I always tip, and try to have change at the door when I'm expecting take away.

Sometimes however the exchange of food is so quick I forget

jay55 · 15/11/2020 23:10

Pre COVID i always tipped £2 cash for takeaway delivery. Now I don't feel I can tip cash (or even have any) so only tip if the app allows.

jessyjo2 · 15/11/2020 23:12

I don't tip. Same for Christmas presents if the postman, binman, other service people do what they are getting paid to do I don't see why. If they go out of their way and do something outside of their job role, then yes need a tip or Christmas present to show appreciation.
My theory is I do a randon background job, that no customer would dream of sending tip/present to. So why should frontline people get all the tips/presents. I work every bit as hard.
In your case, what about the dominoes office staff, IT staff, cleaners, auditors etc surely they work every bit as hard as delivery person, but what customer will ever tip them......... nobody.

CovidAnni · 15/11/2020 23:14

Always tip, Amazon and food delivery. Postmen have good working conditions and are unionised. Other delivery workers, less so Sad

emilyfrost · 15/11/2020 23:15

YANBU. Tipping should not be encouraged; it is not the job of the customer to subsidise an employee’s wage. Especially when we have a minimum wage as it is.

Notnownotneverever · 15/11/2020 23:16

Tip if you can. It’s a shit job and often in bad weather and certainly a bonus for the driver if you are able to.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 15/11/2020 23:18

I don't tip. I don't always have the choice either because the delivery people just hand over the goods and pretty much run off. I swear I'm not holding a gun... Grin

Overthegardenfence · 15/11/2020 23:19

Always tip takeaway deliveries I’ve got a bowl in the hall with loose change in it, I remember what it’s like to have no money.

Elizabella · 15/11/2020 23:26

I always tip takeaway drivers as they don't earn much.I consider them. as waiters on wheels.

KrisAkabusi · 15/11/2020 23:26

To all the people saying they are getting or should be getting minimum wage, most delivery drivers are not getting wages. It's piecework, same as taxi drivers. They'll get paid per delivery. And it's shit money if it turns out you live in the top floor of an apartment building, up a steep hill, in the pissing rain.

MadCattery · 15/11/2020 23:29

I live in the US and we tip for everything. Since Covid, I am even more generous, because I know some people were out of work for a long time. I tip my hairdresser, I tip the waitstaff. I rarely have food delivered but would expect to tip for that. I do tip my garbagemen (bins?) every holiday and since I get a newspaper delivered on Sundays, add a tip for that at the holidays. We pretty much consider it as part of the cost of things here, and the recipient knows he/she is going to be paid what they earn. A good restaurant server where I live may earn $35,000 plus, which would be £26,500 there. Good service is rewarded, tips are expected and we don't even think much of it.

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 15/11/2020 23:30

No I don’t tip.

I pay for my pizza online, I don’t tip the staff preparing my pizza, I’m not sure why I should tip the delivery driver?

I don’t tip my window cleaner, Amazon delivery driver, postman, refuse collector, any other food deliveries we’ve used more over the past year?

HairyPotter · 15/11/2020 23:31

Always tip my Domino’s (or any other takeaway) driver. More if it’s chucking it down.

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 15/11/2020 23:32

Jees, if I tipped every Amazon delivery driver they’d be rich!

MadameBlobby · 15/11/2020 23:34

I tip but I don’t think you are BU for not.

emilyfrost · 15/11/2020 23:34

Good service is rewarded,

MadCattery Good service should be the basic expected standard.

Chewwithyourfuckingmouthclosed · 15/11/2020 23:36

I rarely tip anyone any more.
I realised that I was handing over my cash to people that in all likelihood earned more than me for doing nothing over and above their job.

Whattheactual20201 · 15/11/2020 23:37

I don’t tip apart from on V rate occasions that service has been beyond normal.

Darker · 15/11/2020 23:37

Delivery people get paid by the job, not the hour. So if they are hanging around waiting for a job there is no money. And they often provide their own bike.

It is really badly paid, and pretty thankless.

Please tip.

MadameBlobby · 15/11/2020 23:37

@CarrotCakeCrumbs

At the moment no because all deliveries are supposed to be contact free, but in normal times I absolutely tip. Knowing the shit that the staff have to put up with for minimum wage, the drivers definitely deserve any tips they get (so do the instore staff but that's another matter entirely).
I’ve got a wee wall in my porch so can put the money on that, if I didn’t it would be difficult
Paddingtonjuice · 15/11/2020 23:38

I do not tip delivery drivers. It is an Americanism we can do without. Companies should pay their staff properly. If I were wealthy, I would tip but we should not be encouraging this. Corporate companies expecting working class people to top up their staff wages - no!

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 15/11/2020 23:43

No I don't tip any delivery drivers. I pay online so there's no cash involved.

MrsSpringfield · 15/11/2020 23:44

Very rarely for a take away.
But always in a restaurant. If service has been good.

Service isn't really good or bad with a delivery? It arrives. Hopefully in good time. That's pretty much it.. so I'm not sure what I'd be tipping. The times I have have been because there's a few coins in the side so I've given them (without much thought)

MiniMum97 · 15/11/2020 23:45

@SpilltheTea

I don't understand why this industry gets tips, but other low paid jobs don't. Not being rude, but I'm not tipping someone for handing me my food.
This. Plenty of people are low paid and "serve" the public and don't get a tip. I tip if I've had particularly good service somewhere. I won't tip someone because he's handed me some food at the door. I definitely don't tip taxis. I thought that was a very weird idea. So I pay them to drive me from A to B (at an often extortionate price), why would I give them money on top for nothing in addition.
JohnCarter · 15/11/2020 23:51

I work for a very busy kebab house, I get paid NMW but once you take out for fuel and wear and tear it works out a lot less. I have to replace my breaks and tyres yearly then there is the cost of business insurance.
I regularly take 3 or 4 orders at a time and you tend to learn the regulars who tip so they always get their food first 😀
