Will Donald pardon the turkeys or will the turkeys pardon Donald?

The twitter warnings are a bit weird. Sometimes they are only visible if you actually click on the tweet

DuncinToffee · 15/11/2020 15:22

I can't see any of those warnings, how strange. Maybe it's my tablet, will check if it's different on my phone

Probably generated by an "algorithm"
DuncinToffee · 15/11/2020 15:24

They show up on my phone but not on my (ancient) tablet

Are you using the app, or the website ? I see them on the website.

As a rule, I swerve "apps" ....

DuncinToffee · 15/11/2020 15:59

It's my tablet that is the problem, it can't cope with twitter on a webpage only on the app. It's old but still going Smile

I totally agree with that re Twitter, Facebook etc - in fact it's opened my eyes to social media's role in enabling and fostering extremists, and making it easy for them to coordinate. Trump's behaviour since Florida has been madness and he has been called out by all (even fox) of the mainstream media.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 15/11/2020 16:42

@DGRossetti I have to admit I’ve felt like this since he first rose to power.

DGRossetti · 15/11/2020 16:45

There's nothing new under the sun.

Does there come a point when those in the relevant services can simply ignore Trump and start briefing the incoming administration anyway?

No, not until Biden is inaugurated on 20 Jan. Scrotus is POTUS until Joe takes the oath. But I'd be willing to be there is more going on behind the scenes and under Scrotus' nose 'than are dreamt of in his philosophy'.

At some point can he be sued if he continues making unsubstantiated claims of election fraud? Surely he cannot continue to undermine the result? / Is it treasonous?

He has the same 1st Amendment rights as the ordinary American and it only spills over into treason or sedition if he actually incites insurrection. Innuendo and saying something isn't 'valid' isn't inciting, it's 'freedom of speech'. Baldly saying "Take up arms" or telling people to riot, disobey laws, or block everyday govt business, commerce, activities is.

When do the electoral college confirm the result? Do you think Trump will concede at that point? / according to google the electoral college meets on 14 dec to officially vote.

The election result isn't actually 'official' until the results are counted in a joint session of Congress on 6 Jan 2021 at 1pm EST. The votes are handed to the VPOTUS (Pence) and he opens and counts them before both Houses. If Pence refuses to attend the duty falls to McConnell. It should be interesting either way.

There are other steps before that day in the process. But no one has ever had to pay attention to all the steps before because they never really 'mattered' as once a POTUS concedes it's all pure formality, and the POTUS normally concedes as soon as enough states are 'called' to give the other candidate an uncontestable majority (270) electoral votes.

Personally, I don't think POTUS will ever actually concede that Biden won. I think he'll make a statement that he was robbed, the election was crooked, and he's being 'illegally deposed', then he'll either skulk out of the WH during the inauguration or he'll make a public exit a la Nixon which he'll call on all his cult members to gather and witness.

maggiethecat · 15/11/2020 18:11

There is none so blind as those who refuse to see . Do his supporters forget how he said in 2016 that he would only accept the election result if he won?

The man has good form for claiming a rigged election if he's not the winner.

Anniegetyourgun · 15/11/2020 18:13

I used to correspond with someone who had a terrible habit of accidentally leaving out the word "not". I'd have to do a double-read of the context to realise it should have been negative ("I have been very well lately, the hospital is doing further tests" sort of thing). Clearly this also afflicts Trump, as it makes a lot more sense that he should be complaining the election was NOT rigged. He was promised an election in the bag and dammit, some fool ran it straight! What game are they playing?

Regarding the "don't worry, we're just humouring him" stuff from the Republican camp, I do worry rather. It's fairly reassuring when real grown-up officials state that everything will run according to plan as it always does, but so many norms recently have been completely ignored that I can't help almost expecting some kind of unexpected twist (or fairly well telegraphed twist, even) before the end, whatever "the end" turns out to be - hopefully a straightforward inauguration. You know, like Mitch deciding actually he can't possibly read out the result until the whole country has recounted the votes again, again, and/or the last spurious court case has been dragged through the entire court process (while the Supreme Court will of course take its sweet time ensuring every i is dotted and every t crossed and counter-crossed). Or the electoral college doing that thing they do that they're not supposed to do (eek!) because who is going to stop them? It's probably going to be fine... but the "nothing to see here" from the usual suspects doesn't fill one with confidence.

Roussette · 15/11/2020 18:33

Well... while Trump keeps insisting he has won, and tweeting all of this... as I understand it, the transition stalls. POTUS Elect cannot have transition funds released, Covid is not being dealt with and people will die.
He cares nothing.

I read that the lame duck period is absolutely crucial for a smooth handover. Well that ain't happening is it...
It might not be treasonous in a legal sense, but it is in every other way.

Anniegetyourgun · 15/11/2020 20:32

It's spite, isn't it? It probably is in his interests to drag it out, for reasons already explained, but even if it weren't in his interests he still would.

On a lighter note, those angels from Africa (cf. Paula White) seem to have been delayed.

Lweji · 15/11/2020 20:48

Will we watch Biden sign Executive Orders the first day, surrounded by acolytes?
Doubt it.

But he should quickly erase most of 45's legacy.

I'd forgotten about him, DGRossetti.

It will be interesting to see NurseButtercup.

He thinks he has won the election and that he can evade justice.

Bloke needs his Veruca Salts style comeuppance. Not enough people have said “No, you can’t have it” to him in the past.

The tweets yesterday from Ivanka Don Jnr which toe curling hypocritical, good to see their power diminishing though.

The Russian bots seem to have left the threads as well, they’ve obviously decided to concede.

Someone needs to do an intervention. I mean we all know he’s a fool but this is ridiculous.
