Do you have the tv on in the background all day when you are home ?

I don't and my DH says I'm weird as whenever he gets home he puts the tv straight on.

So I'm at home with our nearly one year old all day. DH says I'm the only mum who doesn't watch daytime tv in the background whilst playing/looking after DD.

I didn't have the TV on with my older DS either, although he had daily some tv time everyday once he could focus on it (so from 18 months onward maybe.) My DS had a speech delay and my DH says it because the house is so quiet due to no TV. I of course I do talk to the kids. I do however look at my phone for texts and MN a bit Hmm, but try not to all the time, so I guess that's the modern reading a book whilst looking after the kids. He could be right that I'm unusual. I suppose I've never thought to have the tv on and only put it on for the kids to watch stuff. I hadn't considered having bargain hunt on whilst playing cars. Maybe I'll try it for lockdown 2, instead of going out and having occasional company.

No. I have it off all day.

DH switches it on as soon as he gets home. Drives me crazy.

He even puts it on then goes out of the room. I either switch it off or mute it when he does this.

Love peace and quiet.

SunshineLollipopsRainbow · 05/11/2020 01:36

No TV but I have nursery rhymes in Alexa for bits at a time,.not all day though.

ChristmasArmadillo · 05/11/2020 01:44

No. Not until the DC are in bed we might turn it on. I have music playing a lot of the time though.

grassisjeweled · 05/11/2020 01:48

Not really.

Whilst wfh I put the Netflix fire on for 'background'

chatwoo · 05/11/2020 02:05

No TV on during WFH - I enjoy the silence! Or sometimes music, but have to be in the right mood.

Can't bear it when TV is left on, despite nobody watching it. Happy to leave the news blaring out if I'm putting away dishes, clothes, whatever in the background, but apart from that, only on if actually watching it.

MrsAvocet · 05/11/2020 02:07

I only put the television on if I am going to sit down and actually watch something, which isn't that often to be honest. I always listen to the radio whilst I'm doing housework though.
When my Dad was alone for a lot of the day after Mum died he used to have the TV on because he enjoyed hearing human voices, even if he wasn't really watching, so I can understand why people who live alone like to have it on. I'm the opposite as our house is usually busy and on the rare occasions that I am at home alone I enjoy the silence, or the chance to put my choice of music on!

37weekswithno2 · 05/11/2020 02:39

How old are all the people that are saying no? What do you all listen to radios on?

I'm 33. I don't have the radio on either. Don't feel the need for background noise. During the day I'm either busy doing something or I'll play with or chat to Ds

hetanom · 05/11/2020 02:41

How old are all the people that are saying no?

I'm 32 and I never even knew this was a thing people do. I can't understand why anyone would really. Sounds annoying. Any TV in the background seems pointless but daytime TV is awful anyway!

hetanom · 05/11/2020 02:42

I've never even been to a friends house and found the TV on. Or do background TV people turn it off when they know their friends are coming over?

Sciencebabe · 05/11/2020 03:02

No TV. Over-stimulation can have a negative effect as well. Your son's speech delay could be from one of a hundred reasons - but not from lack of TV! 🤣🤣🤣

Neither of mine paid interest before 2yrs old (now 5.5 and 2.5 yrs). We don't pay TV licence, so if they want to watch something it has to be a dvd or Netflix thing and to watch it purposefully. No adverts, what a waste of life!

Once dinner is on the table the TV turns off and doesn't turn on again. They have enough reading or toys to play with.

Zoflorabore · 05/11/2020 03:19

God no. I hate it. My 17yr old ds commented on this recently and said it’s “depressing” which is obviously over dramatic. I love having music on, usually 80’s stuff on YouTube on my phone or iPad.

He has his TV on all the time in his room which is his choice.

Dp has been pretty much furloughed since March and has the bloody thing on all day in the background. He’s back to work next week and I’m so excited for the quietness to resume!

fairydustandpixies · 05/11/2020 03:36

Nope. I can't cope with background noise, drives me insane!

Temporarything · 05/11/2020 03:36

I like the quiet so TV never on unless I’m watching.

Sometimes have radio on. I like R4.

tmh88 · 05/11/2020 03:39

I have tv on for background noise.. usually a music channel, sometimes I just put music on the Alexa but I have to have background noise as I don’t like silence!

happymummy12345 · 05/11/2020 04:06

@ViciousJackdaw I'm 27 and can't stand any background noise. Don't see the need at all. And I don't listen to the radio.
I have a combined iPod, cd and radio but it's hardly used as I rarely listen to music

freddosfrogs · 05/11/2020 04:15

No, I prefer peace and quiet

BoomBoomsCousin · 05/11/2020 05:26

No. I find it really annoying.

violetbunny · 05/11/2020 05:41

That would drive me batshit crazy. I do empathise though as DP always wants TV or music on, whereas I mostly prefer quiet.

DeadGood · 05/11/2020 05:45

Ugh. Terrible to have the TV droning on all day. Your husband is so wrong.

scrivette · 05/11/2020 05:49

No, I love the silence (which doesn't happen often) and the DC are noisy enough without tv on too.

It also means that when the DC sit down to watch tv it's an 'event' and I get some peace to Mumsnet cook dinner.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/11/2020 05:51

I have it on a lot. CNN on atm watching the results.

Caeruleanblue · 05/11/2020 05:51

No - and now radio 4 is trying to attract a younger audience I sometimes have silence.

antwacky · 05/11/2020 06:26

Only ever have the telly on if I'm watching something and rarely have it on through the day. When my kids were young they would switch it on as soon as they got up at the weekend for childrens TV. My sil once described someone as weird and their house as one of the homes with no atmosphere because they never had the telly on during the day Hmm

TheProvincialLady · 05/11/2020 06:29

If hearing Bargain Hunt or whatever daytime shite is on these days is so important for speech development, how did children learn to speak before the invention of the tv? Your husband is a bit dim.

whatswithtodaytoday · 05/11/2020 06:33

No, I like silence. I put Cbeebies on to distract him while I get something done, and sometimes after nursery if he's hyper. Otherwise, no TV... daytime TV is the worst.

I did have it on a lot when he was tiny (like under three months) and I watched a lot of Say Yes to the Dress 😁 but one day my brain suddenly seemed to engage and I couldn't stand it again.
