AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

Besides a little bit of cheer, perhaps some are putting them up now while they have the time?

BestOption · 15/11/2020 18:06

Nothing to do with FakeBook

It's dark, people are at home, the lights are pretty.

I'd have mine up if I could muster the energy to get them out of the loft.

I live alone now, so no longer have someone to bribe to do it 🤣

(& it's hard because my knees are fucked so getting into & out of the loft has suddenly become difficult & painful 😥 )

BessieSurtees · 15/11/2020 18:06

I personally know of 9 people who have put their tree up this weekend Shock 3 of them are neighbours and the other 6 friends and family. Everyone I have asked why? has said they are fed up and want to feel some joy after this shitty year and pretend lockdowns not happening by looking forward to Christmas.

Afolnerd · 15/11/2020 18:07

Lots of my friends have decorated already. If it makes them happy why not.
We haven’t got the decorations up yet, but I have let the kids start building all the Xmas Lego sets. It will take them a couple of weeks to finish them all though. They and everything else apart from the tree will go up on the 1st as usual. Tree goes up about 2 weeks before Xmas.

helloxhristmas · 15/11/2020 18:07

Something to do, the lights make the house cosier inside and cheerier outside.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 15/11/2020 18:08

@moronseverywhere1

Good move!!! Make use of him while he's home!

I'm sure you're used to it, but I'm sorry he's going to be away over Christmas!

bigchris · 15/11/2020 18:09

I saw a lot on the way home from work Friday on the bus

Cheered up the gloomy dark journey no end plus all the lights for Diwali

MsTSwift · 15/11/2020 18:09

Both teen girls have raided our Christmas decs and decorated their rooms - definitely a “thing” this year! I actually don’t have enough for rest of house will have to cross that bridge I suppose!

Laiste · 15/11/2020 18:10

We're going earlier than usual this year.

I don't have FB.

In our case it's because it will be lovely to have a different look about the place (that we've all been stuck in together) and to have twinkly lights and some xmas cheer for longer.

NewYearNewTwatName · 15/11/2020 18:10

DH commented today that he's thinking of putting the outside light up in a couple of days. we'll probably hold off full on decs for a couple of weeks.

But in all honesty when the weather turned last month we both felt christmassy and joked we should get the decs out. weirdly the feeling hasn't gone away.

Laiste · 15/11/2020 18:11

I sat and redid the door wreath yesterday (silver and white off, red and gold on) and will be hanging it on next Sat :)

yellowmaoampinball · 15/11/2020 18:12

I get why people are doing it early, good for them if it makes life a bit cheerier. The bit I don't get and that is irritating me is the panic it seems to be inducing on here - there's been a few threads from people who seem panicked about the fact they haven't started Xmas shopping yet which is bonkers!

Talcott2007 · 15/11/2020 18:13

We don't normally put up until the 1st weekend in Dec - but we got the tree out of the shed today as we were in there getting other stuff out it will probably go up slightly earlier as I'm on Mat Leave with a 3 week old so I will probably do it over a couple of days in between feeds while the big one is at school. Take the pressure off doing it all in one go! I do think people being at home and having the time to do it now is one of the big reasons behind more people doing it earlier this year. A friend put hers up last week just becuasr her childrens year ground had to self isolate becuase of a couple of cases in their bubble - it was somthing different to do to stop them going crazy!

faginssidekick · 15/11/2020 18:13

No idea but they'll peak far too early.

EmeraldShamrock · 15/11/2020 18:13

To escape from this restrictive mundane life during the pandemic. Grin
I will put mine up next weekend earlier than usual.

Crakeandoryx · 15/11/2020 18:15

Because it's been shite and is now dark, cold and grim. Christmas is nice, fun and comforting.

moronseverywhere1 · 15/11/2020 18:17

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants thank you, I'm wondering whether to get him to hide Easter eggs before he goes to cover off that too Grin

MirandaMarple · 15/11/2020 18:20

Something to do, it looks nice, brings joy. I don't an excuse to put more fairy lights up.

MirandaMarple · 15/11/2020 18:21

My Mum tears her decs down on Boxing Day saying she is 'sick of the sight of them' I just can't fathom that? They're so pretty.

ButtWormHole · 15/11/2020 18:21

Is it really that hard to comprehend that 2020 has been a shit show and people want something to look forward to?

FangsForTheMemory · 15/11/2020 18:21

I’m not putting one up at all HTH.

pussycatinboots · 15/11/2020 18:24

My fairy lights in the conservatory have been up since the clocks changed (it gets a bit dark in the kitchen)
The tree went up today and is covered in lights, but no balls yet!

Autumnblooms · 15/11/2020 18:24

Ours went up a few days after Halloween.

-it’s 2020, that means there is no sense and logic so why not
-went into lockdown so might as well do something on the weekends

  • fairy lights and decorations just look so pretty
-refreshes and gives the home a new look, is nice being as we have been indoors since March!
itsgettingweird · 15/11/2020 18:25

Not a thing. But definitely situational.

I is usually don't get mine up until 2/3rd weekend in December as da is a swimmer and it's all end of season meets and chasing county times then!

This year we are in lockdown until hopefully no later than 2nd December. We can then have some getting out and about, shopping etc.

I think people usually shop and then put tree up beginning of December.

I'm actually putting mine up last weekend of November ready for hopefully coming out of a full lockdown.
That's easy for me and I'm actually really wanting to do it earlier because I don't have the things I usually do - to do!

I'm hoping the thing is that people are realising that Christmas may be different - but it's not cancelled. AFAIK 25th December is still on the calendar!

ReggieCat · 15/11/2020 18:25

Because in 2020 normal rules do not have to apply.

If you want to put your Christmas tree up now, do it.
If you don't want to, you don't have to.
If you don't want one at all, that's okay too.

If it's making others happy to have fairy lights and twinkly decorations, why does it bother you?
