numerous complaints. Though, when the second one was released, it didn't receive any.

For the life of me, I can't tell what the differences are between the two. Why did people complain about the first one, but not the other? Many even went as far as boycotting the supermarket, though no one said the same about the ad with the second family.

Please help me work out why?

TIA. I just can't seem to work it out!

Here are some of the reasons people complained about the advert.

It’s depressing, isn’t it?

chickenyhead · 21/11/2020 12:29

Shameful. It isn't the majority view thankfully.

DonnaQuixotedelaManchester · 21/11/2020 12:56

Yes @chickenhead shameful and a minority, magnified by social media.

What can we do to offset it? Campaign to Sainsbury’s to get it reinstated? Flood the internet with images of black shoppers in supermarkets?

A high majority of the discussions and responses seem to be shock and confusion at the blatant racism. I hope that is true because that is quite reassuring.

chickenyhead · 21/11/2020 13:49

I think that instead of reducing the exposure of the population to the realities of family life in equally relevant British homes, exposure should be increased and maintained.

Just because a demographic only makes up a small percentage of the total doesn't invalidate their rights to be represented in mainstream media as equally relevant.

Racism should be called out for what it is. Publicly and loudly. Maybe if our politicians weren't racist then this wouldn't be an issue.

It depends where you're looking. A leftie news site, very much as you describe. Lawrence Fox and his ilk, thousands of racist snowflakes.

Mortgageandmoney · 21/11/2020 14:12

Where I live the population is over 97% white. It's not a small population, or terribly rural either. Living somewhere mostly white is no excuse for racism.

I’m a real soppy cow, especially at this time of year. My late ddad often used to cook at Christmas and this ad reminded me of him. It is overly sentimental, as are most Christmas ads which is why I love them but I feel very sorry for anyone who can come away from watching such a lovely seasonal ad feeling angry.

chickenyhead · 21/11/2020 15:08

I don't even think that it's anger. It's suppression, the need to control, the need for things to stay the same.

There was literally nothing in that advert to make anyone who eats meat angry.

Safeguardingconcern · 21/11/2020 15:19

It really is a sad reflection on our society that people feel more able to relate to a family of carrots than to a family of black people. Words fail me.

SingularFirefly · 21/11/2020 18:12

@SleepingStandingUp

Part 3 was a bit lame
Yeah, it was a little anticlimactic!

Thanks everyone who answered my question. Wink I was disgusted when I first saw all the complaints just because the ad featured a black family. I'm glad that the majority of you all feel the same. I still haven't seen any complaints for the second one. 8 official complaints as well? Wow.
