AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

@devildeepbluesea

I suppose it's to cheer themselves up.

Personally I'd be sick of the sight by the 1st of December so mine won't go up before the 11th of December, as usual.

That's exactly how I feel!
Lucyk1 · 16/11/2020 18:08

It's only Novemeber and I'm already fed up seeing people put their trees up. Come Christmas these people are going to be absolutely fed up with it all and their tree will be down boxing day!
I've a 5 year old and if I put my tree up now, he'd be fed up waiting for the big day to come.

cherish123 · 16/11/2020 18:11

Why would someone put a Christmas tree up in November?

Oscarsdaddy · 16/11/2020 18:12

Far too soon, some friends posted their tree photos on FB back on 7th November which was fucking mad.

Second weekend of December is acceptable nothing sooner and they come down 3rd January no later

PrincessNutNut · 16/11/2020 18:21

You have all been told.

isitsummertimeyet · 16/11/2020 18:24

Put ours up a week ago and the kids love it, already eaten all the chocolates on the tree without me even getting a sniff of one.

makes the outside look more warm and homely and xmasly, i dont care about what others think, ive done it for my children after a shit year of losing their only grandad, their uncle and their dad being in hospital for 12 weeks for a life saving operation.. 2020 can fcvk right off now, ready for the nonsense of 2021 now

LisaLee333 · 16/11/2020 18:34

@Poorpigletsrevenge

100% in agreement with the people saying they hate these belittling threads, acting like people are weird/arseholes/sad etc because they have put their Christmas decorations, tree, and fairy lights up in mid November to cheer themselves up a bit.. It's just so petty, mean, and spiteful to have a go at people. It's not affecting you is it? (Or anyone else who is making derogatory comments.) Hmm

Sure, it's a bit early, but so what? We have our tree up, and all the decorations too. AND a multitude of lights outside, all over our garden, at the front AND the side. Also in every window. Not switched the lights on yet, but intend to do it this Thursday evening.

7 other homes in our cul de sac (out of 12,) have all theirs up too, and we are ALL switching our lights on this Thursday at around 5pm. The other 5 will put theirs up/switch everything on not long after. All 12 homes do it every year in our cul de sac, (between 1st and 3rd of December usually,) and it looks spectacular. And we put so much time and effort into it all, that like HELL are we only putting them up for a week or 2. They stay up for 5 weeks at LEAST.

It's all a lot of fun, our lights are beautiful, our tree is lovely, and our decorations are fab. I couldn't give a shiny shit what anyone thinks. People moaning and griping are the same ones who usually poo-poo Valentines Day, and anything nice, romantic, or fun really! Fucking mood hoovers! Wink

We usually put everything up on 1st December (including all the lights) because we WANT to. But this year we have done it early because (as many people have said,) it's been such a dark, grim year.

And again, like several other posters I am not apologising for it, and anyone who doesn't like it, is free to not look at it. I don't complain or comment about them NOT putting the Christmas decorations, tree and lights up til 23rd December, so why they feel the need to comment on me putting them up 5-6 weeks before Christmas just eludes me. Mind your own business eh? Hmm

I LOVE Christmas, and I certainly won't be told by some random nobody, when I should put my decorations, tree, and lights up, and when I should take them down! As I said, I don't care if yours are only up for 5 days, (23rd to 28th December,) so why you care about mine being up 6-7 weeks, just baffles me.

As a pp said, surely you can find something else to fret about, other than things that have no affect on you at all. Wink I know it's an over-used cliché, but the phrase 'get a life' springs to mind.

MadameBlobby · 16/11/2020 18:35

@wendz86

People are having a rubbish year and are bored at home, seems reason enough to me.

Greenbread · 16/11/2020 18:35

I keep my fairy lights up all year round. I prefer these as lights in the evening rather than the main light

I put my tree up at the end of October with Halloween decorations; now there are a few Christmas fairies on it.

I don’t really put many other decorations up; I just like the tree and the fairy lights

Normally I wait until the end of November but just needed Christmas to start a bit earlier this year.

