Never tipped dominos, they’re paid a wage I think 🤔 in fairness never tipped any delivery driver/workman. The delivery fee is surely theirs?

Cattenberg · 15/11/2020 23:54

I HATE the whole practice of tipping. It makes me shudder. I feel like I’m treating an adult like a child by handing them £2 pocket money.

I tip waiting staff, pizza delivery drivers and hair stylists. I rarely tip taxi drivers any more (I just round up to the next pound), as they seem to earn more per hour than I do.

My friend moonlighted as a pizza delivery driver. Many people tipped him, but he hated delivering to expensive houses as he says no one living in those EVER tipped him.

I agree with your friend, the big expensive houses rarely tip my best tips are always on the council estates.
LaBodDelMed · 16/11/2020 00:10

I tip my takeaway delivery people and my online shopping delivery people.
I like to think it’s good karma - not that it’s working!

SixFeetUnder · 16/11/2020 00:10

We always tip takeaway drivers, we've started leaving the money on the windowsill for them, most of them seem surprised and happy to be tipped anything just now.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 16/11/2020 00:15

When I order on Deliveroo there is an option to tip so I do and for food deliveries

And I’m sure I get the food sooner

DC3Dakota · 16/11/2020 00:18

All this "They rely on their tips" has become a bit of a bandwagon of sorts. A myth. In the UK at least. It may be the case in the US that waiting staff get paid only a few dollars per hour, but in the UK, all employers MUST pay national minimum wage by LAW.
Yes I'm sure some employers break that law, but as customers, we have no way of knowing if that is the case.

The way I see it to give an example - why should a hard working family with a parent/parents, earning only national minimum wage themselves and who are treating themselves and/or their kids to a meal out or a takeaway, be expected to tip their hard earned money to a staff member who is earning the same as them? It's not always possible to determine income bracket by appearances, especially these days and why should that have to even come into it? I'd far rather go out for a meal or order a takeaway without the 'expectation' that I need to find £2 cash or I'll be thought of as tight!! Hmm
I have a severe, life limiting illness and I am a single parent to a young child. Therefore I only receive disability & child benefits so I cannot spare it.
Yet all the takeaway driver will see is the brand new home (social housing) and the brand new Audi SUV in the drive (Motability car - I need a tall car in order to get in & I paid an extra £3k I got from a compo claim to upgrade to an Audi as a one off treat for the 3yr lease because why the hell not? Only way I'll ever have a nice car or anything luxury for that matter!)
So if I order a takeaway and don't tip well, then I'm no doubt declared tight! Confused

As far as I'm concerned, a tip is for when a worker has provided excellent service. Exceeded expectations etc. That's how & why tipping began. Now it's become 'expected' and some employers are illegally docking wages by the value of the tips given (either all cash tips have to be handed over at the end of the night or all card machine gratuities go to the management).
Which is utterly disgraceful and means we as customers are financially supporting the entire business, rather than tipping the employee for exceptional service!

Dontwanttobeyourmonkeywench · 16/11/2020 00:19

DS supplements his student income with Dominoes delivery. His place have made them all self-employed and they only get £5/hr plus whatever the deliver fee is per order. On a busy night he can get make £10/hr (including the basic 5er) but he has to pay business insurance for his car plus any tax, wear and tear etc. If it's quiet then they get sent home, so he can have a good shift from 5pm to 3am (prelockdown) and earn £70+ (which he used to consider a fortune) or get sent home after 4 hrs with possibly £30.

LizaE · 16/11/2020 00:26

I always tip. Delivery drivers, cabs, hairdresser, in restaurants, anywhere where someone does something for us, ie team of builders - but only the workers, not the owner. Its rude not to give people a drink.

Dontwanttobeyourmonkeywench · 16/11/2020 00:26

The only reason why his hourly rate works out so low is because they bring in a pile of drivers for the rush, cover quite a distance since the only other franchise in the area is a minimum of 6 miles away and our town has a horrendous one way system that delays people getting back for multiple runs. During lockdown they had a huge influx of people applying for driver jobs and anytime any of the longer standing staff complained or annoyed the shift manager they would be fired or not be given hours, cos zero hr contact 🤔 he enjoys the banter and his mates are there, plus he has no pressing need for a well paying job atm, so I'm biting my tongue, but I constantly want to smack the manager for the chappy way they treat staff

Dontwanttobeyourmonkeywench · 16/11/2020 00:27

Re: Taxi Drivers - My Dad used to be a taxi driver and whilst the amounts they charge are high you have NO IDEA how much they have to pay out! He owned his vehicle and paid the company he worked for £150 a week for the jobs they sent him and rent on the equipment they loan him for his car. Then he paid £11,000 per year liability insurance. Then £250 per month for his local taxi licence. Then £400 per month car insurance in addition the liability insurance. Then every 3 months the car had to have a physical taxi check (something to do with making sure the meter operates correctly in alignment with the wheels??) then he had to pay to rent that meter which was £100+ a month at least. Then every day his car had to be washed & waxed to meet company standards. Professionally Valeted once a week (£20+). Then £40-£60 per DAY/shift in fuel! This was all 10 years ago by the way. It will no doubt have increased dramatically since then.

