To wonder why this Sainsbury's ad received more backlash than the other?

Both are Christmas ads with families celebrating Christmas. Only, when the first one was released, it received numerous complaints. Though, when the second one was released, it didn't receive any.

For the life of me, I can't tell what the differences are between the two. Why did people complain about the first one, but not the other? Many even went as far as boycotting the supermarket, though no one said the same about the ad with the second family.

Please help me work out why?

Ad 2:

TIA. I just can't seem to work it out!

I find both adverts irritating but then again I am a Scrooge and hate all Xmas adverts in equal measure. I don't get why people go nuts over the John Lewis adverts either. They're all just sentimental twaddle. The Tesco one is the worst this year. There's no naughty list so we we can all be as greedy and gravy as we like. And relax!!!!

Twizbe · 17/11/2020 13:43

I saw the gravy one the other day. I thought it was sweet. Nothing to complain at.

Crinkle77 · 17/11/2020 13:44

Should say grabby

BigBadVoodooHat · 17/11/2020 13:44

@Hollyhocksarenotmessy

Your post makes no sense. Are you attempting to start a discussion about race in advertising? Then do that that. Why the faux confusion?
I loathe the faux-naif, wide-eyed 'please help me try to understand' schtick that is rather popular on here at the minute.

They always know exactly what they're trying to say. So why not just fucking say so. Hmm

GetOffYourHighHorse · 17/11/2020 13:45

'The complaints were mainly on Facebook and Twitter. '

Twitter and Facebook aren't always representative of a general opinion though are they. When you say 'complaints' you imply official ofcom complaints. You actually mean racist trolls have made racist comments on Twitter. Sadly we know there are racists out there so I've no idea why the disingenuity.

Both adverts are lovely, as I'm sure most people agree.

MintyMabel · 17/11/2020 13:45

You know why. Stop pretending.

MedusasBadHairDay · 17/11/2020 13:46

@KingdomofIsolation

What people don’t like the Sainsbury’s one because the family is black ?? Seriously 😳?? Why the hell does it matter I just read the comments someone saying the U.K. is 80% white and they can’t relate ???? How can you not relate to a family at Xmas that’s mad Also is it really 80% white I live in London so it’s very diverse are there really areas where a black family is really that different ??
Yeah, a lot of Britain is really white - and somehow these extremely white areas seem to contain a lot of people who say shit like "were becoming a minority in our own country" Hmm
AcornAutumn · 17/11/2020 13:47

I hope mum doesn’t see the dead dad one. 😱

AuntyPasta · 17/11/2020 13:48

It reminds me of this

www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/co-meath-couple-lay-low-due-to-racist-abuse-after-lidl-advert-1.4041975

It’s funny how language evolves. It used to be that racists complained about ‘political correctness gone mad’ and now it’s ‘virtue signalling’ when a person or group isn’t bigoted like them.

zatarontoast · 17/11/2020 13:48

I'm actually surprised that people are surprised tbh. Was is the Tesco ad last year featuring a Muslim family that brought out the racists in arms? All of these "racism hasn't gone away" posts I'm seeing on social media are the thing that shocks me. Who on earth thought we lived in a racism free panacea?

FWIW I thought the advert was lovely.

maddiemookins16mum · 17/11/2020 13:48

They’re both annoying. I hate these kind of ads, give me a cartoon carrot or a cat that burns the house down any day.

LondonJax · 17/11/2020 13:52

I'm glad they're boycotting Sainsbury's. I don't have to share floor space with them on my weekly shop then. Much better.

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/11/2020 13:58

There was an M&S advert on Facebook recently with a lady wearing a headscarf and her children, not white. There were quite few comments welcoming the diversity, and more complaining about it, saying that M&S had caved and were trying to be woke, just for having a non white family! I don't even know why anyone would pick up on this. You are just looking at a family, that's it. The default doesn't have to be white, we have so many ethnicities in this country, it should just be normal.

Lulalulabelle · 17/11/2020 13:59

I’ve only seen the gravy one. I didn’t realise there was a second one

KingdomofIsolation · 17/11/2020 14:01

I actually had no idea that some areas were so white and how awful some views are about things this is just an advert with a family it’s really awful and disgusting some of the comments on that link about it

The thing is though as I said earlier I’m in London it’s diverse and my children have friends of all faiths and colours BUT I’ve always taught then ‘we are all the same’ etc if we discuss it but actually is that wrong an i not doing enough ? Do I need to do more and what because we aren’t actually the same are we when one group in society has things a lot harder ? Should I be highlighting that to educate my white children ? Sorry if I’ve worded it clumsily but I’m thinking after reading this am I doing enough to address these issues myself

BlackBucketOfCheese · 17/11/2020 14:01

The Twitter comments below this advert on the Sainsbury’s feed really display Britain for what it is. A racist hole, full of racists and people who apologise for racists - also known as racists.

Yes, I agree. Unfortunately, the 'complaints' were mainly blatant racism. I'm not sure if there were any Ofcom complaints. I just saw the first one on Facebook then the second one on Twitter when it was released. I also saw a thread on here recently about ads having more POC in them, so I wasn't entirely surprised by all the responses, though when you see the differences in comments between the two ads it's shocking!

Racists gonna be racist at Christmas.🤷‍♀️ All they want is to celebrate the birth of a Palestinian radical and a generous ancient Turkish bloke without having to look at pesky minorities on telly.🤣🎅

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/11/2020 14:03

I saw the gravy ad the other day and didn't like it but it was nothing to do with the family, to be honest I can't believe anyone would get worked up about that it's pathetic. I just thought it was really all over the place, the graphic style was horrible and it didn't feel Christmassy. I've just watched the second ad and that's equally rubbish, same terrible jumping around style that I'm not following easily.

All the Christmas ads I've seen so far have been shite. Where are all the good advertising people these days, have they all been furloughed??

SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 14:04

No it doesn't. It just shows that there are some vocal racist cunts with access to the internet.
Eugenieonegin · 17/11/2020 14:07

@GooseWhiskers

For any posters who have somehow missed the backlash over the Sainsburys adverts featuring a black family:

Link to article

People are annoyed that ethnic minorities are being represented in adverts when the UK is majority white. Not really sure why if I'm honest, and this isn't just me being 'woke', I genuinely don't feel the need to see my own face when I watch tv.

People are going to be shocked when they find out Kevin the Carrot isn't a human, aren't they!?

Aren’t they just!
augustusglupe · 17/11/2020 14:09

I'm not keen on either advert, both are boring. The only thing I can think of is that they're both a bit stereotypical. Are they both being shown? I've only seen the one with the black family. Can't see what's to complain about though.

Floralnomad · 17/11/2020 14:14

I don’t like the Sainsbury’s adverts because they are shite , I couldn’t care less whether the people are black , white or a mix of both , they are just crap adverts .

puffinkoala · 17/11/2020 14:15

Did people complain about the Amazon ballerina ad too? Or the John Lewis one with the monster under the bed?

Why pick on Sainsburys in particular for being "woke"?

Have people really got nothing better to do than complain about the colour of the skin of the people in adverts? Clearly not, despite covid and everything - or maybe that's why, because they're spending too much time indoors.

Billben · 17/11/2020 14:16

I wouldn’t complain about the ads but they are both truly rubbish 😂 Black family, white family, makes no difference. They are both just as embarrassingly bad. I’m cringing for the poor people in them 😂
