AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

I am putting 2 giant trees up on Friday and covering the house with lights and decs. why? Because its been a crap year and also because I want to and I can. If my garden was big enough I would also have the big inflatable characters up. But alas I will be lucky to get a small xmas branch in my shoebox of a garden. Whether you love it or loathe it have a fantastic time everyone.

Cuz we've got fuck all else to do 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

lubeybooby · 17/11/2020 08:23

as far as I know it's not an intentional thing like the clapping just a lot of people feeling the same away

This year has been so shit for so many people. I'm a Christmas grinch and never allow the tree up til as late as possible, preferably til after mid December.

Even I'm craving some festivities and pretty lights etc so I did the tree yesterday

hopeishere · 17/11/2020 08:25

But if it's for early cheer then come the middle of December what are they going to do to cheer themselves up?!

I saw a few on insta this weekend - one because "the kids wanted it up" and" it gave us something to do" - play a game, paint, go for a walk rather than make an already over commercialised event six weeks before it happens.

People need to stop expecting so much of Christmas as a panacea to all that ills them.

In my view it's really chavvy to put your decorations up now!

Parker231 · 17/11/2020 08:27

Why do you think it is chavvy to put decorations up when you want? If it makes people feel better surely it’s a positive?

helsteeth · 17/11/2020 08:30

Our whole street put our outside Christmas lights up from 1st November, with the aim of cheering up a very awful year. We have had so many compliments from passers by and on local social media, with the majority of people saying that it has made them smile. It's started a bit of a trend in our village with more and more doing the same.

In a normal year I wouldn't dream of doing this, but this isn't a normal year and if we can do something to lift other people's spirits that's brilliant. (It's also had a knock on effect of reducing people's speed down our road as they slow down to look at the lights, usually we are a bit of a rat run!).

We won't be putting our indoor decs up until December but I've seen a few Christmas trees in windows. Each to their own, whatever gets you to the end of 2020 is worth doing.

lynsey91 · 17/11/2020 08:44

Laughing at being called chavvy for putting Christmas decorations up already.

I could not care less if I am chavvy or not. Me and DH think they look great and a couple of neighbours have said they like them.

We have a large front garden and I am thinking about getting some of those inflatable figures and more lights and really go overboard.

I could just as easily say that it's a bit chavvy to confuse "ails" with "ills"...

And there's the heart of it: good old fashioned Mumsnet classism dressed up as supposed good sense (how do you know when people will get sick of their decorations?) and moral superiority (now it's about anti-capitalism, snore...). You don't truly believe that people put decorations up instead of doing any other kind of activity, do you? Surely no well-bred, well-educated individual could really believe that people think, "Ooh, Christmas decorations are up, I'll just stare at them all day instead of going for a walk or getting the craft stuff out"?

I bet that if you told the Queen you had your decorations up now, she'd smile and say she was sure they looked delightful and she hoped they made you feel happy.

To be fair, I'm aware that you're far from the first poster to do this, but you're the most recent.

Put your decorations up whenever the fuck you like, especially this year.

Christmasbiscuit · 17/11/2020 09:18

Chavvy Grin it's just a tree and some lights...

moonbells · 17/11/2020 09:27

My outside lights get put up the first dry weekend we get from 15th Nov on, because decorating holly bushes and potted Christmas trees while standing in a flowerbed in the pouring rain is Not Fun.They get switched on 1st Dec. My neighbours like them as it cheers the darkness up. This year, next door will need as much cheering up as possible as she lost her DH to covid very early on, so I'll probably switch on the timers as soon as they're installed this year.

Main decorations indoors won't go up until December, though to be honest, we have four sets of lights that don't ever get taken down because they're - again - hard to access. Just because they're in position doesn't mean they have to be on!

Saracen · 17/11/2020 10:25

I have a lot more time on my hands than I do in most years, because so much of my usual stuff is cancelled. So I am thinking about Christmas early. I still won't put anything up until 1 December but that is several weeks earlier than I usually manage to do it!

Plus, I am thinking I don't want to be traipsing round packed shops this year doing things last minute, so it is better if I plan ahead more than usual and get stuff in good time.

ivykaty44 · 17/11/2020 13:35

Who cares if it’s chavvy to put up Chris decorations in November, lots of lights and colour is cheerful during the winter

Something to cheer up the dark dank winter nights is great

I’ll be a chavvy

Holothane · 17/11/2020 15:15

Well you’ll think this chavy then there fairly lights marketed for teenagers which are really long not Christmas coloured but I’d love some for the bedroom. And I’m 54 our bedroom is my cosy place.

Bluntness100 · 17/11/2020 15:23

Well I have garlands over both fireplaces, two wreaths up, one inside, one outside, and a Garland round the stairs, the tree won’t go up for a couple of weeks. So I’m doing it in stages,

If this makes me chavvy then I’ll happily stand in the queue to be given that honour, 😃

Holothane · 17/11/2020 15:24

Sod it my bedroom tree is going up tonight. I want some sparkle in the bedroom.

Lots of greenery from your garden and handmade?
Bluntness100 · 17/11/2020 15:35

To be honest, no all shop bought,,,even chavvier 😃

Feministicon · 17/11/2020 16:08

I haven’t put any up but if I had I’d rather be chavvy than a judgemental noseache

PrincessNutNut · 17/11/2020 16:29

Are there really people who think you can determine your social class by things like when you put up Christmas decorations? Everyone who doesn't mark Christmas at all must be at bloody count and countess level by now.

Apparently not just when but the type of decorations too.
Whenwillow · 17/11/2020 16:42

I have some difficult Christmas memories and don't particularly enjoy it, but I've come to see festive lights as a lovely way to brighten up the winter days. I avoid traditional decorations and put up 'winter' ones instead. Works for me, and I don't mind what other people do or think.

Janegrey333 · 17/11/2020 17:03

Sounds lovely and easier!
Bluntness100 · 17/11/2020 17:07

Yes, I’m far too lazy to be messing with holly 😃

Holothane · 17/11/2020 17:43

The flat near us has lights winter ones I love seeing them in the dark.

Yeah, this. Especially with kids to amuse and everything closed.

Disclaimer - prob won't get round to it til December as usual. We normally do 15th after dd's birthday but I think we'll do it earlier this year.
