AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

Put ours up today because it's 2020 and it cheered my daughter up. I'm not a moron or religiously illiterate but seeing as the parish church hall has put lights up already I don't think I'm going to be struck down for blasphemy!

kleanex · 16/11/2020 03:09

@VestaTilley

Because, frankly, they’re morons.

As religious literacy in this country declines, so too does the understanding of what Christmas is, what Advent is, and when both begin.

The same people will have it all down by Boxing Day, thereby spectacularly missing the point.

Maybe missing the point for you but I’m guessing they don’t care and they have their own point of view which matters more to them.
avamiah · 16/11/2020 03:13

kleanex,
Lol

lovelemoncurd · 16/11/2020 03:21

I would have thought it was obvious really!

MsTSwift · 16/11/2020 06:01

Isn’t it well known that the Christians hi jacked an existing winter festival so it’s not originally a Christian event at all. It’s you who are the moron VestaTilley 🙄

How funny. What does religion have to do with trees and lights, in your opinion?

Aww, can I join your religion? You sound so lovely and accepting (insert eye roll here)

I’m not a moron. I don’t really care enough about your opinion to justify why we put the tree up yesterday, but it does make me smile to think it bothers you so much. Win win.

LilacPebbles · 16/11/2020 07:13

We're not religious, Vesta
HTH 👍🏻

readingismycardio · 16/11/2020 07:42

Our tree is up too, and is my best tree ever! I love it and it makes me happy so why the hell not? It's been a crappy year, I lost my grandfather and FIL (v recently).

RaspberryCoulis · 16/11/2020 07:53

@devildeepbluesea

I suppose it's to cheer themselves up.

Personally I'd be sick of the sight by the 1st of December so mine won't go up before the 11th of December, as usual.

Exactly this.

Having the Christmas tree up doesn't cheer me up at all, not a Christmas fan. So looking at the calendar it will probably go up 12th or 13th Dec.

(Waiting for the poster to pop up saying that she's never heard of anyone putting their trees up SO early and won't the needles fall off, and feigning innocence that there are these things called artificial trees. Happens every year).

Bluntness100 · 16/11/2020 07:59

It’s just something to look forward to after a crap year.

orangecinnamon · 16/11/2020 08:15

I think that's already happened above.

There were actually a few campaigns on FB I saw @Poorpigletsrevenge but nothing quite specific as the clapping campaign. There was a meme of sorts going round saying 'lets do Christmas early' and a 'lockdown lights /light up lockdown campaign when people were encouraged just to do the lights.

It's a bit mild for me to put mine up so I won't 'feel it ' but I agree with you nothing wrong with idea. If I had younger children I'd indulge.

orangecinnamon · 16/11/2020 08:16

Sorry that was in reply to @RaspberryCoulis too...
..

orangecinnamon · 16/11/2020 08:19

It's just occurred to me that MIL asked me to get her Christmas tree delivered last week in November (real one from local plant supplier) and she never puts her tree up before 15th December. She's not on Facebook either !

Poorpigletsrevenge · 16/11/2020 08:52

@orangecinnamon thanks, that’s good to know.

Knowing my luck, I would’ve put my tree up then discovered it was linked to a ‘trees up for Brexit’ or something or a campaign by the Daily Star! Grin

Christmas has always been a Christian event.

Well I'm a Christian and have no idea what you're talking about. We put our tree up when we feel in the mood, usually during the first week of December and take the decorations down just before my husband goes back to work. Not every Christian follows the Christian calendar you know and it doesn't make you a special kind of Christian if you do.

I love Christmas, but don't usually bother with lights that the street can see. It's usually just an over the top tree and a few other bits. This year I'm thinking of getting all the lights out and decorating the front windows. We all need a bit of cheering up right now. I don't judge anyone for getting into the Christmas spirit a bit early in 2020.

Also calling people morons (horrible word) and talking about religious literacy seems a bit Hmm.

Mia1415 · 16/11/2020 09:19

We put our tree up yesterday. First time I've ever done it so early. It makes us happy and brings some cheer after a rubbish year. I know lots of people that have done the same.

Whammyyammy · 16/11/2020 09:24

Mine aren't going up until December, as we would be bored of them by Christmas.
But I can understand why people want to put them up early this year

Christmasbiscuit · 16/11/2020 09:25

Tree up here, makes us happy during a miserable year.

minnimiss · 16/11/2020 09:34

It does seem so early, but I can understand people wanting a bit of festive cheer, especially those with young children. My children are much older and not really fussed so I'm going to wait at least until December I think.

Nomnomarrgh · 16/11/2020 09:42

Not only is my tree up early, I’m not going to be celebrating Xmas properly until 7th Jan.Glitterball

Fluffybutter · 16/11/2020 09:45

Dh says ours would be up next week if we weren’t meant to be moving soon !
I think it’s great if it helps to bring some much needed cheer .
Not on fb anymore so I miss all the tree pics . Anyone care to indulge me ?

Letsbepositive · 16/11/2020 09:47

Will put our trees up probably beginning of December, which is about 2 weeks early.

But in the meantime we have all the Diwali lights and the diya look lovely lit up, will put some twinkly lights outside today as well.

Saw the first Christmas tree just before Halloween, if people want to put trees/lights/decorations etc up early why not

Saw the f

kittensarecute · 16/11/2020 09:50

Because we're in a pandemic, stuck in lockdown and everything is poo. If lockdown is extended, mine will be going up early as I will need cheering up Smile
