Do you have the tv on in the background all day when you are home ?

I don't and my DH says I'm weird as whenever he gets home he puts the tv straight on.

So I'm at home with our nearly one year old all day. DH says I'm the only mum who doesn't watch daytime tv in the background whilst playing/looking after DD.

I didn't have the TV on with my older DS either, although he had daily some tv time everyday once he could focus on it (so from 18 months onward maybe.) My DS had a speech delay and my DH says it because the house is so quiet due to no TV. I of course I do talk to the kids. I do however look at my phone for texts and MN a bit Hmm, but try not to all the time, so I guess that's the modern reading a book whilst looking after the kids. He could be right that I'm unusual. I suppose I've never thought to have the tv on and only put it on for the kids to watch stuff. I hadn't considered having bargain hunt on whilst playing cars. Maybe I'll try it for lockdown 2, instead of going out and having occasional company.

No. Day time TV is dross. It won’t magically aid speech development by playing in the background, either. He is mad.

Stripesnomore · 04/11/2020 22:49

We don’t usually have anything on for background noise, neither do my parents.

lovepickledlimes · 04/11/2020 22:50

Yes I do if on my own. Precovid this was a lot as I work from home and fiancé worked in an office. He is the opposite. I need the background noise as I am not keen on music all day but complete silence drives me up the wall when all I can fixate on is the clock ticking, or one of the pets eating/playing/licking which are noises I find highly irritating

Immaback · 04/11/2020 22:52

Nope. No tv until after 6 here. But my kids are 1 and 4 so it’s not that hard to do 😂

JellyfishandShells · 04/11/2020 22:54

No - only put it on to watch something specific and then off. Like to have the radio, or an audio book on, when I’m cooking or working, though.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 04/11/2020 22:54

No, only put it on to watch a program and hate visiting homes where there is the "constant background noise" thing. I enjoy listening to music or watching occasional tv but I also enjoy peace/silence.

Ragwort · 04/11/2020 22:56

No, I love peace and quiet, I would never put the radio or any sort of music on unless I especially wanted to listen to something which is very rare. I like to watch the news and one tv programme per night, I actually wish I enjoyed the tv / radio a bit more as I am now back on furlough from tomorrow and it would at least help to pass the time if I could watch a bit more tv but I am conditioned into thinking daytime tv is not quite the done thing Grin. I guess it's what you are used to - my own parents are late 80s and wouldn't dream of putting the tv on before about 8pm Grin unless it's Wimbledon !

missnevermind · 04/11/2020 22:56

No. No way. Can't stand daytime TV. TV goes on in the evening if there is something to watch. DH walks into the room puts the telly on because it's too quiet and then walks out again. Drives me mad. He will sit and flick thru the channels complaining nothing to watch but will not switch it off.

Ltdannygreen · 04/11/2020 22:57

Sometimes, depends what I’m doing. Sometimes I’ll put on Alexa.

hitchhikingghost · 04/11/2020 23:03

Your baby needs your attention. If you haven’t watched it already, please watch Still face. All parents should watch it.

Tea3 · 04/11/2020 23:04

TV on all day would drive me mad! Not good for young childrens concentration.

Mochudubh · 04/11/2020 23:05

I don't because if I do I'll get sucked into Homes under the Hammer or Doctors, or other such shite.

If I'm home alone, I'll put music on the stereo but if DH is in (he works shifts and I'm currently WFH) I'll put headphones on at my laptop as he watches war documentaries and stuff about cars that make me want to throw things at the telly.

Shmithecat2 · 04/11/2020 23:06

I have the tv in most of the day in the sitting room, and the radio on all day in the kitchen. I like the background noise. Ds isn't massively interested in the TV, he watches what he wants on his tablet.

2pinkginsplease · 04/11/2020 23:07

No our TV is rarely on!

IndieTara · 04/11/2020 23:07

I have the radio on

MayFayre · 04/11/2020 23:10

No. I hate background noise, whether from tv, radio or music.

Your husband is completely wrong if he thinks your child’s speech is related to not having tv on.

But yabu to think that reading MN or texting is the same as reading a book. Reading books in front of your child encourages reading and is better for you than a phone.

foilflower · 04/11/2020 23:19

No, I like silence.

Winterterrace · 04/11/2020 23:19

’My DS had a speech delay and my DH says it because the house is so quiet due to no TV’

I think there are plenty of studies showing the opposite. Having the TV on constantly in the background can harm speech development in babies and toddlers.

Onedropbeat · 04/11/2020 23:20

How can background noise harm spearheaded development?

Nannyamc · 04/11/2020 23:24

No. If something is happening radio is on
TV after 6

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/11/2020 23:27

I am working at the kitchen table and have BBC6 on in there. Even when we went to work we had the radio on all day for the cat! I tend to have the TV on in the evening but am not actively watching, just dipping in and out. I think that’s a hangover from when I lived alone.

PickAChew · 04/11/2020 23:30

Hell No. It's all shit, during the day. If I want noise, I'll put the radio (mostly 6 music or R3) or a CD on.

SRS29 · 04/11/2020 23:31

No...currently WFH so either radio or team meetings....prior to working radio all day then TV post 6pm to catch the news etc.
