I hate my height

Purpledolphin223 · 14/11/2020 17:10

I’m 5’8, nearly 5’9 and I absolutely hate my height

Most of my life many of my friends have been shorter than me, dresses don’t cover my bum, cropped shirts are just a nightmare and have only had one relationship (I’m 20)

I just feel so unfeminine sometimes, most guys are my height and pay me no interest as I’m not shorter than them, I think I have a nice personality and I’m kind and friendly, but it feels not enough :((

I just don’t know how to get past this, I’ve always dreamed of being smaller. Even photos make me so embarrassed I stand out ridiculously tall from the others

Obviously heels are not an option

Sorry the rambling, just needed to get this off my chest, my friends say my height is lovely but I don’t feel happy at all

I’m 5ft and I’m mid 40s, so grew up when it was much less common for girls to be this tall. I like my height. I’ve never had any problems with men - lots really like it. I’m broad too, so not a waif. I’ve been described as Amazonian many times.

I don’t know why you say obviously heels re out - I wore 4 inch heels a lot till I was 30 and I still wear 2-3 inch heels now. Do you think it’s your self consciousness and lack of confidence affecting you rather than your height. I would say embrace it. Stand tall. Put your shoulders back and own the room.

As for clothes I was never scared of an extreme mini skirt so that didn’t bother me. The waist on dresses and sleeves on tops not sitting right did tho so I found some places which fit me and stuck to a fairly simple/classic style (buying less but spending more meant a crisper less fussy look and better material which doesn’t pull and shrink) as a lot of florals, frills and fabrics can be too much if you are tall. I found Zara jumpers had a good sleeve fit. FCUK, Hobbs, Reiss, Whistles, Gap, Jigsaw, Jaegar, DVF, 7 for all mankind and Boden seem to be the best, most generous fit on me now. You can pick up good bargains in most of these at Brandalley.

MrsKoala · 14/11/2020 19:58

5ft 10in that should say.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 14/11/2020 20:00

I am 5"9 and have never felt tall and I live in Wales which isn't known for height!

tobedtoMNandfart · 14/11/2020 20:01

Good lord @Twizbe I was being lighthearted!

FlatScreenTV01 · 14/11/2020 20:03

Models are tall! Princess Diana was 5'11" You're blessed

BikeRunSki · 14/11/2020 20:03

I’m 5’8”. I think this is average height fir all people in the works or something. It’s a great height! Cinema seats, aeroplanes, supermarket shelves etc all “work” for me. My height is largely in my torso, so I do sometimes have trouble getting long enough tops. I’d also quite like smaller feet (I’m a size 9), but only fir the ease of buying shoes!

I’m surprised you find that most most are smaller than you though. My 6’4” brother didn’t spike growing until he was about 22 though, so give it a few years and your make friends may start getting taller!

ThatsAllFolks · 14/11/2020 20:05

I've five eleven. I'm the smallest in my family. Always wanted to make six foot, thwarted by nature. Embrace who u are. I wear heels if I want to. I have a five eight female 12y old who hates being tall and it is my hope I can get her to love herself.

SenorFrog · 14/11/2020 20:05

I'm 5'7" and have only ever had 2 friends shorter than me, everyone is taller. Now my dd is 5'9", she's bloody gorgeous. I'm surprised you think 5'8" is too tall, I'd stay it's pretty standard height nowadays.

peepercountry · 14/11/2020 20:17

Go to the Netherlands for a weekend, you will feel
short

Twizbe · 14/11/2020 20:20

@tobedtoMNandfart

Good lord *@Twizbe* I was being lighthearted!
The OP is obviously finding her height troubling, your comment (and all the ones along the lines of 'I'm short be thankful / give me some height) don't help.
SBTLove · 14/11/2020 20:20

I’m 5’9, my sister is 5’11, my son is 6’4, be proud to be taller, it has lots of advantages 🙂

DuringDinnerMints · 14/11/2020 20:22

Yup, 6ft tall here and I hate it. It causes me no end of problems, both practical and medical. I have always hated being tall and most people just don't understand.

JustAboutPresentable · 14/11/2020 20:27

I’m 5’11. I’ve always liked being tall. I stand up straight, embrace my height and even wear heels.

