@Duemarch2021

I payed with card online as no cash on me.. suppose i could have found couple of quid somewhere but i just think, they get paid to do their job just like i do and everyone else so why do they need a tip? I may sound harsh but i just don't understand it
Not harsh at all, Like, I work in customer service/retail, no tips, what makes some industries tip worthy and others not? I don't tip. Our local delivery guy from the chippy just brings the tap n go thing for cards, no cash on him either
Sobeyondthehills · 16/11/2020 04:34

I have worked in the retail sector and the hospitality industry (including delivering food) and I don't tip anyone.

The only time I have tipped is when DS as a baby threw up over everything and the staff where there straight away, cleaned it up and got us new food to take away.

I feel like I live in a different world to most of Mumsnet. I tip in restaurants because that's widely accepted. Had never even heard of tipping taxi drivers or delivery drivers until I read about it here. After reading all the guilt trips here I felt obliged to try tipping people. Tried to tip my hairdresser, he flat out refused to take it, laughed and asked if I thought he didn't understand how to set a price and run a business. I think he felt patronised. Same response from the lady who does my eyebrows. Taxi driver looked at me like this Confused and said 'I think you've made a mistake' and refused the money. And delivery drivers leave the food on the doorstep, knock the door and are back in their car before we have the door open. Tipping is definitely not expected in my experience.

Nancydrawn · 16/11/2020 05:24

Yes, you tip. Even before I moved to the States I tipped service people, and now it's an ingrained habit. I've never in my life had a taxi driver or a delivery person refuse to take a tip, at home or over here. I'm with the PP: if you can afford a takeaway, you can afford a couple quid for the person who went out in the night to bring it to your house. And if it's wet/snowy/your house is in the middle of nowhere, you should tip more.

Blueberries0112 · 16/11/2020 05:30

In America, we always tip drivers

BritWifeinUSA · 16/11/2020 05:34

Anyone who thinks it’s like tipping the posh or doesn’t understand the difference between salary and gig jobs. The poster is paid the same whether he has 10 letters to deliver or 150. He also gets sick pay, paid holidays, etc. The pizza delivery person is paid by the delivery. In slow times he could be sitting at the shop for an hour or more waiting for an order to come in to be delivered. He’s not paid for his waiting time.

For those who think it’s “not their responsibility to cover for employers who are not paying enough and don’t want to line the pockets of the owners” then don’t order the bloody thing! By ordering it you are already lining the pockets of management.

And if you can’t afford a few quid on top of an overpriced cheese and tomato on toast then make it yourself.

BritWifeinUSA · 16/11/2020 05:34

Postie! Not posh or poster!

Fruitloops34 · 16/11/2020 05:40

What many of you are failing to realise is that you already unwittingly tip as there will be a delivery charge included within the price. Sometimes it can be as high as £2-£3 quid so I’m not giving them even more.

Temporarything · 16/11/2020 05:44

I tip hairdresser. Window cleaner at Xmas. Never thought of tipping Domino delivery but probably will now.

Pretty sure not all that delivery charge goes to the person who actually makes the delivery.

Personally I tip via the app I order from. I've been a waitress and really valued the tips I received.

rainkeepsfallingdown · 16/11/2020 06:16

I always tip generously in restaurants, but the tip generally gets split between the waiting staff and the kitchen. The kitchen staff make my lovely meal, and if there's a problem, the waiting staff get it resolved. They all work to ensure I get something nice to eat.

With deliveries... the kitchen staff make the meal. If there's a problem, it won't get fixed. At best, you'll get a credit/partial refund. The delivery drivers don't liaise between me and the kitchen, they just bring me my food. There's just not the same level of service as wait staff.

If there's particularly shitty weather, I'll often tip out of sympathy, but I don't really like tipping for takeaways. It's the premise of rewarding good service without receiving good service (they can never find my house first time) and without knowing if the food is any good. (Usually, but not always, you tip before tasting the meal.) Tipping for food that doesn't taste good doesn't sit right with me.

If I get good service from Sainsbury's/Tesco/Asda/etc, I message the chain via social media to give them details of who helped me that day. I figure customer praise has got to be worth something.