He said that he had to work at least 3 (12hr) shifts before he broke even (if they were quiet shifts then it could well be 4) and the company only allowed him to work a maximum of 6 shifts per week as they were 12 hours long.

I remember him coming home really sad on odd occasions having only done one job all day. (Despite us living in an affluent exhibition town, close to two military training centres!)

Their income is very, very unreliable. Plus they get a HELL of a lot of prank call outs which costs them money of course.

Honestly, they really don't get a lot. They are the only workers who I always make sure I have the cash to tip. I also always stop to let them out at junctions! Smile

DC3Dakota · 16/11/2020 00:40

@MiniMum97 Please would you mind reading my post above about taxi drivers? Should hopefully explain why the charge is so high

Audreyseyebrows · 16/11/2020 00:48

We don’t get take away deliveries but if we did I would tip! I can’t imagine not tipping!

Ontheboardwalk · 16/11/2020 00:50

@EmmaWithTheGreatHair

Jees, if I tipped every Amazon delivery driver they’d be rich!
If I tipped my Amazon driver every time I’d be skint 😂
Ontheboardwalk · 16/11/2020 00:53

I do tip Domino drivers though. I wipe down £2 and leave it on the windowsill

earthyfire · 16/11/2020 00:55

Very rarely tip cash to takeaway delivery drivers unless it is raining for some reason. If there's an option to tip online I do.

Bobtheshark · 16/11/2020 01:10

I always pay in cash and always tip. It wouldn’t occur to me not to too delivery drivers, hair dressers, restaurant staff etc.

Newmumatlast · 16/11/2020 01:12

I always order via justeat and delivery is charged as extra so I don't tip as delivery has been paid for. It has never occurred to me to tip to be honest as I don't tip for every single service I use where people are already receiving a wage and that should be NMW. I would tip if there was something extra about the service. I only tip in restaurants because that is the cultural norm but actually don't understand why we do when people are paid and just doing their job. I appreciate the wages are low but people working in other industries on low wages don't get tipped. I never did either when in that position. I think it actually could mean employers get away with not paying people decently as they expect people to rely on tips. Take away tipping, and they should pay their staff properly.

JoachimH · 16/11/2020 02:45

I actually deliver for dominos. Pay is 8.73 p/a (minimum wage) plus 80p per deliver which probably covers fuel and vehicle wear on a less expensive vehicle.

Getting a tip makes my day, but honestly it's shockingly rare. I probably make between 0 and 5 pounds per week on tips, usually 0.

I don't expect tips from anyone but coming from someone who always tips the barber (never order food), it's crazy how rare it is. Coupled with it being hard to secure more than 25 hours a week as there is only very much work between 5pm and 8pm means it's a truly terribly paid job.

StoneofDestiny · 16/11/2020 02:49

madcattery
I think the whole tipping issue is different in the US. Without tips, servers wouldn’t have much of a wage at all. It’s different here. Employers are meant to pay the wages, not the customers.

AllByMySelfDontWannaBe · 16/11/2020 03:16

I just don't get why people happily tip their overpriced hairdresser but then suddenly get all sniffy about tipping the person who has delivered their curry in the pouring rain for minimum wage.

Is it because one makes them feel more glamorous or something?

MustardMitt · 16/11/2020 03:43

Since the advent of Just Eat I haven’t tipped since. I never have cash on me, and tbh the local places drop and run before I could even try and foist a couple of quid on them.

Pre-Just Eat I always tipped.

Orkneys · 16/11/2020 04:17

@lalafafa

I always tip, its a low paid job, I give £2-3 in a sandwich bag.
Other jobs are also low paid do you tip everyone?
Anordinarymum · 16/11/2020 04:20

I tip delivery drivers. I don't think they are paid much. I think if you tip the guy he will remember you next time. I would never tip a Dominos driver because I think Dominos are overpriced and i don't like pizza :)
