Do you have the tv on in the background all day when you are home ?

I don't and my DH says I'm weird as whenever he gets home he puts the tv straight on.

So I'm at home with our nearly one year old all day. DH says I'm the only mum who doesn't watch daytime tv in the background whilst playing/looking after DD.

I didn't have the TV on with my older DS either, although he had daily some tv time everyday once he could focus on it (so from 18 months onward maybe.) My DS had a speech delay and my DH says it because the house is so quiet due to no TV. I of course I do talk to the kids. I do however look at my phone for texts and MN a bit Hmm, but try not to all the time, so I guess that's the modern reading a book whilst looking after the kids. He could be right that I'm unusual. I suppose I've never thought to have the tv on and only put it on for the kids to watch stuff. I hadn't considered having bargain hunt on whilst playing cars. Maybe I'll try it for lockdown 2, instead of going out and having occasional company.

I would prefer to have tv on or speech radio rather than music.

Thatwentbadly · 04/11/2020 22:17

No I don’t have the Tv on during the day. I do have the radio on.

CoRhona · 04/11/2020 22:17

God no. There are five people in our house so I love the peace and quiet when I can get it Grin

ineedanotherholiday · 04/11/2020 22:18

Weirdly I was thinking about this today.

In the same as you OP I don't have the tv on and at home most of the day alone with baby. I put it on a bit for ds or if I'm
Watching something quickly whilst feeding but then it goes back off,
I rarely watch a full
Programme all the way through either.

Feellikefrighteningyeah · 04/11/2020 22:18

No because DH is WFH (bloody annoying )

VestaTilley · 04/11/2020 22:20

No, I didn’t have the tv on much when DS was a baby at all, and I don’t just have it on for background when I or we are at home.

However, I also don’t sit on my phone when he’s with me- I don’t think it is the equivalent of reading a book. That may be ok with an older child, but I think with a younger child you need to be talking to them, playing with them and engaging with them. A one year old can’t really sit and play alone for very long.

DarkMintChocolate · 04/11/2020 22:20

No, I don’t. I put the television on, only if I want to watch something specific. I only watched Neighbours in the daytime when my children were growing up.

One of my children had a language disorder and the speech therapist told me not to have the tv or radio on, as my daughter could not make out what I was saying from the background noise of the television - so she could not learn the language. I have spent years, listening to speech therapists, and sat on consultations with Afasic, ICAN and The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists - I have never met any professional, who agrees with your husband!

woodhill · 04/11/2020 22:21

No, only if I want to watch something. DH likes in on constantly

Onedropbeat · 04/11/2020 22:22

I don’t sit in silence

I like listening to music or radio when I’m in the house

I might give podcasts a go

Daytime tv is pants and mostly depressing

comingintomyown · 04/11/2020 22:22

Wallpaper tv , not for me. I only put it on to watch something specific

MLMbotsgoaway · 04/11/2020 22:22

No as I work from home (always have tbis isn’t covid related). That said I’ve never been someone who can work with the radio on.

As a kid we always had the tv on though.

PattyPan · 04/11/2020 22:23

No Hmm sounds like a waste of electricity if you aren’t actually watching it tbh

Ethelfleda · 04/11/2020 22:23

No! I think it’s weird to have the TV on all day!
Sometimes I listen to music but most of the time I like silence (when home alone)

Dixiechickonhols · 04/11/2020 22:23

No and I personally dislike it. I do have radio on sometimes. I think it’s supposed to be better for babies language develop not to have constant background tv.

RecoveringChocaholic · 04/11/2020 22:23

My DH does it. Drives me mad. He'll leave it on downstairs while he goes up for a shower or out into the garden. It's a major bugbear of mine. I just don't get it. I did grow up in a TV free home so maybe that had an impact. He even turns it on specifically when we have friends round because apparently it's not normal to not have the TV on. I find it just plain rude.

Excited101 · 04/11/2020 22:24

Yes I do tend to but I live on my own. If I had children there’s no way I would.

MrsJBaptiste · 04/11/2020 22:24

No, I don't put it on until 8pm at the earliest. It feels lazy to have the tv on earlier than that 🤷‍♀️

I do have the radio on from 6am onwards though!

AgeLikeWine · 04/11/2020 22:24

Yes.

I WFH and I usually have BBC or Sky news on all day, with the sound turned down. If there is some Interesting sport on, I will put that on, or listen to R4. I don’t usually have pop music radio on because it irritates me.

AmandaHoldensLips · 04/11/2020 22:24

OMG. I never have the TV on during the day - have always worked from home. Then DH starts WFH since sodding March and always puts the tv on - morning noon and effing night. Totally did my head in.

In the grand scale of things he's a good bloke so I decided it's not like it's a deal breaker so I put a brave face on and now I'm used to it and can zone it out.

But bloody hell. Bargain hunt? Nick twatting Knowles bleating on about crims while wearing I-love-my-fashion clothes and making my teeth itch. Mind you - tipping point, eh?

blue25 · 04/11/2020 22:26

No, I hate having the TV on all day. I sometimes have music or the radio on. However, I love silence.

LJC1234 · 04/11/2020 22:26

No but my DH is exactly like yours and it drives me insane he wants it on always.! His parents are the same TV always always on even if we sit down for a lovely family meal. Sometimes they will mute the sound if I'm lucky

Autumnblooms · 04/11/2020 22:27

No with a capital N! It actually irritates me the tv on with no one watching it- I switch it straight off- hate tv background noise- don’t actually like the tv much either really!

dazzlinghaze · 04/11/2020 22:28

I only put the tv on if I'm going to watch something but I do like background noise so I always have a podcast or YouTube videos running. I live alone and miss the noise of living with others so I use them to replicate the chatter you get when you live with people.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 04/11/2020 22:28

Radio 4 is the soundtrack to my life - via headphones in the office, through the day home, and through the night (although it switched over to World Service) if I can't sleep...
If I'm in (so lots at the moment) I'll watch TV or Iplayer for a bit in the evening.