I don't tip via Uber anymore, because the drivers don't find out you've tipped them until they've rated you, and often they'll mark you down for no fathomable reason. I'm so careful not to slam doors, to not twist the seatbelts, to be polite, to explain where the drop off is if unclear... etc. The last straw was when I tipped generously and saw my star rating go down at the same time - it really irritated me giving money to someone who had marked me down!

With Domino's, I don't think there's even a tip option, like there is with UberEATS and Deliveroo? Just the option to round up your bill for charity. I've only ever tipped people via card, even pre-Covid.

I tip, I used to deliver takeaway food, from pizza, chinese, puddings etc.

Its a low wage, around 40% of my wage went on fuel and the increased insurance on my moped. You put up with a lot of crap, a surprisingly number of ‘customers’ will steal the food at their door and refuse to pay, when this happens the cost is taken from the driver. Or customers saying a certain dish etc is missing when it isn’t was another common one, again you would be charged for the ‘missing’ item.

Tips made a huge difference.

That is not a tip, that is paying for a service.
Fruitloops34 · 16/11/2020 06:21

@Ineedaduvetday Can’t speak for Domino’s but I delivered for an Indian takeaway and the delivery charge for every order was mine to keep. That was the whole point of it being called “delivery charge”

Fruitloops34 · 16/11/2020 06:23

@SimonJT So I’m already giving someone £3 to drive a mile to my house and then I’m supposed to tip on top of that? It’s a tip however you look at it.

Fair enough

lboogy · 16/11/2020 06:32

With food delivery apps you can tip so I do. I never carry cash so can't tip with dominos. If I have change then I'll give £2. I tip my hair dresser too.

But generally I do think the industry should pay workers so it's not left to the discretion of customers to ensure a decent wage.

Glossyrocks · 16/11/2020 06:43

Nope, although hardly ever have takeaways delivered.

pylongazer · 16/11/2020 06:48

National minimum wage is so high now that tipping isn't necessary

Dinosauraddict · 16/11/2020 06:52

We have regular takeaways and I never tip in cash. I don't even keep cash around. I pay by card over the phone/online. If I'm using something like Deliveroo then I always add the £1 for charity or whatever it is at the bottom but that's it.

KitKatastrophe · 16/11/2020 06:53

Do the people who always tip, also tip supermarket delivery drivers?

I've never tipped a delivery driver. Maybe if paying cash I might say "keep the change". I've worked minimum wage jobs before (retail, hospitality) and never had a tip. I dont understand why its seen as important in food service but no other minimum wage job. If these people arent expected to survive on minimum wage without tips, how come people who work in shops, call centres and behind the scenes are?

KitKatastrophe · 16/11/2020 06:55

Sounds like you just had a crappy employer. It's not the responsibility of honest paying customers to supplement that.
Pumpertrumper · 16/11/2020 06:57

Tipping is absolutely not necessary and no we don’t do it. Delivery drivers get the same minimum wage as the rest of the country.

I worked minimum wage in retail for years and nobody ever tipped me.
Warehouse staff
Receptionists
Call centre staff
Retail workers
Leafleters

All on minimum wage but non get tipped. It’s not the same as America where those working in hospitality can be paid $1 an hour and HAVE to make tips to survive, but because it’s such a cultural expectation in the US lots in the U.K. now expect it.

We only ever tip for table service and the service has to actually be good!

KitKatastrophe · 16/11/2020 07:05

I HATE the whole practice of tipping. It makes me shudder. I feel like I’m treating an adult like a child by handing them £2 pocket money.
I agree with this. Especially when I was younger. My (now) husband and I won a cruise when I was 21 and I felt so patronising to tip the 40-something waiters and bar staff. I still did, because I know the conditions and pay on cruise ships are pretty shoddy, but I felt like such a bitch. They didnt know I had paid next to nothing for the cruise, so they probably thought I was some young rich bitch feeling virtuous for bunging them a fiver.

Indoctro · 16/11/2020 07:13

I used to deliver pizza and the money they give you does not cover your expenses on your car , you kinda rely on tips really .

So yeah I always tip as I know the wages are so low.
