AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

OP posts:

We've been putting some of our decs up today. Not the tree but some ornaments etc. Just because the weather is miserable, we can't go anywhere and it's nice to look at Christmas lights when it's cold, wet and dark outside. Plus it's been a good distraction for the DC this afternoon. Outside lights will go up in the week and tree probably next weekend.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 18:25

But if we are stuck inside with surely you’ll hate them all by Xmas?

DookaDakkaDikku · 15/11/2020 18:26

Here in Wales, Halloween and Bonfire Night were cancelled for lockdown so we've started Christmas early. Nothing indoors, but have got the outdoor lights up. Cheers the place up.

Bluepolkadots42 · 15/11/2020 18:27

Probably because there's nothing else much to do- especially if you've got LOs to entertain- in lockdown and this year has been thoroughly bloody miserable. We haven't done decs yet but today we made homemade xmas cards, listened to some xmas songs and watched a christmas film to help while away a wet afternoon. We will try and wait until first weekend of December to do decorations as we usually do, but can't make any promises- another totally wet weekend could have me running for the attic!

islockdownoveryet · 15/11/2020 18:27

I've been wondering this too but I think its because it's the one thing you can actually enjoy during these restrictions .
I don't blame others it's nice to see but not for me yet too early .

WonderMoon · 15/11/2020 18:28

Christmas isn't that far away really.
We are all big Christmas heads in my family and have all put our trees up in the last few days. I don't actually think it's that early.

pintsizeprincess · 15/11/2020 18:28

We're putting the tree up next weekend, earlier than usual. The kids are desperate to see the tree and I've got some new decorations for the house. It's just been a crap year all round and we just want something cheerful and fun to brighten our moods. A few neighbours have put up their outside sparkly lights already and I've seen a few trees in windows .

SunShinesStill · 15/11/2020 18:28

There’s been this little pesky virus which has made some people’s lives a bit shit this year OP. People realised that they like their Christmas decorations, and don’t subscribe to the up on Christmas eve and down on Boxing Day bonkers ness and want the most out of them and why the fuck not

lynsey91 · 15/11/2020 18:29

Normally I would not even think about putting decorations up until about a week before Christmas.

This year we have put 3 sets of lights outside in our trees and will be decorating inside this week.

We don't usually have decorations outside but have decided to go for it this year. We intend getting more and really going overboard.

We have all had a shit year and lots of decorations will cheer a lot of people up. It certainly is cheering me up

SunShinesStill · 15/11/2020 18:30

Really not. I’m happy to have them up for nearly 2 months, I like my decorations and the time and effort gone into them. Do you get fed up of your living room curtains being up 12months of the year? Nope you like them all year round
Oxyiz · 15/11/2020 18:30

I decorated today. I don't care about peaking too early - it wasn't about Christmas really, more about decorating. We've watched wintery movies and have fairy lights everywhere too. It's made the room lovely and warm and beautiful, and given us a deliberate sense of Time in a year that is endless.

But then we don't have kids and Christmas isn't about presents. I don't think I'd do it if we did, it would possibly feel a bit too premature.

2toe · 15/11/2020 18:31

We’ve put up the tree, opened a present and eaten half the Christmas quality streets, 2020 has no rules Grin

MrsJBaptiste · 15/11/2020 18:32

A friend said the other day that when you have your summer holiday booked in August, you'll start holiday shopping and getting excited a couple of months before. So why not get the Christmas decorations up early? We're doing ours the last week in November (when I've always waited until December) as this year is just a bit shit and if we can't go away visitng friends then we might as well have the house looking festive! 🎄

And no, I won't be bored of it by Christmas Day. It will stay up until the day before we go back to work and school 😀

NatalieH2220 · 15/11/2020 18:32

Christmas makes people happy and this has been a tough year for lots so early Xmas decs make people happy!

Rockbird · 15/11/2020 18:32

Not putting ours up till December as we're trying to sort the house to sell, but no judgement on those who have. All bets are off this year, do whatever makes you happy.

Am going out in a little while to sort out the lights on our hedge out front though. It's never too early for fairy lights.

Imissmoominmama · 15/11/2020 18:34

I don’t really like Christmas itself, but I love fairy lights, so my outdoor lights are going up as soon as I can persuade DH to help me. He loves Christmas, but is aghast at the suggestion Grin.

IhateBoswell · 15/11/2020 18:34

I’ve put some warm lights up, I’ll put the Christmas tree up at the end of next week. Why not 🎄

LauraBassi · 15/11/2020 18:35

I know loads who have.

Dd asked me if we could have pink and white decorations this year so to make it fun I agreed.

Went shopping today and the shelves are bare of pink decorations Shock

Looks like it’s going to a pink Christmas in every ones house this year Grin

WitchOfTheWest · 15/11/2020 18:36

Our tree went up this afternoon! Half way through decorating it now. It's been a shit year with naff all to look forward to. Hardly seen my older 2 kids since March and feeling pretty fed up! Flashy lights and tinsel make me happy! 🎄

Mines always pink, teal and silver!!
JazzTheDog · 15/11/2020 18:37

DH put some outdoor lights up on the morning of my sister's funeral so that I had something to cheer me up when I got home.

We get our puppy at the end of the month so possibly won't do a tree indoors this year and might just add more lights outdoors.

Bumbleumbo · 15/11/2020 18:39

Hate these condescending belittling posts. So what if people want to bring some light into what has been a shit storm of a year. Not you’re bag, fine. Stop making people feel shit about it.

MrsJBaptiste · 15/11/2020 18:39

@blue25

It’s ridiculous. How bored can people be? Surely they have other things to keep them amused.
If you're used to spending the weekends visiting family & friends, going to the gym, eating in restaurants, spending the evening in the pub... then yes, you can feel a bit bored (maybe that isn't really the right word) but definitely listless. Our weekends are so much quieter than back in the day so we have more time to do things like decorating for Christmas and why bloody not?
pigsDOfly · 15/11/2020 18:39

Lots of decorations up already near me, I noticed today.

Someone I know puts their decorations up around this time every year.

I don't put Christmas decorations up so maybe I'm missing the point of them, but surely, if they're there to make Christmas seem special, how can it seem special if they've been up and gathering dust for over a month before the event?

By the time you get to Christmas day they've just become part of the scenery.

fairydustandpixies · 15/11/2020 18:40

Personally, I won't be putting up any decorations this year. I live alone, my family live a couple of hours travel away, it's unlikely I'll be able to see any of them. We always spend Christmas together, this year I dont think it'll happen.

I don't want to be reminded that Christmas is approaching because my heart will be broken even more. So no Christmas in this house, just me and the dog!
