President-Elect 🙏🏻 Please God!! Biden has already announced the US will rejoin the Paris Accord in 77 days.
Also there’s no possibility at all of him allowing the Good Friday Agreement to be fucked around with. More great news.

He’s not even in yet and things are getting better

Elsewyre · 05/11/2020 04:35

@AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal

Trump will take the result to the Supreme Court and try to get the result overturned

How though? I don't get why they wouldn't laugh him out of town, surely if it's a clear win ... it's a clear win???

Because laws written hundreds of years ago don't necessarily reflect the reality of modern life.

There isnt a clear law on postal/delayed ballots /the insane amount of gerrymandering etc done by the Republicans to reduce the populations ability to vote.

Elsewyre · 05/11/2020 04:38
**@sergeilavrov* & @cdtaylornats* Sorry if this is a silly question, but are you saying that in all but 29 states, the Elector could (in theory) ignore the public vote, and vote for their own choice as President?
Yes, it's a hold over from when they vote was taken and the elector then heads off to Washington potentially taking weeks/months to make the journey. In that time things could change dramatically and the elector needed the option to change the vote to reflect the new information.

freddosfrogs · 05/11/2020 04:42

@MagicSummer

Why do you all want Biden? He is a terminal duffer. Mark my words, if he wins, you will wish Trump was back in 3 months.
I no sooner hope for that than I'd hope for the ravenous bugblatter beast of traal for president.
mathanxiety · 05/11/2020 04:47

Trump will take the result to the Supreme Court and try to get the result overturned

I think this is mainly a stunt that would have the effect of encouraging his rabid followers to believe that the election was stolen, should he lose. Trump has been flirting with incitement of violence all through this campaign.

mathanxiety · 05/11/2020 04:49

There really are two Americas..

DulciUke · 05/11/2020 05:11

Biden certainly has more options regarding getting to 270, but it is a very tight race in all of the remaining states. There's the assumption that the mail in votes in most areas lean towards the Democrats, but that doesn't mean that they will make up the deficits in Georgia or Pennsylvania. In other words, the Democrats can't get cocky at this point.

AlternativePerspective · 05/11/2020 05:19

Some of the political commentators seem to think that Trump actually will be able to get the result overturned. As ludicrous as that sounds.

Even if Biden gets the 270 votes I don’t think this is over by a long way. Either way this will go down in history because there is going to be civil unrest regardless of the outcome.

Nikori · 05/11/2020 05:26

I can't believe that Biden is the best that the Dems can find to put up, after the 2016 debacle with Clinton they should have really found someone more suitable. It's been like a penalty shoot out with no goalie and they still managed to almost miss!

I think Biden was a smart choice. He appeals to the middle ground. People who either love Trump or hate Trump are unlikely to change their vote, but Joe Biden has done very well in the suburbs.

@user1471565182

Where the piss have those famous checks and balances been today and the last 4 years by the way?
Unfortunately, checks and balances only really exist when the other branches are not compromised. I think one could argue that with the republican held senate, their primary loyalty has been to Trump, rather than to the country or their constituents. For example, when Romney was the only GOP senator to vote to impeach Trump, it was seen as groundbreaking, when in reality he simply listened to the facts (which were pretty indisputable) and voted with his conscience. The Supreme Court is up in the air right now. So far on election issues, John Roberts (who is a conservative justice) has been very fair in sticking to the rule of the law and states' rights, whereas the other conservative and liberal justices have been sticking with party. Amy Coney Barrett hasn't voted in those, though, and if she doesn't recuse herself for any potential presidential dispute, even John Roberts can't stand in the way because of the 6-3 majority.

I don't believe that Pennsylvania will get to this point, but as others have said, there is a possibility that the governor (D) and state legislature (R) could try to seat rival electors. This would be unprecedented if it were to happen, and would be very bad. Hopefully both parties will respect the popular vote in the state and elect accordingly. It is pretty extraordinary, though, that this isn't more clearly laid out.

JoeBidenIsGreat · 05/11/2020 07:46

I can't believe how wonderful it is to hear what Biden has been saying in last 24 hours. So measured, careful, kind, trying to unite everyone. Such an amazing breath of fresh air.

My ex-colleague worked with Biden and (like 5 yrs ago), often said what a solid nice man Biden is.

I will (of course) be relieved if Biden wins but still disappointed that so many Americans actually wanted Trump to stay in power. a 2nd term of Trump craziness & corruption would make first term look like a lazy warm up. Even in USA it's normal to accept most initiatives that previous administrations did. No one tried to de-integrate the armed forces or get rid of social security. But Trump has systematically dismantled everything Obama did & started on undoing Clinton & Bush achievements. Obsessed or what.

The race in Arizona appears to have tightened. 538 and ABC had it as likely Biden but they now say it is a toss up. Fox and AP definitely called this one far too early.

So, we still wait for results in Alaska (almost certainly Trump), Arizona (very close but Biden still slightly favourite), Georgia (also very close but Biden slightly favourite), Nevada (likely Biden), North Carolina (likely Trump) and Pennsylvania (still very close but looking increasingly likely to go for Biden).

Meanwhile, there is almost certainly going to be a recount in Wisconsin and possibly also Michigan, and, of course, Trump is trying to stop the count in states where he is ahead, thereby disenfranchising tens of thousands of voters who voted by mail. Despite his rhetoric, it doesn't look like he has enough to take any of the races to the Supreme Court but, if he does, the Republicans are in a 6-3 majority there. Are the judges shameless enough to steal the election for Trump?

Overall it still looks like Biden will be President in January but it is by no means certain.

MadameMinimes · 05/11/2020 07:51

Biden’s margin in Arizona has narrowed significantly overnight. I’m still a but puzzled by the decision to call Arizona for Biden so early. He may still win Arizona but I think there should be a general rule that a state is not called for a candidate until the number of votes left to count is smaller than the number that the front runner is leading by. If Biden wins Pennsylvania (which I feel certain he will by a comfortable margin of at least 100,000 votes), then he can actually afford to lose Arizona and every other state left to declare. It would be a big embarrassment for the AP though.

TweeBree · 05/11/2020 07:52

Some gossip floating around that Nevada knows Biden has won but is holding off announcing it because the Secretary of State is a Republican and doesn't want to be the state that gives him the win.

Obviously, take with a HUGE grain of salt, but the pettiness of it made me laugh. Grin

This is the first time I've looked at this thread as I've been scared to hope.

Still haven't dared put the champagne in the fridge.

Please please please please.....

Kljnmw3459 · 05/11/2020 09:26

I still think calling Arizona was a mistake. It's still way too early to know.

Lurkingforawhile · 05/11/2020 09:38

@sergeilavrov I have just seen some people tweeting about having their signatures matched up / errors corrected. Seems like a good idea being able to check online if your vote has been counted.

ShagMeRiggins · 05/11/2020 09:53

Only three incumbent Presidents have been defeated in history.

No, that is not true.

Only three incumbent Presidents have been defeated in history.

Nope, you mean 3 since WWII. I think it's 9 total that have only served one term?

Can one of you knowledgable types tell me what to make of the suggestions that if Biden wins he will only serve for a few months before stepping down for health reasons, making way for Kamala Harris.

How likely is this and what effect will it have?

Interesting about Arizona. How could Fox and AP make such a bad mistake?

Noooo! Is it swinging back the other way?

Kljnmw3459 · 05/11/2020 12:33

According to Sky they've still got over 400k votes to count and Biden has a very narrow lead.

Kljnmw3459 · 05/11/2020 12:34

I really really don't understand why some places including Fox called it so early? No wonder Trump camp was fuming.
