Do you have the tv on in the background all day when you are home ?

I don't and my DH says I'm weird as whenever he gets home he puts the tv straight on.

So I'm at home with our nearly one year old all day. DH says I'm the only mum who doesn't watch daytime tv in the background whilst playing/looking after DD.

I didn't have the TV on with my older DS either, although he had daily some tv time everyday once he could focus on it (so from 18 months onward maybe.) My DS had a speech delay and my DH says it because the house is so quiet due to no TV. I of course I do talk to the kids. I do however look at my phone for texts and MN a bit Hmm, but try not to all the time, so I guess that's the modern reading a book whilst looking after the kids. He could be right that I'm unusual. I suppose I've never thought to have the tv on and only put it on for the kids to watch stuff. I hadn't considered having bargain hunt on whilst playing cars. Maybe I'll try it for lockdown 2, instead of going out and having occasional company.

No, I only put it on to watch a specific programme, and then switch it off afterwards. If I want something in the background, I put a music station on the radio.

DefinitelyPossiblyMaybe · 04/11/2020 22:10

No, I have the radio on.

scentedgeranium · 04/11/2020 22:11

No but I do have the radio on almost constantly. Either podcasts or radio 4. A half hour can pass and I can literally have no idea what's been on!

37weekswithno2 · 04/11/2020 22:11

Our tv is only ever on when we're actually watching something.
Studies say it's actually bad for children's speech to have the tv on all day anyway. I'm sure they know better than your dh. It isn't very kind of him to 'blame' your child's speech delay on you either.

PotteringAlong · 04/11/2020 22:11

No, but I do have the radio on constantly.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 04/11/2020 22:11

Hell no.

No tv before 5pm here.

Mylittlesandwich · 04/11/2020 22:11

I have it on all the time. DS isn't interested in it at the moment. I may feel differently when he is but for now it provides some background noise. I'm often home with just DS and like the nonsense chatter of it.

AcornAutumn · 04/11/2020 22:11

No, I only watch TV seriously and really pay attention.

Music is my background thing.

nanbread · 04/11/2020 22:12

No - when they were tiny babies I might have it on while BFing but generally didn't have it on at all with DC1 and only occasionally with DC2. Did listen to radio a fair bit too.

I really dislike having the TV on in the background, it can be so distracting.

ShellsAndSunrises · 04/11/2020 22:12

No... but I tend to have something on (Usually the radio or music, sometimes the TV) if I’m not concentrating hard on something. Just because I prefer background noise!

MuchTooTired · 04/11/2020 22:12

My DH is the same as yours, and I’m the same as you! Drives me absolutely mad having the tv on all the time - the kids are noisy enough without having the unwatched tv blabbering on all the time as well. Lockdown 2 with the tv on all the time would drive me absolutely bonkers.

DH and I play two games in this house. One is him switching the thermostat on, and my switching it off, the other is the telly!

Usernamenumber999 · 04/11/2020 22:12

Yes I have the tv on most of the time. I was just thinking today actually that I was brought up in a tv house and Im now creating my own tv house.

unicornparty · 04/11/2020 22:12

Mine is on in the background all day, even when I'm working.

newtothenet · 04/11/2020 22:12

Same here. Radio on most of the day as background noise. TV is on in the evenings for specific programmes after the kids are in bed and the chores are done, or at a weekend to watch a family film. That's how I was brought up and I never considered changing it (although I do remember being envious of my friends who got to watch The Big Breakfast before school!)

MummaBear4321 · 04/11/2020 22:12

I purposely turn the tv off or turn to a radio channel after about 9am. It goes back on to cbeebies for DD when I am making dinner. I never grew up with tv on all day. Whereas DHs tv was never off while he was growing up, and I notice my MIL does the same with DD. She automatically sticks her in front of an ipad (DD is just turning 2). I think it's just how you grow up and what you are used to. For me, tv was a treat, not an all day thing.

LST · 04/11/2020 22:13

My TV is on from 7 in the morning until we go to bed. It wasn't when the kids were home. But I like it on low whilst I work now they've gone back to school

DarkDarkNight · 04/11/2020 22:13

Tv or music, I like a bit of background noise.

1Morewineplease · 04/11/2020 22:13

Yes I do have the tv on but sometimes I have the radio on.
I need background sounds else my tinnitus gets the better of me.

MerchantOfVenom · 04/11/2020 22:13

No, I have the radio on most of the time, though (news).

Absolute LOL at the idea that TV will help with emerging speech development.

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/11/2020 22:13

No tv on till DD’s in bed (unless a major world event is going on but she doesn’t watch tv so doesn’t pay attention if it’s on) but I listen to the radio or Spotify quite a bit. Day time tv is shit.

BackforGood · 04/11/2020 22:14

No. I turn the TV on when I sit down to watch something.

There's research that suggests a lot of dc who struggle to concentrate at school, is linked to the fact they are used to flickering screens all day, and they struggle to focus without that stimulus.

Much better to sit and watch TV when it is your 'TV time', than have it on all the time.

user1487194234 · 04/11/2020 22:14

No
I only put the television on if I am sitting down to specifically watch something

Macncheeseballs · 04/11/2020 22:15

No way, I hate screens on unless I am watching, hate screens in pubs too

WildHorsesRunInMe · 04/11/2020 22:15

I personally like a bit of background noise so will usually have music or the TV on in the background. I don't think you are weird or unusual for not doing that though.

Mischance · 04/11/2020 22:15

Gosh - why would you want TV on all day? It would do my head in. I put specific programmes on, but mostly in the evening. And I have the radio on all day because I live alone and it is company.

I cannot imagine why your OH might think you should have it on - your children will have their brains fried if it is on all day. Better to be enjoying their company, going out with them, playing with them and letting them play by themselves without the mind- numbing TV on in the background all the time.

You stick to your guns.
