AIBU to wonder why people are putting up their Xmas decorations so early this year?

Is this spurred on by a Facebook movement or are people just randomly putting their trees up in mid November?

I must admit there are a few houses in my street that have full on light displays outside already and they are cheery to pass by. It's been a shit year so we might as well extend the most joyful part.

I'm tempted but normally I'm a tree up first Saturday of December and down by 31st (i'd have it gone boxing Day if it weren't for the kids 😂) so i think it would drive me insane!

We've never really had a "proper" lockdown here as we're both key workers in a Tier 1 area so I guess I hadn't really considered that others might just be looking for something to do!

simiisme · 16/11/2020 19:50

If it cheers people up, why would anybody criticise them?
I haven't put decorations up yet, but my birthday is early December & I like a week of enjoying my cards on the mantlepiece before we get festive. Plus I think I'd get bored of Christmas displays if they were up from now until early January.
But a little bit of sparkle is bringing people joy in this the shittiest of years, so let them enjoy it.

roxanne119 · 16/11/2020 19:52

Will be putting mine up on the 1st of dec this year don’t normally until last week b4 the day . But this year has been awful so I’m decorating early and feeling it . It’s a chance to get that build up with out getting the build up of going out or shopping in stores ect .

MyWitzEnd · 16/11/2020 20:03

People want winter over I think.

Parker231 · 16/11/2020 20:07

The quicker 2020 is over the better!

Jgb12 · 16/11/2020 20:12

Some people do it every year but it’s been more accepted this year due to the shit year we’ve all had. I can’t stand it when people moan about other peoples trees going up early. Not your house, so why does it matter?

We are putting it up next weekend. Many of my friends have had theirs up for a week or two according to their social media.

orangecinnamon · 16/11/2020 20:19

@LisaLee333 would you consider reading the OPs posts then perhaps you might like to consider apologising to her?

Just a thought

MrsBadcrumble123 · 16/11/2020 20:22

Who cares! Let people do what makes them happy during this utterly s*ite of a year

VickyEadieofThigh · 16/11/2020 20:23

I admit that normally I'm a bit scoffy at people putting up their decs before December at the earliest but this year I can entirely understand why they're doing it.

Rainbo83 · 16/11/2020 20:29

Well advent starts in November this year so I am using that as justification to put tree up last week of November. I haven't seen any Facebook posts of decorations up this early though.

LovelyIssues · 16/11/2020 21:08

Because people want an "early cheer" personally don't see the point doing it so early or the buzz will have worn off by December surely Confused

DaisyDreaming · 16/11/2020 21:11

Last year loads of people all decorated at the start of November, at the risk of sounding old it seems to get earlier this year but some people I know who wouldn’t normally decorate until Dec have done so just to find something happy

JFM27 · 16/11/2020 22:59

I never put up decorations i live alone i never see the point. And yes ive never seen so many up so early.Down the road from me theres a bloody great father Christmas in front garden.i go there for a walk most days ive got too see it every day.ill be sick of it by end of Nov.

I can see people want cheering up but how will a few decorations do this,it certainly wouldnt me, i just hope i can socialise a bit before Christmas and see friends.Christmas day unless a close friend is at home and not with partners family i spend christmas day alone,No partner, kids only child, parents dead but being an only was only ever my parents and i,so being on own doesent bother me .Christmas i just want it over with,l like the social bit before and no doubt this stupid lockdown will carry on so wont get that.

So no i agree cant see point in christmas decorations in Nov.cant see much point in Christmas with all this.

LoverOfAllThingsPurple · 17/11/2020 00:23

Because we want rid of 2020

Rosebel · 17/11/2020 01:08

Putting your decorations up early won't bring Christmas any quicker or end 2020 any quicker.
Obviously it's totally up to everyone when your tree etc goes up but thinking it'll end a shit year any quicker is a bit strange IMO.

Mamanyt · 17/11/2020 01:33

I imagine they are trying to lift the spirits of their families (and themselves). And a few may actually wonder who will be here at Christmas, and why wait?

lovemelongtime · 17/11/2020 07:34

Why do you think? Seriously? Not really hard to guess, shitty year, need cheering up.

spidermomma · 17/11/2020 07:37

I did mine last week. Purely to cheer us up as we've had a shit year with covid and other things. Just makes us merry and happy specially when you wake up an come down to the tree ! Yayyy x

spidermomma · 17/11/2020 07:37

And I'm not on social media! Plus we take it down after Xmas day straight away due to birthdays ! So making the most of it !! X

LadyCatStark · 17/11/2020 07:40

It’s not a Facebook ‘thing’ but people often post pictures of their tree once it’s up and the more people that see trees going up on FB and/ or their street, the more people decide to join in.

People are also stuck at home at the weekends so it’s something to do.

We’re waiting til 29th November but if the rest of the street keep on decorating, I’m sure DH will relent.

Kate139 · 17/11/2020 07:41

Probably because people are trying to cheer themselves up from this nearly year long misery fest! ⛄🎄🍾🎁

ivykaty44 · 17/11/2020 07:47

Im looking at putting the Christmas decorations up next weekend - it'll brighten the place up and make it more cheerful

TheNoodlesIncident · 17/11/2020 07:54

I don't think I'll do my interior decorations early, I still have to get the living room decorated (with paint and wallpaper) but I'll get the fairy lights outside done as soon as.

It's nothing whatsoever to do with Christmas or Jesus or whatever, only that the winter is a dark, cold miserable time and some coloured lights outside will help mitigate that. With the lights on, the darkness is an essential foil that makes them look glorious and cheerful and without which, the lights would look insipid and dull. Without the lights, it's just darkness. So dreary! I would like to leave them out for the whole of January and maybe some of February, for a little cheer through the worst of winter. I always take them in after the first week of January though, in case someone raises an eyebrow at me Grin

Indoor decorations: bothering nobody else. Whatever floats your boat.

I don't get sick of the sight of mine because I actually like the ones I've chosen. Obviously some people have either bought uninteresting, bland or downright ghastly decorations if they do get sick of them after a few weeks, or else they just don't like temporary changes? Who knows. I'm not judging but I don't really like the air of judgement that "mine are up for as short a period as I can get away with" posters have.

Lexilooo · 17/11/2020 08:13

Even my normally grinch like husband suggested putting the outside lights up this week. We don't normally put ours up until the week before.

We haven't put them up yet but I can understand it this year.

Parker231 · 17/11/2020 08:14

I imagine a lot of people might leave their lights up well into January/February to make everything feel brighter and better whilst we get through Covid.
