... that Donald Flump will no longer be POTUS??!!

One of the only good things to come from 2020!!

Just to say LOL at those describing Harris as "hard left". On what spectrum exactly?

mathanxiety · 09/11/2020 00:36

I think he did do a lot for the poorer end of society.

LOL.

Like taking away their health insurance?
And their food stamps? (Which are in many states a pittance to begin with).

Immigration isn't the issue in the US. Rampant capitalism and the ever growing gap between the haves and the have nots is. It is growing because of a grossly unfair tax system.

Why is immigration not the problem you think it is?
Because everyone can be fired at will - full time employees have very few rights in the US and part time employees have fewer. Gig workers have none at all.
Because the minimum wage is set by state, and in some states it is so far from being a living wage that people - citizens and immigrants alike - work three jobs just to keep their heads above water. Immigrants do not have an effect on the minimum wage. Yes, there are areas where the going wage is higher than the state minimum, mainly in hot oil producing areas or cities. But the exploited class of workers are not all competing for the same jobs.
Traditional labour unions, especially in construction trades, have done a great job of protecting certain classes of workers (based on ethnicity) and excluding certain others from union jobs and union pay rates (and union health plans and retirement plans).

Thank you all. Yesterday, I drew my first deep breath in FOUR LONG YEARS! He isn't quite gone yet, that will happen when President-Elect is inaugurated in January. January 20, 2021 at 12:01 Eastern Time, precisely (but who's counting? ME, that's who!). Between now and then, the Orange Abomination remains in charge...not that he ever really was. This period of time between the election being called and the Inauguration will be one of the most dangerous times that my poor, battered country has faced since...well...probably the Civil War. And for many of the same reasons. Brother turns on Brother.

HOWEVER...we have now determined that the Light At the End of the Tunnel is not, in fact, an oncoming train. so we can hunker down, lay low, and know that better is coming!

adambooth19 · 09/11/2020 02:30

No not at all! Im absolutely elated for America and the world too that Trump is getting kicked out of office . I'm just disappointed that it won't happen until January. I think we're now in to what they call The Lame Duck Months of Trump's presidency .

I just worry what damage he's going to do in that time. I've heard that in his remaining time in office , Trump could decide to quit as President and leave it to The Vice President Mike Pence to take over in the top job. Then Mike Pence can pardon Donald Trump for all the crimes he committed as President. So much for Trump's anti Hilary slogan "Lock Her Up." It should be Trump who gets locked up.

YY to that. I hope and pray that this thing at the back of everyone's mind won't come to pass.

@WinterIsGone

While it's great to see the back of Trump, he actually got more votes than last time.
I don't think that is out of the ordinary for this particular election as the votes were record breaking in general so people who otherwise would have apathetically supported him from afar actually turned up this time to vote. This was the same on the other side because it was drummed into them how important this election was. This was not the case in 2016 when people wasted their votes on Harambe. Now after 4 years of 🤡 they've stopped laughing.
Ddot · 09/11/2020 04:48

Rivermeadow so if you voted to leave you just can't possible utter or mention anything at all about anything that could possible be of any consequence. Or worry about the good or bad that might emerge from the majorities choice. I personally believe in democracy, I may or may not like all my countrymens choices but I like the fact that we have those choices.

MoonJelly · 09/11/2020 10:22

It's so nice to wake up these last couple of mornings and think "Something good happened ... Trump ...YES!"

winniestone37 · 09/11/2020 11:05

I woke up the day after Biden won feeling like the world was better place 🎉💓👌🏼

lollylimejuice · 09/11/2020 13:25

Jo Biden is a well respected man, he's spent his entire career 'crossing the floor' making contacts with both sides of the house. He will put aside any personal prejudices and deal with the UK in a fair and rational manner. We're lucky he got the job.

@Jeeperscreepers69
Melania is not a lady. She's a gold-digger, who married Trump for money, status and US citizenship. I'm struggling to see any kind of ladyship in her.
She always came across as if the her status was a total inconvenience to her and she couldn't care less about being there for the people, because she married into a golden cage, not into being a First Lady.
I dislike her equally with Trump. Btw, the grapevine is, she will divorce him the moment he's out of the White House and is still with him only because of the settlement.

