I feel really embarrassed tipping - like I'm the Queen rewarding one of my serfsGrin

I never tip the driver from Ubereats who delivers our kids' McDonalds because their delivery charge is already extortionate. Before Covid, I would never have dreamt of having a McDonalds delivered, but I get really flustered talking into those speaker thingummies at the drive through and don't want to queue in the shop. It's a once a month treat!

I do tip the guy who delivers our Chinese food because their delivery charge is reasonable to start with.

I realise that there is no logic to my 'system', because it's the driver who gets the tip regardless of delivery cost, but £3.99 to deliver a couple of sad, floppy burgers 2 miles is enough without adding on a tip.

Nottherealslimshady · 16/11/2020 07:31

I dont tip at the moment because the whole point is that its cashless delivery. But I used to always tip

emilyfrost · 16/11/2020 08:55

@Nancydrawn

Yes, you tip. Even before I moved to the States I tipped service people, and now it's an ingrained habit. I've never in my life had a taxi driver or a delivery person refuse to take a tip, at home or over here. I'm with the PP: if you can afford a takeaway, you can afford a couple quid for the person who went out in the night to bring it to your house. And if it's wet/snowy/your house is in the middle of nowhere, you should tip more.
It’s not a matter of affordability. They took the job knowing the conditions; they’re aware some nights it might be snowy/rainy/cold.

“Going out into the night to bring it to your house” is “getting in a car with a box and handing it out”. It’s not a hardship.

There are a plethora of minimum wage jobs; you don’t take one and then moan about the conditions and low pay whilst expecting the customer to improve it for you with a tip.

We should not be encouraging tipping because the onus is not on the customer to top up wages or improve conditions.

i’ve never tipped delivery drivers, and i’ve never had drivers hanging round expecting to be tipped. i especially hate ordering from uber eats where you get charged about £5 for delivery and then they add on a service charge as well. and then they send you notifications asking you to tip the driver! i try to order directly from the takeaway place now and only order from uber eats or just eat if there’s no other option.

Emily you really have no idea.

  • In many areas there are no jobs, especially since the pandemic. People don't go out delivering food for the lolz. Many are desperate.
  • lots are paid by the job, not a steady income. It can take hours to earn even a few quid.
  • many are on pushbikes, not nice warm cars. Bikes, warm clothes and repairs are not provided.
Scarlettpixie · 16/11/2020 09:35

I don’t usually tip takeaway delivery drivers. I might if it is a big order or if they have to go out of their way like to a hotel or campsite. Most charge delivery and dominos is expensive enough so is always a stretch on the budget, we are not in the US (where I would always tip but drivers here are I assume at least on min wage).

Scarlettpixie · 16/11/2020 09:37

Oh and since March most have put the food on the doorstep and legged it, no hanging about.

Nikhedonia · 16/11/2020 09:38

And if you can’t afford a few quid on top of an overpriced cheese and tomato on toast then make it yourself.

And if I can afford it but don't tip, I should just not order a takeaway, so they have even less work that night? Hmm

What a ridiculous thing to say.

It's still not the customer's responsibility to top up their wages. The problem is the zero hours/piece work culture. It needs to end.

National minimum wage is so high now that tipping isn't necessary

Have you not read the thread? Most food delivery drivers are not getting paid minimum wage. They are not getting a wage AT ALL. They are paid per delivery.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/11/2020 09:44

I don't tip as I pay by card when I order and I don't have any cash. I used to add a tip to the card payment when I ordered an Indian as I knew the people but don't any more as it's under new management.

KyraGoose · 16/11/2020 09:46

Never tip for take away delivery.

PizzaForOne · 16/11/2020 09:48

Don't see the point. They are on min wage like many jobs, such as retail, who serve customers but don't get tips.

I only tip in restaurants if service is exceptional. I never pay 'optional service charge' that has automatically been added to bill.

LizaE · 16/11/2020 09:51

If a delivery driver has two orders in opposite directions and one tips and the other doesn't, guess whose is getting their food first, piping hot and fresh?

For the sake of a quid, is it really worth being tight over?

If my food is cold, guess who won't be getting my order next time? Works both ways.

That’s all irrelevant.

Haha, guess who I will be calling to get a refund when my food shows up cold?
Nikhedonia · 16/11/2020 10:00

Why exactly are takeaway business owners not being guilted into paying their staff a fair wage? Why are customers being expected to pick up the tab through tips?

Darker · 16/11/2020 10:00

Don't see the point. They are on min wage like many jobs

Read the thread and educate yourself.

MrsBeltane · 16/11/2020 10:03

My DS recently left his job at Domino's. He never expected a tip, but he was earning £6.80 an hour, so tips really helped.

LizaE · 16/11/2020 10:03

But it isn't going to any time soon, infact, things will probably get worse for peopleas jobs get scarcer and employers can take the piss more. So tip the people earning fuck all per shift.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 16/11/2020 10:03

I never tip , I actually hate tipping . I work in retail and would be embarrassed if someone tried to tip me ( they never would of course ) . I do my job well because well its my job . I would and have never tipped a delivery driver although we rarely have deliveries any way .

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 16/11/2020 10:12

Do we tip in the UK now??
I thought people got paid to do these jobs, do you tip your Dr and dentist too?

Opinionator · 16/11/2020 10:13

Nope, I never tip either unless the service is outstanding.

Never understood why people tip for food, yet I've worked in call centres on minimum, taken heaps of abuse constantly and nobody tipped me. I'm not bitter about it, I just don't understand why some professions are more likely to get tips than others when we're all working hard.

Opinionator · 16/11/2020 10:14

*minimum wage

Sorry lol
