Do you have the tv on in the background all day when you are home ?

I don't and my DH says I'm weird as whenever he gets home he puts the tv straight on.

So I'm at home with our nearly one year old all day. DH says I'm the only mum who doesn't watch daytime tv in the background whilst playing/looking after DD.

I didn't have the TV on with my older DS either, although he had daily some tv time everyday once he could focus on it (so from 18 months onward maybe.) My DS had a speech delay and my DH says it because the house is so quiet due to no TV. I of course I do talk to the kids. I do however look at my phone for texts and MN a bit Hmm, but try not to all the time, so I guess that's the modern reading a book whilst looking after the kids. He could be right that I'm unusual. I suppose I've never thought to have the tv on and only put it on for the kids to watch stuff. I hadn't considered having bargain hunt on whilst playing cars. Maybe I'll try it for lockdown 2, instead of going out and having occasional company.
Your baby needs your attention. If you haven’t watched it already, please watch Still face. All parents should watch it.
Utter bollocks. You're assuming TV makes someone completely unresponsive.
Winterterrace · 04/11/2020 23:34

It’s harder for a baby to pick out one sound from another and hear the individual sounds that make up words with constant background noise (theory), it actually reduces the frequency of the adult speaking to the child (studies not my opinion), even if the toddler doesn’t appear to be paying any attention to the tv it does impact their ability to learn and retain new words (study, not my opinion.)

It’s not about watching a specific programme or then watching a children’s show, it’s about tv being left on as background.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/11/2020 23:35

I like the radio/ music for background noise.
TV is distracting and I only put it on when I want to watch something.

My friend likes TV in the background and I hate it as I lose focus and get mesmerised by watching crap because it's there rather than focusing on conversation.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 04/11/2020 23:41

No, I only ever knew one person who did this. She said to me she felt reassured by it being on all day, because her parents did the same when she was growing up. I used to have my radio on from morning til night for company before I moved in with my now DH.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 04/11/2020 23:43

Wow. I didnt realise adults did this. I know of some parents who put cbeebies on a lot.

Ive occasionally binge watched a series but not all day. And Im wiped! I genuinely can't imagine doing that all day everyday.

BashfulClam · 04/11/2020 23:45

No but it’s the first thing DH turns on. I can go all day without but. My mum was the same, tv was always on.

NeedWineNow · 04/11/2020 23:46

No we're both WFH and we have either Scala Radio or Absolute Classic Rock on during the day. TV on at lunch, and then again when we finish around 5.30/6.

MrsMarrio · 04/11/2020 23:47

I don't, my husband always has the tv on, and when he comes in and sees the tv off he always asks 'why is the telly off'. My 4mo loves music so when he's playing on his mat I will put the music channels on but only because there is any radio in the living room

Anchoredowninanchorage · 04/11/2020 23:48

No , radio 4 or weird Spotify podcasts usually. Columbo on Sunday whilst ironing 😊

Bouledeneige · 04/11/2020 23:49

No not at all. My DC are grown up now but I find having the TV during the day very depressing. I took my kids out to the shops, parks and for walks, had meals, got creative and cooked with them, invited people round, pottered in the garden. TV was only at the end of the day after tea before bath and bed. Unless they were ill.

My DC are now at uni but I never have the TV on before 7pm on any day of the week. Its just sad to me. Its on all evening after I've eaten.

Addicted2LoveIsland · 04/11/2020 23:55

Always pop the TV on as soon as I walk in. I've always been like this. Obvs turn it down if phone rings or whatever but it is always on.

ViciousJackdaw · 04/11/2020 23:56

I don't and my DH says I'm weird as whenever he gets home he puts the tv straight on

Mine is exactly the same. I can't abide pointless telly blaring out for no good reason but I'll admit that I do have music or the radio on constantly. Also, if there's a big news story occurring then I will usually have BBC News/Sky/Sky Sports News on all day. I don't put it on just for the sake of it though.

Winterterrace · 04/11/2020 23:59

Do people still watch things ‘when they’re on?’ Apart from live sport I never watch tv programmes when they’re actually scheduled to be on anymore.

CovidAnni · 05/11/2020 00:02

@MerchantOfVenom

No, I have the radio on most of the time, though (news).

Absolute LOL at the idea that TV will help with emerging speech development.

This! Google ‘child development tv’ it’s pretty conclusive.
throwaway10000 · 05/11/2020 00:03

Not necessarily the tv but I like background noise - whether that’s music, a podcast or random Netflix

throwaway10000 · 05/11/2020 00:03

Or even YouTube videos

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 05/11/2020 00:08

I’m with your DH, I have constant background noise. Sometimes radio but mainly rewatching tv shows.

happymummy12345 · 05/11/2020 00:09

No I hate anything like that. Telly is only ever on when it's being watched. Never listen to the radio, and music is only ever on when I went to listen to it

squeekums · 05/11/2020 00:17

weird for me
ive always had tv as background noise

Titsywoo · 05/11/2020 00:36

No never. It's a very rare occurence that I watch TV during the day (maybe xmas or when I'm ill) and I quite like silence although I do listen to music when cleaning.

diamond4u · 05/11/2020 00:49

How old are all the people that are saying no? What do you all listen to radios on?
Our tv is on all day from the moment we awake to when we go bed. Regardless of actually watching it. Rare times when it's turned off, dh does ask why it's off. Even when I am not actually watching it and need quiet, I keep it on mute as oppose to turning it off. I actually feel
Less
Scared when am home alone with the tv on.
I think I like the idea of hearing the tv sound whilst am doing other stuff around the house,

During lockdown however, the tv was off during part of the day, as the kids were very loud and the last thing I needed was the tv sound also.

CounsellorTroi · 05/11/2020 00:57

No it only goes on when we want to watch something. Will have the radio on if I'm cooking.

avamiah · 05/11/2020 00:59

diamond4u,
Same here .
I’m up at 7 am for school and the Tv and radio ( LBC) goes on and they are both on till I switch off and lock up at Bed Time .
My elderly mum lives with us and she loves watching her tv shows as she calls them and listening to the radio when she is in the kitchen .

ViciousJackdaw · 05/11/2020 01:05

How old are all the people that are saying no? What do you all listen to radios on?

I'm 44 and I listen to radio broadcasts on.....

wait for it...

a radio!

LarryUnderwood · 05/11/2020 01:17

Nope, our TV is only on when we are watching something. We also don't have tv in bedrooms. I've never understood the concept of TV as background noise - its a visual medium!
