@Blueberries0112 Dominos give their drivers mileage for petrol.

Blueberries0112 · 17/11/2020 11:10

That's what she told me. She had to pay her own gas

Saoirse7 · 17/11/2020 11:10

"Tipping is not mandatory* in the United States, so there are no laws that govern how much gratuity should be paid."

Yes, they are not going to call the police on you or anything for not tipping. All it does is make you look bad . There are plenty of people who did not tip because they thought the service was horrible

I have stated that I tip, just sometimes not the 20% as I don't believe the price of my food is relative to my service. Good service imo is an expectation, I do tip more when the service is very good as it is warranted.
Nikhedonia · 17/11/2020 11:12

I do not see waitresses marching in streets demanding livable wages. Apparently tipping is working out for them.

Good point. We don't have dominoes delivery persons marching in our streets either and there isn't much of a tipping culture here, seems that the lack of tips is 'working out for them' too.

So there's absolutely no need to tip. I shall wait for the placards before I offer my change.

rainonarainyday · 17/11/2020 11:14

Of course you tip it makes them happy ! Even if you paid card give a couple of quid, it all adds up.

KatherineJaneway · 17/11/2020 11:17

FYI

Tipping is not mandatory in the United States, so there are no laws that govern how much gratuity should be paid.

I never said there was a law, I said it was an accepted and expected part of eating out there. If you don't want to tip or can't afford to, an individual shouldn't be eating out there.

Runningdownthathill · 17/11/2020 11:19

I never tip unless it’s a taxi.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/11/2020 12:59

If the expected minimum tip for a waitress in the US is 20% and people here are calling others cheapskates for the sake of 'a couple of dollars', are there really loads of restaurants in the US where a family can eat and drink for a total of $10?!

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 17/11/2020 13:01

I'd Google 'arrested for not tipping in US' before making such bold assertions about it not being a crime . . .

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/11/2020 13:02

I've no doubt that being given money makes most people happy. Unfortunately, not all of us can afford to go around being pocket philanthropists.

And that's if they even see any of the money you add on to a card payment for a tip....

ohbabyxox · 17/11/2020 13:10

I don't tip purely because everywhere I order from (on just eat) has a service fee and delivery charge added onto every order which usually adds up to around £2+ so surely that's the equivalent to paying a tip on top of the food price.

cushioncovers · 17/11/2020 13:10

I've always just tipped food delivery people £1 but there's only two of us in the house so orders are never huge. I figure if every delivery they went to they got a pound over the course of a week that adds up. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/11/2020 13:24

There seems to be a creep in what (some) people define the rules are for tipping

There always will be while folk are prepared to pay; it expands to whatever the market will bear, with a "me too" attitude and sometimes a sob story to help things along

Ironically, it's not the principle of tipping but the expectation and the cries of "you're tight if you don't" which annoys me. Like so many in the UK I do it happily for extra service, etc, but whatever happened to making our own choices and leaving others to theirs?

Putthegasfireon · 17/11/2020 13:49

I hate the tipping culture. I never tip my hairdresser. She charges £50 for a cut and blow dry, which I'm happy to pay, but it takes her 30 mins at the most. She earns far more than I do. There's no way I'm giving her money on top of that, nor does she expect it. Tipping at the hairdressers was typically for the apprentice, who would wash your hair (not cut it) and would be on a low wage. My hairdresser does it all herself.

Went to Cornwall once and had a meal in one of Rick Stein's pubs. As I was paying and ordering (before we'd had any kind of notable service or food) the barman handed me the card reader with a tip screen to input the how much extra I wanted to give. Fuck. That. Rick Stein owns half of Padstow, he should be paying his staff a decent wage, not getting them to ask for tips before they've actually served you and you know what the quality of the food is like.

I had a few drinks at the shard once. A round was pretty expensive for not very many drinks at all and the "service" charge (for us going to the bar and collecting drinks) was over £8.
squeekums · 17/11/2020 22:43

@Coffeeand

Shocked at how many people are so tight. Surely a few pounds tip to someone in a low wage job who is providing you a service is the least you can do in normal times, let alone now. Fucking hell.
So it would be ok for me working in a service station as a check out chick to ask for a tip, we low paid and serve after all If not, what makes delivery people and waitresses so special
Nikhedonia · 17/11/2020 22:46

Ah but then you can't try and pretend you are somehow superior because you give £1 to the dominoes delivery person, you know, to keep them out of gangs Hmm

Duemarch2021 · 17/11/2020 23:35

@Coffeeand

You say "you should always tip but even more so now!"

Why even more so now? .. covid has boosted the delivery service so they are getting more work than ever! Whereas i was furloughed for 4 months so lost some wages...

And if you mean because its a dangerous job to do during covid... well it's not really is it....they leave it by the door..its no more dangerous than many other jobs out there, especially no more dangerous than NHS staff.. do they get tipped? Nope

Duemarch2021 · 17/11/2020 23:53

@LizaE

Why don't they get paid NMW? If you look on jobsites you can see domino's delivery driver jobs being advertised as NMW? ... i also never see mopeds delivering domino's, always cars... also if someone only has a moped and no car, then why have they applied for a delivery job if they are unhappy to deliver food on a moped? They could apply for a shop job or McDonald's etc..

Can tell the kind of customer @emilyfrost is 😅

BugCatcher879 · 18/11/2020 00:44

No. If I was paying cash I wouldn't expect change/poss round it up. But I dont answer the door just ask them to leave on doorstep and wave.

I think I last used cash in march

chubbycheeks26 · 18/11/2020 00:52

As I pay by card when ordering I don't tip unless and option is there and the moment they drop and go anyway.

I do however, tip waiting staff or buy bar staff a drink. The amount of shit they goat from asshat customers and drunken idiots is horrendous, absolutely not worth the money and it's how I come to leave hospitality. It's a thankless job, serving nit wits on your feet all day. You actually run around, working your butt off for entitled, demanding guests who think they come above all customers, you're not doing that retail, hairdressing, taxi's or delivery drivers. As a waiter you are literally WAITING HAND AND FOOT on usually quite rude people, running to get sauce, glass of wine everything you want one, running to give chefs your complaints just to get shouted at, serving and taking orders from a table of 20 in the run to up Christmas when you're already rushed off your feet. You are a servant, other jobs like retail just aren't the same. Hospitality is SHIT and you wouldn't know unless you've worked in it. Can say all you like people cHoOsE tO dO iT but what would you do if there was no one to serve you your Sauvignon Blanc and Beef and Ale Pie or posh Sunday Roast.

chubbycheeks26 · 18/11/2020 00:58

@squeekums you sit behind a till charging for someone for their sweeties and petrol then stack some shelves, possibly take in a delivery and tell customer where they can wotsits. You don't run around after people all day, specifically the same ones for a couple of hours at a time.

BadlyDrawnSimpsonsCharacter · 18/11/2020 01:30

@BettyOBarley

I never tip Blush I didn't even know it was a thing!
Same!

I do tip in restaurants (unless the service was really terrible) but I don't actually follow the logic as to how waiting staff are so hard done by because they're at your beck and call and have to bring you your food and a second glass of wine if you ask for one; that is the entire purpose of the job. It's not as if customers can just nip behind the bar and get their own drink or to the kitchen for their own food, but they're too lazy and entitled to do it.

I also don't believe that the majority of customers are horrible, unless you are classing horrible as having the audacity to ask the staff to bring them something. Yes, of course you do get horrible customers but most customers are fine. The picking faults in everything and clicking their fingers to get your attention types are a minority.
