I only tip my hairdresser, in restaurants and in black cabs. It wouldn’t occur to me to tip a delivery driver. I do however always book direct with the restaurant when I heard that Just Eat and the like take 30% of your order.

Popcornismandatory · 15/11/2020 22:29

We always tip takeaway delivery drivers a couple of quid even if already paid up front online

user1471447863 · 15/11/2020 22:30

@MondeoFan

I normally tip. Car owners are using wear and tear on their own vehicle.
So? They are using it as a business tool, wear and tear/maintenance is simply a cost of doing business, just like wear to their shoes would be if they decided to walk instead
PurpleFlower1983 · 15/11/2020 22:31

I usually tip but I haven’t since Covid - is it ok to start again?

Mrsmorton · 15/11/2020 22:33

@Duemarch2021 I can't remember the detail. He was delivering on a moped and got a ticket for some form of traffic violation, he couldn't pay it and didn't want to tell his parents, his pay structure was heavily caveated, something to do with distance and numbers of deliveries and he got so stressed about it all that he hung himself.

buddhasbelly · 15/11/2020 22:38

@Duemarch2021 @Mrsmorton I watched that on BBC 3 Killed By My Debt is it? I think it was centered around pay day loans but yes he was on a v low wage and needed a vehicle to continue working so he was set in a horrible cycle.

If its not that doc though, please ignore!

user1843685313563 · 15/11/2020 22:44

No. I'm not enabling businesses to underpay people in order to boost their own profits.

Workers should be paid a fair rate and the cost charged should reflect this.

Duemarch2021 · 15/11/2020 22:44

@Mrsmorton

Oh I remember watching that last year!.. fair enough

It's mean and miserly not to tip a couple of pounds.

user1843685313563 · 15/11/2020 22:45

The fact that a single unpaid parking ticket can be escalated into thousands of pounds of debt is an entirely separate, abhorrent issue.

TweeBree · 15/11/2020 22:47

I used to always tip in cash but I haven't since Covid hit. I will restart when it's safer.

user1843685313563 · 15/11/2020 22:48

Do people tip Royal Mail delivery people? Amazon drivers?

faginssidekick · 15/11/2020 22:50

I never do, they deliver in their cars and not by bike. If they'd had a hard slog up a hill by bike in the pouring rain then I'd maybe tip them but tbh I'd be more likely not to order in the first place then drag them out in that weather.

rooarsome · 15/11/2020 22:53

I never have cash, so I don't tip.

vanillandhoney · 15/11/2020 22:54

No. I don't tip in general, though.

I think it's a very bizarre practise!

PinkPlantCase · 15/11/2020 22:54

No never have tipped delivery drivers, I’ve also never been around anyone who has!

They should be paid fairly to start with.

Nikhedonia · 15/11/2020 22:59

Not a chance I'm tipping someone who delivers my pizza, why would I?

I don't tip the Ocado man who brings my food shop. Nor do I tip the DPD lady who delivers my parcels.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 15/11/2020 22:59

If I have a spare coins in my purse I always tip, even a £1 is better than nothing.
Unless you are strapped for cash or don't have any coins on you I just think it's rude or just not thinking about the person to tip.
The reason why I think this is because I see it as a personal service almost like they're being my run around/fetch & carry/servant because I can't be arsed or unable to.
This probably sounds very condescending but it's just what I think.

At the moment I'm just leaving the tip on the doorstep under a glass or in a little freezer bag. Though last delivery I threw & she caught it!

GeorgiaGirl52 · 15/11/2020 23:01

@SpilltheTea

I don't understand why this industry gets tips, but other low paid jobs don't. Not being rude, but I'm not tipping someone for handing me my food.
Not for handing you your food. For collecting it at the store, going out in all weather (cold, wet, stormy), using their own vehicles and paying for their own gas to bring it to you. Running the risk of being mugged for the money you gave them. And giving all the money for the pizza back to the manager, who pays them less than minimum wage because he factors in the tip (THAT THEY DIDN'T GET) into their wages. Yes there are other low paid jobs. But there are ways to improve those wages - overtime, cost-of-living, promotion. Delivery is a dead-end job.
Wotsitsarecheesy · 15/11/2020 23:03

I've only ever tipped in resturants, where's it's been expected for decades. Never tipped anyone else and it wasn't until relatively recently that I realised this was a thing. Though i've never used a deliveroo type service as we live rurally and i don't think they come to us.

I hate the tipping culture though and just want everyone to be paid a fair wage, and customers charged fair prices, so tipping is unnecessary. I understand that in other countries certain staff are expected to make up their wages with tips, but we have the minimum wage here so it's not the same and shouldn't be necessary. If min wage isn't enough, it should be raised. And there are many other minimum wage workers that might earn less than the delivery drivers, often for more challenging jobs, so i really don't understand why we should tip some workers and not others. I've often been in the position where finances are so tight that I can only just afford to go out/get a takeaway, and if I have to tip, then I can't afford to go at all. i just wish we didn't have to import US culture over here, where things just aren't the same.

Nikhedonia · 15/11/2020 23:04

Ah I get it, I should give a tip because their employer is breaking the law by not paying them at least the NMW. Got it. Hmm

Rover83 · 15/11/2020 23:04

In the good old days if paying with cash I would tip. Now I don't and I think if they wanted you to tip they could add it as an option when paying like they do at a restaurant or the hairdressers. A few places I order from offer to round your order up and give the difference to charity so I don't think it would be hard for them to do.

StoneofDestiny · 15/11/2020 23:05

Never heard of tipping delivery drivers - isn't that like tipping the postie?

I am tipping less than I used to, I think it's getting out of hand. I used to always tip hairdressers - but not any longer.

Lou98 · 15/11/2020 23:06

I usually always tip unless I don't have cash on me, usually £2 for a food delivery. I just think if I'm spending that much on my dinner anyway an extra £2 isn't much to me. I used to work in local pubs though and always thought it was lovely when people gave a tip so i think that's why I do it - however I never expected it and I would think it was a bit rude that the driver hung around expecting one.

Then again I also tip hairdressers, nail and lash girl, tattooists etc. I just think it's nice to be nice 🤷‍♀️ and these things to me are a luxury and so I'm happy to spend an extra couple of pounds.
