I probably need to back away from my screen - but is it just me or has this weekend seen the most ott responses to threads and everyday stuff ever?

I think perhaps lockdown is getting to people - but without mentioning specific threads I’ve seen the biggest over reactions ever on threads.

This isn’t a “MN” is going downhill thing, more Aibu to think that responses are suddenly absolutely mental.

(Semi- lighthearted).

@thenightsky

MN doesn't reflect real life where I am. Its on-line entertainment.
^This. According to MN Anyone who - Lets off a firework Voted Leave Is am Man

Should be subject to immediate death without right to appeal.

MLMbotsgoaway · 09/11/2020 12:47

@FortunesFavour to be fair only the OP was batshit on that one!

WhySoSensitive · 09/11/2020 12:49

Hahaha dog threads.
They’re my favourite. Dogs should only be on a lead and absolutely never ever ever interact with anyone but the owner.

FortunesFavour · 09/11/2020 12:49

It was an absolute belter - hats off to the Asda poster for sheer brass neck Grin

MLMbotsgoaway · 09/11/2020 12:52

@WhySoSensitive dogs should be trained to not so much as look in a strangers direction - if they dare to give you a glance and wag their tail at a stranger really they should be PTS.

The neighbours parcel delivery threads are a bit mad. And all delivery men need a printed schedule of children's naps. And ringing a doorbell twice certainly merits a few years in prison.

CoronaBollox · 09/11/2020 12:53

People feel they now have the right to bollock people online "for the greater good" before it wasnt acceptable to call someone a selfish murderer for leaving the house...

Also very unlikely posters would speak to others in RL the way they do on here. I always smile to myself when I read "I just give them the death stare and say EXCUSE ME that normally works" 😂 I'm in N London and that would be an invitation to a full blown argument.

Most of the responses are batshit, rude or make you think wtf!

VinylDetective · 09/11/2020 12:57

It certainly is crazy. I’ve just been told to “get off my thread”!

MLMbotsgoaway · 09/11/2020 13:00

I think I’ve worked it out... it’s because there are no good parking threads at the moment. A backlog of rage has built up.

OP posts:
Reborn2020 · 09/11/2020 13:00

@whatdoidonowffs

WONT SOMEBODY THINK OF THE FUR BABIES !!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
MLMbotsgoaway · 09/11/2020 13:00

@VinylDetective I heard that in a farmers voice - along the lines of “gerrof my land”

OP posts:
FortunesFavour · 09/11/2020 13:01

I suppose it’s better that all the pent up anger comes out here rather than irl, plus we all need a bit of entertainment

VinylDetective · 09/11/2020 13:01
@VinylDetective I heard that in a farmers voice - along the lines of “gerrof my land”
I heard as Peggy Mitchell “Get outta ma pub”! Complete with pointy finger.

MLMbotsgoaway · 09/11/2020 13:05

@FortunesFavour in all seriousness I think it depends. When someone’s whinging about a free Asda order - so what. But when someone is really distressed and posters are ripping them to pieces I think it’s probably pretty damaging.
I don’t want to say which thread - but there’s one running at the moment that really concerns me (and have reported it) as think posters are goading the OP into taking very much the wrong action,

I like MN. I wouldn't come here if I didn't. I like that it's a major, well-known forum that is predominantly female and, while it might be grounded in parenting and family life, is not restricted to those things and is open to all subjects. It does get nutty in places, but it's still one of the most civil forums I've come across. I've never personally seen any doxxing, rape or death threats, photoshopped porn and so on.

I do find I need to take breaks from time to time. Usually because the class obsession and self-righteous moralising gets to me a bit sometimes. That's still pretty mild, all things considered. Lately there's been a lot of internalised misogyny and if anything drives me away again for a bit, I think it'll be that. ("No, Sheba! Don't go! We need you!!!") I just struggle to get my head around a female-centric site in which a significant number of users think it is ok to call other women sluts, whores and munters, even and especially when it's actually a man who's done them wrong. Or take an example of a man crapping on his family as a reason to castigate women in general.

We really need to stop it. If you're reading and you do this, please, please, please stop. It's not ok to use sexualised misogynistic slurs with no male equivalent, even if the woman in question really is an arsehole who has personally done you wrong. If you're struggling to find words to express your feelings, use whichever ones you'd have to make do with if she were a man. Use the Shakespearean Insult Generator if you need some inspiration. There are loads of versions, this one is pretty good: m.literarygenius.info/a2-shakespeare-insult-generator.htm . Come on, calling someone of either gender a shameless clay-brained malt-worm has to do the job, surely.

This does matter. It really does.

FortunesFavour · 09/11/2020 13:13

@MLMbotsgoaway - absolutely agree. I would never have responded unsympathetically as I did on the Asda thread to someone really suffering in those circumstances. Agree that online pile ons are damaging particularly when people are low and isolated and it’s horrible to see it happen on some threads.
Sadly I think it’s a symptom of the wider anxiety people are feeling, and a “safe space” for them to lash out without consequences....but of course there are consequences, sometimes v tragic.

I don’t know why I enjoy scrolling through the competitive undereaters and overcleanliness threads. I do neither. I think I am mostly shaking my head at how competitive (and exaggerated) they are.

As someone said, on another thread, sometimes reading AIBU is a bit like secretly reading a tabloid - you know it’s mostly exaggerated, if not completely made up. Still a fun way to waste half an hour Grin.

I mainly agree, but to be fair the 'bird and munter' poster was using the words quite differently from usual because of her area.

There's dialect words round here that are a bit dodgy if you aren't local. I can't remember them, but it makes me wince when I hear them. Think it's 'Cocker and heifers' or something.

likethatbutcat · 09/11/2020 13:22

I agree that this has been a particularly batshit weekend.

Didn't realise the Asda delivery charge thread had been zapped.

Very happy to see the carpet fitter thread back.

The one about wearing an apron to have a pee is gloriously weird and illogical.

mrscampbellblackagain · 09/11/2020 13:25

There has been so much nastiness this weekend, I commented on that on one of the threads i was on. I would be very wary of starting a thread at the moment unless I was feeling extremely robust.

averylongtimeago · 09/11/2020 13:37

Oh for the old days of the Friday night drunk thread and general silliness, well mixed up with help, information and humour. As well as field full of vipers of course.

Now someone says something someone else doesn't agree with and it's cuntcalling all round.

Kissthepastrychef · 09/11/2020 13:39

Nah, it's always been like this. Maybe not so much but AIBU has been a hotbed of fighting since I joined.

I remember one particularly unpleasant poster, think she left, called Scottishmummy. I posted about my daughter's first birthday party - basically it has been cancelled once due to snow and I was upset because it looked as if it would be cancelled again on the new date. I just came for a bit of a rant and she was so bloody rude to me. She was one of those tragic posters who seemed to get all her validation being horrible to strangers on the internet.

That was in 2011, not much has changed

Kissthepastrychef · 09/11/2020 13:40

Although I remember many much more lighthearted stuff and no lighthearted in the titles or ridiculous "trigger warning" nonsense.

ShebaShimmyShake · 09/11/2020 13:51
@MrsPernicious are you trying to kill them. Lockdown is the perfect time to take up a Jew hobby and dogging is far better for the waistline than that dangerous baking.
I've just seen this and I'm sorry, OP, but I'm absolutely cracking up. Oy vey!