It’s a shame to get so down about something you can’t change, OP. How much is this affecting you? Is it worth seeking counselling?

ghostmous3 · 14/11/2020 20:31

And as for people saying ooo just think of your long beautiful legs when you are tall.
Not me! I was blessed with a long torso and short stumpy legs 🤣

fairydustandpixies · 14/11/2020 20:38

I'm 49 and 5'9". I used to fret about it then one day thought 'sod it', started wearing heels that put me 6ft plus and I've loved it ever since! On first dates I always wear heels to see how I feel if the guy is shorter and also to see reactions from taller guys. I do prefer taller men but have a fwb who is 5'7" and it's true, height doesn't matter in bed!

You're you OP, embrace yourself, strut your stuff and don't waste the best years of your life being anxious. You're gorgeous, shoulders back, head up and smile because you're wonderful!

Carouselfish · 14/11/2020 20:39

I'm 6ft. Five 8 to me would be average looking! I only wore heels when looking exceptionally fabulous but it didn't stop me having boyfriends taller, shorter and the same height, it didn't stop me having a pixie hair cut although I did feel less fem than if I'd been petite with it I suppose. In the end, confidence is all op. Shoulders back, head up and make sure you take up space! Nothing worse than trying to shrink yourself.

Saz12 · 14/11/2020 20:40

6ft, late 40’s (female). Honestly it doesn’t bother me and never has (sorry OP). I’m not pretty so that probably bothered me more (when younger, I don’t care now!). I did have a pretty good figure, though, so clothes weren’t too painful to buy. I have disproportionately long arms, which is harder to get things to fit.
I do think the fashion for “ankle skimming” trousers isn’t a tall woman’s friend - I know I’d just feel like I’d bought a(nother) pair that’s too short!
I do think it influences how people treat you - generally people see me as assertive when I’m actually a complete pushover, and sporty when I hate sport and force myself to do a very small amount of exercise.

fairydustandpixies · 14/11/2020 20:40

Oh and my 17yr old niece is 6ft!

PreTishBerson · 14/11/2020 20:42

I think if you are chunky AND tall it can look intimidating but waif like and tall = model look.

Carouselfish · 14/11/2020 20:42

Oh and op, move to Holland! Lived there for a year and remember looking left and right on a railway platform and boggling at the fact all the other commuters were my height or more!!

Dixiechickonhols · 14/11/2020 20:42

I’m 5 ft 8 and don’t feel tall it’s pretty normal height. I’m one of the shortest in family. No issues with clothes either. I wear tall in jeggings. May be more of issue in teen girl type clothes? Are you fixing on height in way some people get hung up on weight - if only I was x my life would be perfect. It won’t be. Get some taller friends. Maybe look into some body positivity stuff online.

Justbrutallyhonest · 14/11/2020 20:45

Hi Op, I’m a guy just 5ft 11, it doesn’t matter 5 ft 9in is a great height, we love tall women and shorter women too.

Things can be attractive but height not deciding factor, it’s you we want to know, what’s inside, who you are.

You will find the one and your young, no pressure, plenty of time for life love and enjoyment, COVID won’t last, you will have plenty of adventures

JumpingJamboree · 14/11/2020 20:46

I'm 5'9" and love it. Have no problems being this tall and will happily wear 6 inch heels whenever I can, including to work!

Iamthewombat · 14/11/2020 20:49

What’s with “most guys are my height”? Where are you living? Munchkin land?

most guys are my height and pay me no interest as I’m not shorter than them

Who wants to be with an insecure shortarse?

Can you move to the Netherlands? I am joking. Actually, I don’t think this is about your height at all. I think you are insecure about not having had a proper relationship yet and you’re trying to find a reason.

Well, don’t. You are only 20. You just haven’t met the right one yet. I didn’t get a proper boyfriend until I was 22. I have been beating them off with a stick ever since (I am 49 and have been married for twelve years). Don’t blame your physical characteristics for random stuff.

You will be glad of your height when you gain confidence. As others have noted, clothes look much better and you are more imposing as a tall woman. I am 5’8” and look fabulous in clothes. I would like to be taller still.

diamondpony80 · 14/11/2020 21:15

As a shy teenager I hated being taller than all my friends (5’9) and it was hard being taller than most boys at that age. I loved it in my twenties though because as a size 10 I could carry off most clothing well. The only thing I had a problem with was high heels - I loved them but didn’t like how tall they made me. Luckily I married a guy who is 6ft so although I don’t wear heels that much any more, I can wear them without being significantly taller than him.
