AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

Because they bring a bit of joy and light into all this misery .

Bluntness100 · 17/11/2020 18:59

@tsmainsqueeze

Because they bring a bit of joy and light into all this misery .
This basically nails it. It’s a little bit of joy in the middle of lock down,
SomelikeitHoth · 17/11/2020 19:12

Because they can and why not ?

Holothane · 17/11/2020 23:57

My little tree is up and I love it.

TheChosenTwo · 18/11/2020 23:45

We never put ours up til mid December - way too early for me! But I’ve seen a lot up already round here and I love the lights and decorations.
Dh and I are still going to work, the dc are still going to school, we don’t feel very locked down in that respect, it’s just the socialising which we are missing. A tree in the house won’t fix that but then we are getting enough human interaction at work which I know a lot of my WFH friends are really missing being stuck at home - if they can make themselves happier with their decorations up they can crack the fuck on 🎄

ProtectedPeas · 19/11/2020 05:26

It makes me smile to see others put their lights up - it’s like a community hand hold - like we’re reaching out in the darkness - it makes me feel a wee bit emotional when I see them. I might put my own up - outside though, that bloody tree is not annoying me for 6 weeks this year.

ritzbiscuits · 19/11/2020 08:45

@ProtectedPeas that's a lovely way of putting it. One of the houses that usually has tons of lights outside has definitely gone up earlier than usual. My little boy said it made him smile and feel happy, so that says it all. It's to cheer us all up.

Valkadin · 19/11/2020 09:18

I put mine up quite late and don’t usually like them up early but this year is like no other so if anyone wants to do anything to cheer themselves up then fine by me.

romany4 · 20/11/2020 14:06

I'm putting mind up tomorrow.
It's been a god awful year for my family. I didn't have a Christmas last year due to coming down with gastric flu on Christmas Eve.
My DH had a bad car accident in February, Eldest Ds fell down the stairs in his new home and broke both legs in March. We all got Covid and then my youngest Ds lost the sight in one eye. Literally overnight. Woke up blind in one eye.
And just to too it all off. This month MIL was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

So my tree is going up. I'm a Christmas person and it's the only thing that can lift my spirits right now.

CounsellorTroi · 20/11/2020 14:12

I really want to put my decs up but am putting it off as long as I can. Especially the little light up twig tree from M & S on the hall table. I want to put baubles on it. But it's too early. We got our first Christmas card earlier in the week, how ridiculous is that?

JustAPassingFashion · 20/11/2020 14:16

I think the short answer is because 2020 had been an utter shitshow.

Ours isn't up yet, but it will be by tomorrow. The kids can't see their family and friends and so much has been cancelled, if we can cheer them up from inside the house then so be it!

Batikbed · 20/11/2020 14:31

Its still too early, its not even advent yet and christmas doesn't even begin until Christmas day. I know people will say they are not religious and so those dates mean nothing to them but people have been feasting and celebrating around the winter solstice for 1000's of years.

Breaking with those traditions because you can't contain yourself and live in the moment turns christmas into little more than a shopping festival.

There are lots of ways to make things at home special and cosy without blowing your load over christmas a month early.

PostsAndRuns · 20/11/2020 16:03

I would love to put the Christmas decorations up now, but I know that the DC's secondary/sixth form schoolwork will be full-on until the last day of term and if I put the decorations up now it just makes having to revise for tests and write essays in mid-December so much worse because it encourages the feeling that you should be relaxing or, god forbid, enjoying life and happy. No chance of that.

PostsAndRuns · 20/11/2020 16:04

But my neighbour's bright colourful lights suddenly appearing on a dark night in March cheered me very much that evening.

Parker231 · 20/11/2020 16:58

@Batikbed - we have different traditions to you. The Christmas tree goes up the weekend before Christmas and down on NYE as Christmas is over and it’s time to start a new year.

This year the decorations are going up early (first time ever) as I think they look nice and cheerful.

Isitsixoclockalready · 20/11/2020 17:03

I love walking around looking at decorations. I don’t want to do indoor decorations too early as they’ll get knocked about by the children but the outdoor lights are up.

Batikbed · 20/11/2020 17:09

@Parker231 That sounds totally reasonable, but spoke to a neighbour who has hers up now, and takes them down on boxing day because and I quote "once you've got your presents, christmas is over" wow, talk about missing the point.

I still think its lovely to maintain the ancient traditions and celebrate right through the new year and the whole of christmas and its a little sad for me to see these traditions die out as more and more people start to put up decorations in early to mid november and then call it quits after christmas day. It reeks of consumerisim, reeks of it, but then it is the new religion for many people.

Note: I am not personally religious but I don't want shopping and stuff to fill that space.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/11/2020 17:12

My tree is going up this weekend and will stay up until the 12th Night - I like to make it worthwhile!

hellymissy · 20/11/2020 17:17

Because there sweet FA all to do...I thought this would be obvious!!?

Parker231 · 20/11/2020 17:28

Batikbed - for us Christmas is family, partying, presents and too much food and drink. As those aren’t happening this year, early decorations are a small way to making people feel better.

Holothane · 20/11/2020 18:41

People have started putting wreaths on doors I saw a couple today, I loved it.

Poorpigletsrevenge · 20/11/2020 20:04

I’d love a nice door wreath. I really like the autumn ones American’s do.

I might go shopping!*

Online only of course.
