I thought this was wind up but sadly it is true. A 73 year old retired nurse has been arrested and put in handcuffs because she took her own mother out of a care home. She has not had proper contact for 9 months and her poor 97 year old mum was ailing, she wanted to bring her home to care for her. Wow just wow how have we come to this.

Vodka I would imagine carers are under massive pressure, family play a bit part in helping in the care. This lady has advanced dementia and her family would spend time helping to feed her, as you know this is a big thing with dementia patients. I would imagine carers to not have the time to feed a resident up to 2 hours. I am not blaming the care home but the Government. What has it come to when you are banned from seeing your family.

You can't just kidnap people, even if you're related to them, without permission.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/11/2020 12:10

@amijustparanoidorjuststoned

I'll be honest, I wouldn't be relying on the D*ily Fail for accurate sources of information.
Apologies, try this one

Where does it say she pushed someone?

It's a safeguarding issue! I have relations with dementia in homes - I wouldn't be allowed to just march in and take them away!
Brighterthansunflowers · 05/11/2020 12:11

YABU

She should be arrested if she assaulted a careworker! They have a right to do their job without being attacked

On the one hand, we want care home residents to be able to have visits from family, but on the other hand the government were quite rightly hauled over the coals for allowing covid to spread like wildfire through care homes in the spring. Obvioudly hospitals discharging positive patients to care homes played a big part in that, I’m not blaming relatives. But surely it’s obviously why care homes are restricting visitors to try and protect residents (other residents as well as those being visited) because all viruses spread easily in care home environments due to close contact and vulnerable residents.

Meadow1203 · 05/11/2020 12:12

Pineapple do you have a parent in a care home with dementia?

OP posts:
WorrierorWarrior · 05/11/2020 12:12

I don't think it was very wise for the care worker to be close enough to a person who is living in the community doing things as normal as any of us can do. The care worker did not observe distancing.

ancientgran · 05/11/2020 12:12

Well if care homes didn't have time to feed residents alot would have died in the last six months of starvation. I haven't heard about that scandal, maybe they were lying about the deaths from covid and they'd all actually died of starvation because their relatives weren't visiting.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/11/2020 12:13

The granddaughter says it - pushed her ever so lightly apparently! Quoted in the DM piece

She pushed this woman out of the way quite lightly to get to my nan so she could hug her. My mum then wheeled my nan around to see me.

OK! You win the internet for today!

yelyah22 · 05/11/2020 12:14

YABU for cherrypicking parts of a story that suit your narrative, ignoring the fact that the police were called to reports of an assault at the care home. She was then let go without charge once they'd investigated.

I am 100% behind the idea that the current care home restrictions are isolating and deeply upsetting, particularly for people with dementia (which I have plenty of experience with, especially in care settings). I'm also deeply wary of an overly policed state. But this story is not that.

purpleme12 · 05/11/2020 12:16

It was quite interesting watching them on This Morning actually
I sympathise with people who can't see the people they love.
But towards the end they seemed to come across as people who were more like, or more towards, conspiracy theorists who didn't really care about the virus at all

unmarkedbythat · 05/11/2020 12:16

Watching a video of an arrest does not mean you know the facts around the incident. This is bad form, trying to incite fury over something without having the full picture.

Coffeeandcocopops · 05/11/2020 12:17

Irrelevant.

Something needs to be done about care home patients not being allowed visitors. It is sad and stressful for all concerned.

Meadow1203 · 05/11/2020 12:17

Chris what a stupid thing to say. She used to visit and spend time helping with her care and at the time no doubt she was in the best place, However she has not been able to be there for the last 9 months and feels she could take better 1 to one care that they are not able to offer. This is not a critism of care homes btw

They're going to be talking about this on politics live on bbc as well so will be interesting to see how this is presented here

What Confused

If you are so in the know you'd also know that care home staff weigh residents at least monthly and calculate their MUST score, they need to inform the GP or refer to SALT if a person's MUST is 2 or higher. Care home staff do have the time to feed residents. My job is to go into care homes and there are only a few residents who come in to assist at mealtimes and that is usually one meal a day.

Not everyone with advanced dementia needs feeding for 2 hours, that is massively rare, especially as it would be exhausting for the person being fed.

Meadow1203 · 05/11/2020 12:21

unmark I have the rage with this story. I have listened to the interview with the Grand daughter and know the facts. Fuck the DM would not believe a word it says. My dad is in a care home many them have tested positive, with no symptoms btw one resident had a fall at the weekend trying to walk to the shops, these people are all ta an advanced stage of Dementia. It is simple these poor old people need their family.

OP posts:
Christmasfairy2020 · 05/11/2020 12:21

Look at it clearer. Why was the lady in a home in the first place if her daughter could care for her?

Its either neglect or she couldn't cope. Keep her in the home and liaise with ss

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/11/2020 12:22

Then you arrange that don’t the proper channels. You don’t just march in and try to take her out.

For one anyone who knows anything about advanced dementia knows how damaging moving settings can be!

I love the newspaper describing the granddaughter as a Corrie star. I watch Corrie didn't have a clue who she was. Turns out she had a small part in a few episodes about 4 years ago. I didn't realise how easy it was to be a star.

Totally not the point but just amused me. Thinking about it it wasn't relevant to the original story either.
