AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

Probably to try and cheer themselves up a bit

SilverOtter · 15/11/2020 19:03

Because this year has sucked, life is shit and I just wanted some cheery, twinkly lights to look at. Ok?

Boscoforever · 15/11/2020 19:03

I love driving to/from work and seeing them up.
Wouldn't do it myself but this year it is really cheering to see lights twinking.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 15/11/2020 19:03

We have put a small trail of lights up outside - only because a neighbour asked if we would as they wanted to brighten things up a bit...I made a token effort because I want to be supportive and they’ve had a rubbish time...

My tree and Deccys came out last Sunday night and I've slowly been working through them this week. My rotating tree is up and looking beautiful with all its glass novelty decorations. My lemax village got set up today and space has been made in the book cases for the other boys and bobs.

It's early for us, normally the last week of November/first of December but This year just feels so miserable and grey. Plus the week before lockdown#2 I bought 40m2 of tiles for the hall way and bedroom and needed to get the Deccys out from under the stairs so I can get the tiles laid on the floor.

My living room has just been redecorated and my tree looks gorgeous, so bright and cheery. We spent yesterday with my sister and nephews and made lots of home made Christmas Deccys and last week it was ginger bread men that we made and decorated. Next week I'll have to come up with a new craft for us to do..... maybe Christmas card making. Hot chocolate and movies too. Basically anything to Keep our spirits up !

Xmasbaby11 · 15/11/2020 19:05

It does seem to be a thing this year, and it's understandable as it's a small easy way to cheer yourself up. I will be waiting til 1st December (or the first weekend after) which is what we normally do.

Parker231 · 15/11/2020 19:05

We don’t put ours up until the weekend before Christmas but others can put them up whenever they want. There are no rules as to when they go up or down.

Purpleheadgirl · 15/11/2020 19:05

Actually it could be down to a "thing". A Nottinghamshire mental health Trust suggest something called Light up Local I think as a way of boosting people's mental health by putting up Christmas lights earlier than normal. Has been on the news and therefore spreading :)

musicposy · 15/11/2020 19:06

Ours are going up when DH gets a minute next week and we never put them up until December. I just want to look at something pretty and feel a bit less shit.

CrazyToast · 15/11/2020 19:07

To cheer themselves up, definitely.

dewisant2020 · 15/11/2020 19:07

After the worst year of my life I decided to put our decorations up today to try and cheer ourselves up

CakeRequired · 15/11/2020 19:10

@Feministicon

Oh I won't give up on caring for myself, don't worry. I've just given up on this year having anything good in it and with that, I've given up on my diet. Grin So give me all the bloody cake the shops have!

I'm still exercising though so that kind of counts... Grin probably not gonna be able to exercise off the cake though.

TheWernethWife · 15/11/2020 19:10

1st December for us - fed up of the dark nights and dreary weather.

A bit of sparkle to cheer us up.

Fouroclockonamarblemorning · 15/11/2020 19:12

It’s way too early, but I don’t have little kids so we only put ours up the week before Christmas and usually take it down on 27th Dec.
I can totally see why anyone with little ones would put it up early.

RightOnTheEdge · 15/11/2020 19:12

I've seen a lot of people on SM putting their decorations up now to cheer themselves up. I'm looking forward to putting ours up but I'll wait until December or I'll be sick of them by Christmas.

A couple of my neighbours have put loads of outside lights up this week which really made me smile when I saw them.
I wish outside lights stayed up until spring. They really cheer up walking about on cold, dark nights.
I love them.

LagunaBubbles · 15/11/2020 19:14

It’s ridiculous. How bored can people be? Surely they have other things to keep them amused

Yeh I'm a Nurse in the NHS, plenty to do "to keep myself amused" actually, didn't stop me putting my tree up because I wanted to. Whats ridiculous really is the amount of people that are so judgemental about how other people decorate their own house.

Ballsdeep00 · 15/11/2020 19:15

@Purpleheadgirl I think you might be right I heard about that

AlanThePig · 15/11/2020 19:16
@TinyGhost yes! I went to TKMaxx 2 weeks before Halloween abs nothing! It was all Xmas stuff.
Thats typical of any year.
I spend far too much time in the Maxx. Halloween comes in around mid to late `august and is virtually gone by mid october to make way for Christmas. It's just the way they manage stock.

Unescorted · 15/11/2020 19:17

Ours went up today. Normally we would be away over Christmas avoiding wider family squabbles, but as we aren't why not embrace it.... It is the first one we have done as a just us family with no travelling. No driving across the country 3 times in fewer days. No sitting down for one dinner and getting a call to ask why we haven't arrived at the next. No arguments about which set of parents gets to see the grand kids first. No having to eat half cooked turkey. #Covidsilverlining.

RelaisBlu · 15/11/2020 19:18

DD1 & her boyfriend & DD2 are living in our flat in London where they have already put up the Christmas tree several weeks ago! Boyfriend was mending his bike on the balcony and received admiring comments about the tree from people walking below saying how lovely it was. I think such things are bringing a bit of cheer this year so why not?

sapnupuas · 15/11/2020 19:18

Because they want to...?

BillyGoatsChuff · 15/11/2020 19:20

Because they want too?

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 15/11/2020 19:20

We’ve put most of ours up because, why not?

Not on Facebook & a professional with plenty to keep myself occupied with, thank you.

It’s a little joy in a dark world. What’s wrong with that?

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 15/11/2020 19:21

We put ours up last week, it's brought joy to the end of a very shitty year and I'm not at all bothered about how early they've gone up. I love getting the tree out, putting on Christmas songs and having a dance and sing. I always feel sad when I take them down!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/11/2020 19:21

Our outside lights went up in the week and the tree is going up next weekend. It's such a crappy dull time that I want sparkly lights!