MadameBlobby · 16/11/2020 18:38

Although personally I think I would find it more depressing to have them up early. An ongoing reminder of how shit Christmas will be this year. If I didn’t have kids I wouldn’t put mine up at all. Each to their own though it doesn’t bother me what other people do.

FelicisNox · 16/11/2020 18:42

Because people think it will make them happy..... it won't.

They will be happy until 2nd week of December and then they will be over it and sick of the sight of Christmas which is why, despite loving Xmas I will not be putting my stuff up for at least another 2 weeks.

I don't care what this year has thrown at me I will not be bullied by Covid into putting my decs up!

I like my seasons appropriate and on time thank you muchly.

Leaannb · 16/11/2020 18:45

In the US its tradition to pit them up on the 4th Friday of November or that weekend. Right after Thanksgiving. I jave already started because there is so much to decorate

Coasterfan · 16/11/2020 18:46

Ours always goes up about now 😀 but I think it’s people wanting their house to look nice and cosy snd feeling like there’s something to look forward to, it’s been pretty shit for the majority of people.

skyblu · 16/11/2020 18:48

Because a lot of people are sick of this year and just trying to focus on what’s good.
A lot of people love Christmas and the decs, the lights, to food, the whole experience....so they are grabbing that to lessen the pain & misery that this year has brought.

For me personally, I won’t be putting mine up early. I prefer to keep it really special for a shorter amount of time.

But I won’t knock anyone who wants to get festive early this year.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 16/11/2020 19:00

Because people think it will make them happy..... it won't.

They will be happy until 2nd week of December and then they will be over it and sick of the sight of Christmas

And how exactly do you know it won't make people happy? Why are you so sure they will be sick of the sight of Christmas by the 2nd week of December? Do you know them all personally? Or do you have the ability to predict the future feelings of thousands of complete strangers?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 16/11/2020 19:04

I could not agree more with this. The timing of when people put up their Christmas decorations affects literally nobody other than the people who are putting them up, so why anyone complains is beyond me.

linsey2581 · 16/11/2020 19:05

Every time a Christmas tree goes up before December a little elf takes an axe and kills a baby reindeer. My tree goes up 16th December and is down on Boxing Day (or the day after if I’m working )

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 16/11/2020 19:10

I would never put mine up before December normally but we have decided we’re gonna put ours up this Saturday. Last weekend was so unbelievably boring with no kids activities no shops to go to no restaurants and then it rained the whole time so even going for a walk was a no! Think this month is gonna be so miserable we might as well add a little sparkle!

Poorpigletsrevenge · 16/11/2020 19:24

@LisaLee333 show me a single word I’ve said that belittles others for putting their decorations up early?!

OP posts:
PrincessNutNut · 16/11/2020 19:33

Because people think it will make them happy..... it won't.

What else will and won't make people happy? It would be useful information right now.

lynsey91 · 16/11/2020 19:37

Another reason to put them up early this year is that I have so many Christmas ornaments and decorations and it always seems a shame to only have them out for a week or so. This year is a good excuse to have them on show for longer.

We have never had outside decorations or lights before. It never seems worth it as we don't spend Christmas at home. This year it looks as though we will be at home but even if we get to spend it with family it's nice to have the outside ones and by putting them up this early makes it worthwhile.

A couple of neighbours put lights outside about 2 weeks ago.

CherryValanc · 16/11/2020 19:37

Notices this too. It's like a secret memo went around and I wasn't privy.

I've a neighbour who usually put their decorations up about now. They had their up before Halloween; either they got the menu first or wrote it.

Poorpigletsrevenge · 16/11/2020 19:42

@CherryValanc (ahh, The Outsiders)

Yes! That’s how I feel! I thought it must be ‘for’ something as I saw the pics on Facebook and lots of our neighbours have decorated, but it seeks to be random acts spurred on by cheeriness, which is quite lovely.

OP posts:
kleanex · 16/11/2020 19:42

To be clear - I secretly love seeing all the lights up, it's a cheery sight, it feels very much like a generous act of silliness where it really is needed- I really don't want to put my own up though. (I'm the Grinch do not want to ruin my reputation!)

westenddweller · 16/11/2020 19:45

Because it's all over social media and people are sheep.
