Do you have the tv on in the background all day when you are home ?

I don't and my DH says I'm weird as whenever he gets home he puts the tv straight on.

So I'm at home with our nearly one year old all day. DH says I'm the only mum who doesn't watch daytime tv in the background whilst playing/looking after DD.

I didn't have the TV on with my older DS either, although he had daily some tv time everyday once he could focus on it (so from 18 months onward maybe.) My DS had a speech delay and my DH says it because the house is so quiet due to no TV. I of course I do talk to the kids. I do however look at my phone for texts and MN a bit Hmm, but try not to all the time, so I guess that's the modern reading a book whilst looking after the kids. He could be right that I'm unusual. I suppose I've never thought to have the tv on and only put it on for the kids to watch stuff. I hadn't considered having bargain hunt on whilst playing cars. Maybe I'll try it for lockdown 2, instead of going out and having occasional company.

No.

I have Radio 4 on mostly and occasionally, the World service.

FixItUpChappie · 04/11/2020 22:29

Yes, I love having it on 24/7 tbh

TurquoiseDragon · 04/11/2020 22:30

I have the radio on, usually Planet Rock. TV comes on in the evening.

Cocolapew · 04/11/2020 22:30

No I can't bear it, I do listen to Magic Soul all day though.

FixItUpChappie · 04/11/2020 22:30

I will add I never have it on when the kids are home, but when by myself - I love having the background noise

Emmacb82 · 04/11/2020 22:31

I always have the tv on as background, or music channel. I found when my ds was younger that he wasn’t that bothered in the telly because it was always on. He never asked to watch it and still doesn’t now much.

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 04/11/2020 22:31

No, never did. I like silence these days, used to have music on but barely do now.

Fortunately DP is the same.

Divebar · 04/11/2020 22:31

Pre Covid I used to come home from work and find the TV blaring while everyone was upstairs. I can’t stand it. If you have it on you’re going to get sucked into watching shite. I play music everyday but I don’t like the radio on all the time either - I’m happy with silence in the house.

Gillian1980 · 04/11/2020 22:33

No..... loud enough with the kids at home without having the tv on too. We put it on if we want to watch something.

Meadowland · 04/11/2020 22:34

I think @BackforGood is right.
Lots of research now saying overexposure to screens causes poor concentration and also poor sleep in children.

CSIblonde · 04/11/2020 22:34

Yes. But doesnt mean I watch it. I can be studying, reading, online shopping ,watching a You Tube crime documentary, cleaning, etc. I think it's just better than silence. Music often makes me randomly teary so I don't put the radio on.

hiredandsqueak · 04/11/2020 22:34

No I only put the Tv on when I plan to watch something. I like silence so if I'm alone there is no background noise.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 04/11/2020 22:35

No, never!
Radio 4 in the week and 6 at weekends on in the kitchen
Music in the evenings or telly after @ 9

JoeBidenIsGreat · 04/11/2020 22:37

Constant chatty radio very rarely any TV.

My dad has tv on all the time. His life revolves around TV, I dare say.

earthyfire · 04/11/2020 22:38

No, but my husband is the same as soon as he enters the house he has to put the TV on. It's like an addiction.

copperoliver · 04/11/2020 22:38

Yes. X

Spied · 04/11/2020 22:39

I put the TV on as soon as we get up on a morning and it's on all day. I even leave it on if I'm out ( for company for ddog).
Occasionally I'll switch it off and sit in silence for half an hour before the school run on an afternoon but this tends to be if I'm feeling particularly stressed/anxious and need a kind of time out to think and gather my thoughts.
I can not stand the radio or listening to music.

ManchNic · 04/11/2020 22:39

I never have the tv on as background noise, only if we actually want to watch something. Just wanted to add too, I'm a speech and language therapist and can categorically tell you that the tv (or any screen) does not help your child's speech and language development. I'm a massive fan of the odd bit of tv when you need to get stuff done etc, but background tv is far more a contribution to speech/language issues than a preventor of them 😊

NoMoreFlowers · 04/11/2020 22:41

No, I prefer silence

MoonJelly · 04/11/2020 22:44

DH says I'm the only mum who doesn't watch daytime tv in the background whilst playing/looking after DD.

What exactly is his source of information? Has he canvassed every other mother? If so, he missed me out. I only have the TV on if there's something either I or the children want to watch.

I do need something on if I'm doing something manual like ironing, cleaning or cooking, but for cleaning and cooking at least it's much more likely to be the radio or a podcast.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 04/11/2020 22:44

No, I rarely put the TV on during the day when I'm off work, unless DS is having an extra long nap and I actually get time to sit down for a bit, but that's to catch up on something I'm watching. We do quite often have the radio on in the kitchen, R4 mostly but also radio X

LucillevsLowkee · 04/11/2020 22:45

Hell no.

I spent a fortune moving to a relatively quiet area, it's not to drown the peace and quiet with constant noise for the sake of it. There's enough noise with the kids as it is.

Sometimes I have music, sometimes not. I have completely stopped the radio, it's mainly adverts nowadays, it's unbearable.

TV is only switched on when someone is watching it. I feel so sorry for people with close neighbours who have to put up with background noise all day long.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 04/11/2020 22:45

No way, what on earth is worth watching on tv in the daytime? It rarely goes on in our house until 7 or 8 pm

Toontown · 04/11/2020 22:45

No. And definitely didn't when had babies and toddlers. Not good for concentration and play.

timeisnotaline · 04/11/2020 22:46

Ugh no, tv is only ever on for specific reasons. I’d be seriously unhappy with dh putting it on as background noise, I don’t think it’s good for babies’ development at all. It’s nothing like people talking to them as a development influence, and dick move by your dh to try and blame your parenting.
