AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

LagunaBubbles
I'm with you sister! I'm rehabbing covid patients and am pretty busy at the moment.
I am definitely not bored.
Our decorations aren't up as I'm waiting until the 3 DC come home from uni.
But! I have wrapped up all the presents, baked 3 xmas cakes, made a pudding, made sloe gin and limoncello. I read Christmas magazines in the evenings whilst eating the tub of roses Grin
Whatever keeps your spirits up, I say.

tupperwaretowers · 15/11/2020 19:24

I’m going for a gentle roll out. Started with front window lights which really cheer up the place and will add to it daily till the tree goes up as normal in December.

stschiap · 15/11/2020 19:24

Mine are going up this week and normally I'm a Christmas Eve person! I just want something pretty to cheer me up - lots of lights everywhere.

SunshineCake · 15/11/2020 19:25

YABU not to know why as I would think it was obvious. People have had a shit year and are trying to bring joy.

Kissthepastrychef · 15/11/2020 19:26

Ours goes up the day after DD breaks up from school. Why ? Because we make a donation to school funds and have it 😃. It's a nice ritual, they break up at lunchtime then we go back and pick it up later and decorate in the evening. Makes it really special and really emphasises "you're on holiday for Christmas now"

I start subtle decorations from Advent

Kljnmw3459 · 15/11/2020 19:26

People need cheering up. They'll be fed up with the Christmas stuff by 23rd December though. I think most of these people will take their Christmas decs down right after Christmas lunch!

HaggieMaggie · 15/11/2020 19:29

Not a chance, it’s November, I can see absolutely no reason, shitty year or not, to celebrate Jesus’ birthday for two months.

I bloody hate Christmas anyway, but to put decorations up now and take them down when? 5th Jan? Ugggh

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 15/11/2020 19:30

There's no harm in it.

Normally I'm all for moaning about xmas songs in shops too early and not being able to find birthday cards in November but honest to god, this year? Do what you need to do to get through.

I think part of it is the closer we get to Christmas the closer we are to this shitfest of a year being over (and yes, we've probably got another good six months of shit after that).

MrsMariaReynolds · 15/11/2020 19:31

Meh. Did you have anything BETTER to do over lockdown, Op? I can't fault them. It's been a rubbish year for all of us, might as well bring a little bit of joy into our lives. Who cares if it's a tad bit earlier than usual.

Some people don't think of Christmas decorations as a burden or a chore, and genuinely enjoy having them up for however long that is.

S111n20 · 15/11/2020 19:32

Ours went up tonight. So cosy.

HmmSureJan · 15/11/2020 19:32

I've seen two up today and one last week. Cheered me up. I want to put mine up too but my children told me to stop being silly Sad

nosswith · 15/11/2020 19:32

None of my neighbours have and I did not see any lights or tree on my daily walk when it was getting dark on Thursday (other days have been earlier).

Whilst I wait until Advent, I can understand if those who find Christmas preparations are such that they never have enough time (or think they haven't) are doing it now when they cannot do some of their Christmas shopping.

LagunaBubbles · 15/11/2020 19:33

@Serin oh you put me to shame haha, I've been saying for years this will be the year I do my own cake! And when I say Ive put my tree up I have...unfortunately its not got any lights or decorations on it yet so is looking a bit bare! Grin

ToDoListAddict · 15/11/2020 19:35

A lot of my relatives have been putting up their Christmas decorations mid November for the last few years so I wasn't surprised they've got theirs up now.
But they are also the ones posting on Facebook on Boxing Day "All decorations down, house nice and clean for the new year!"

Flushii · 15/11/2020 19:36

I think it just makes people a bit happier with everything going on, I also think being at home for this lockdown means people don’t have much else to do

VicSynix · 15/11/2020 19:36

I am usually Grinchy McGrinchface, shouting 'bah humbug' at anyone putting up their Christmas tree before 23 December, but this year ... if people need a bit of cheering up why the hell not?

Feministicon · 15/11/2020 19:37

Oh I won't give up on caring for myself, don't worry. I've just given up on this year having anything good in it and with that, I've given up on my diet. Grin So give me all the bloody cake the shops have!

I'm still exercising though so that kind of counts... Grin probably not gonna be able to exercise off the cake though.[/quote]

To make things lighter and brighter on dark evenings, at a time when they're probably spending more time indoors at home than they would in most years, and most people could do with a bit of cheering up in a depressing year.

DominaShantotto · 15/11/2020 19:37

Lots of my friends put theirs up this weekend - us included. I've got for everything tacky and external lightwise I can muster this year (never have before) as basically - this festive period is going to be shit for the kids - no Christmas discos, no plays (and they're normally HUGE at school and epic), no year group Christmas parties or Santa visits to classes, even the fucking Christmas cards need to do a week in quarantine - so some sparkle, a bit of tinsel and a little bit of light in the darkness to lift it when it's normally such an epic time in primary schools.

Plus the arbiter of Christmas around here is the house around the corner who go absolutely bonkers for Christmas and they've put theirs up early so we're allowed after they've deployed the giant snowman, reindeer and million lights.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 15/11/2020 19:38

Because there is some sort of push to put them up early, along with #shop early, #stress early, #get sick of it all early.

Why not just light a few candles?

Ideasplease322 · 15/11/2020 19:38

Whatever cheers you up.

Early Christmas decorations depress me for some reason, even though I love Christmas. Won’t be before 12 December in my house.

madcatladyforever · 15/11/2020 19:40

I hardly ever put anything up as I live alone but everything's up and blazing this year. I need cheering up and so does the cat.

Wandafishcake · 15/11/2020 19:41

To cheer myself up!

Hoppymclimpy · 15/11/2020 19:42

Ours went up last week, usually we are mid Dec.
Our reasons..... It's been a shitty year for us, like many others. I'm on the vunerable list so spent Lockdown 1.0 inside or in the garden. Husband walked out on us in September as he 'couldn't cope with a disabled wife ', and 9 year old DD and I decided 'fuck it', we wanted a tree so we went to B&M chose a rather tacky snow covered 5ft monstrosity (her choice) and bloody loved decorating it. Every time I come into our lounge I smile. It's given us that little bit of light and hope in a shit storm of crap, so, yep, those are our reasons!
Frankly 2020 is a year like no other, do what makes you happy, be that a Christmas tree or prancing round the house naked.... Anything goes this year I reckon x