Ddot · 09/11/2020 14:54

Melania married a billionaire, was it for love or money. Not for all the money in the world, someone said. I could, I'd just close my eyes and think of emeralds 🤣

lollylimejuice · 09/11/2020 14:56

Yes, poor old Trump will have to find himself another nubile young gold digger when Melania jumps ship. My heart breaks 💔.

I read this morning Ivanka was a possible candidate for 2024 though I don't think Trump would move aside for her or anyone else.

grannieali · 09/11/2020 19:44

All the foregoing seems to be material for the upcoming seminar on mumsnet as a forum for feminist politics. Presumably right wing women are on gransnet or don't use this sort of site to vent their opinions. I am 83 and pretty hard left. I use mumsnet because at this advanced age I have acquired a third, infant, grandson.

Linzi2377 · 09/11/2020 19:48

I think if it wasn’t for coronavirus trump would have won a second term..joe Biden seems a real nice man but I feel he will be shunted out soon enough for kamala

LOL, don't look for Ivanka to run. That entire family is hip-deep in legal issues. In four years, Ivanka will be so tainted by her crime family (if not in prison) that she couldn't get elected as dog catcher.

Immigration isn't the issue in the US

I think it was.

I do believe if Covid hadn’t happened then Trump would have won which sort of makes you think that if the only reason Biden won was because of a virus and not his policies

Well putting it that way makes a difference. Immigration isn't a problem in the US. What a charlatan of a politician chooses to do with the topic is a different kettle of fish.

Of course a right wing demagogue is going to encourage ugly nationalism and racism, and stoke hatred. There is nothing new there. It's a well established playbook.

Nobody is denying that Trump won 70 million votes. What that means is that there are 70 million people in the US who are either very, very stupid or morally questionable.

Ddot · 10/11/2020 06:40

What exactly are Biden and trump's polices, all I got from the debate was YOUR BIKES A GIRLS BIKE YOUR BIKE IS 🤣

Ihaveyourback · 10/11/2020 06:50

It is very premature to be elated.

The whole thing needs to be heard in court, and the evidence considered and only then can a real victory be claimed. A media inspired early claim is not the same.

Mr Biden would do well now to hold off pretending this is a done deal, and welcome transparency, and allow the legal processes to be heard. Or he will be seen to be presiding over a dirty election and will lack any kind of creditability with at least half the nation.

Lets hear the case, then we can be sure that the person sitting in the WH come January won the election fairly and squarely.

I say that as Biden supporter.

I think this sort of attitude led to Trump getting in the White House, led to Brexit in the first place. Then people being amazed/shocked that people actually voted that way.

I have listened to a lot of people giving the reasons why they voted for Trump and Brexit and can actually understand, get my head round the reasons why. Where as, especially with this election, a lot of people voting for Biden was purely on the fact he wasn’t Trump.

I do question whether Biden will have what it takes to unite everyone.
He might be a career politician but I don’t see anything to suggest he talks to the blue collar lower paid workers and actually understands them beyond throwing them a few dollars in different shapes or forms but then making it more difficult in the long run to work.
I really can’t see a lot of states that turned Blue are going to take any notice of any directives about wearing a mask, shutting businesses or not meeting up in vast numbers for church etc.
You only have to remember the protests in the street when Trump tried it at the beginning, people shouting that they needed the shops to open to buy hair dye. The individual states have far more power than our local authorities and they do what their people say and only if they agree with the president will they comply.

As I said before, I don’t think either candidate was what the US needs. There needed a 3rd candidate. One who could unite everyone.

We have never seen a recount that made a difference of more than 1500 votes, and President-Elect Biden is leading by far, far more than that in all of the re-count states. This is, indeed, a done deal. Even 1500 votes won't affect an outcome when you are 5,000 votes or more ahead.
Mamanyt · 10/11/2020 08:18

Oh, and Ihaveyourback, many of the actual lawsuits brought by the Trump campaign have been dismissed as "frivolous and without merit" based on a complete lack of viable evidence. His team of lawyers is looking to back out as they feel this is hurting their standing as a serious, responsible company.

Kljnmw3459 · 10/11/2020 08:26

Whatever happens the Republicans will have a hard time holding on to the trump supporters. It will be interesting to if there will be a new party emerging from this.
