How much do you care who wins the US election?

Background: UK citizen here, residing in the UK and generally don't trust politicians.

I may be weird but I don't really care that much who wins the US election. AIBU? Everyone seems to be obsessed.

I feel for the Americans if they get stuck with Trump for another 4 years, however that problem feels so remote from my day to day reality and worries here in the UK. And what do I know about Biden? Absolutely nothing other than he seems like a nice old man.

So do you care? If so, why?

(Obviously if you have strong connection to the US either by citizenship, family or business, I assume you will care. This question is mainly for those of us who don't).

I don’t much care either. I think you elect the government you deserve. I’m cynical that Biden will be any different.

wellthatsunusual · 04/11/2020 02:40

I want Trump to lose even though I don't particularly want Biden to win. That is, I think Biden winning is a necessary evil in order to oust Trump.

I dislike Biden but I dislike Trump even more. And I'd be interested to see how he would react to losing.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 04/11/2020 02:41

@Dawnlassie

I care because Trump will have a monumental effect on whether we tackle climate change or not

Climate change is caused by increase and decrease in solar activity. Biden cant really do much about it unless he knows how to turn the sun down a couple of notches.

You what? Are you an Exxon bot or something? Here's a quick guide from one of the world's oldest scientific society, with links to more information: royalsociety.org/topics-policy/projects/climate-change-evidence-causes

Trump potentially being basically the most powerful person in the world for another 4 years makes me care a lot.

More on the Obama's family separation policy, detailing kids were also put in cages under his administration:

little children crying for their parents

Only not all the people being trafficked are the parents of the children they are with.

People trafficking is a vile, and at times horrific, business and children are used as valuable bargaining tools, by both traffickers and the ones being trafficked, or worse.

There was an horrific case in Europe, during the migrant crisis, I don't even want to post it, because it's just so upsetting

Blueberries0112 · 04/11/2020 02:46

I heard enough vile comments about who care for these children and who doesn't. Obama is not that cold

MerchantOfVenom · 04/11/2020 02:52

Like we’re going to take the word of someone so dull-minded that they don’t care about the outcome of this election, on climate change. Grin

Climate change is caused by the sun getting hotter and colder. FML, I’ve heard it all now. Grin

I care, because Trump at the helm hastens the decline of the US.

And with the US in decline, which emerging super-power will fill the vacuum? And what’s their record on democracy and human rights?

wellthatsunusual · 04/11/2020 02:58

Only not all the people being trafficked are the parents of the children they are with.

I take your point. I know it's not entirely simple. But some are being separated from their real parents too, they're not even denying that are they? It's just so upsetting, in both possible scenarios.

Inkpaperstars · 04/11/2020 02:59

I care for lots of reasons but maybe the biggest, climate change. Another four years of a climate change denieras US president, which
Trump basically amounts to, would be disastrous. Unthinkable really.

Tearsfortiers · 04/11/2020 03:09

I care who wins. Trump is an abomination, a cunt of the highest order and not fit for the office of POTUS. He revels in creating and encouraging division and hate in his country.

As someone who lived in the US and created a life there I care because Trump's immigration policies meant that despite my husband creating jobs for Americans we had to leave the country with just a couple of weeks' notice and return to the UK homeless. We took a huge hit financially from which we will never recover.

waitrosetrollydolly · 04/11/2020 03:14

I'm more intrigued how someone who has offended so many different groups of people ie women, people of colour, Mexicans, whole religious groups etc still got elected. How the hell didn't that happen ? So it's more a case of watching in disbelief than watching with interest .

lovelemoncurd · 04/11/2020 03:17

I care because the orange idiot wields a great deal of power and he is completely bonkers. If you have no interest then it must be lovely living in la la land!

BritWifeinUSA · 04/11/2020 03:22

A whole lot.

bp300 · 04/11/2020 03:27

It is vital for our trade deal that Trump gets in. Trump is half British and loves the UK. Biden would side with the EU and threaten to put us to the back of the queue. Fortunately Trump will win so this won't be a problem.

colouringindoors · 04/11/2020 03:31

I care hugely. If Trump gets in again it means a no-deal Brexit. Shit American food. The end of the NHS. And that's just the UK.
It also means worst case scenarios for climate change. Mass extinctions, mass migrations......

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/11/2020 03:42

And if Biden gets in the UK might come to its senses a little quicker and beg to rejoin the EU.

We can only hope.

PathThreeTwoOne · 04/11/2020 03:45

@waitrosetrollydolly

If you’re intrigued why not go directly to the pages of those you’ve listed and find out for yourself? If more people done so and actually listened to them without prejudice then maybe the USA wouldn’t be so divided as it appears to be right now.

VashtaNerada · 04/11/2020 03:47

I care because of what it says about humanity. I’m no Biden fan but it seems blindingly obvious to me that he’s the lesser of two evils. Trump stands for hatred of that which is different, and the fact that large numbers could support that makes me rethink the optimistic outlook I’ve had about people’s basic nature for most of my life Sad

PathThreeTwoOne · 04/11/2020 03:52

@VashtaNerada

How exactly does he stand for hatred?

VashtaNerada · 04/11/2020 03:54

@PathThreeTwoOne He has openly made comments that are anti-women, anti-black people, anti-LGBT people, anti-disabled people. He’s not exactly discreet about it!

Goosefoot · 04/11/2020 03:54

People tend to assume this is true, but his appeal is wider than a lot of people realise. He did pretty well in terms of the Hispanic vote in the last election, and of late he's been doing better with Hispanic and black men. The main group that can't stand him are women but plenty of women voted for him.

People underestimate the degree to which traditional Democratic voters have been alienated from the Democratic party. It's one thing to vote for someone pragmatically even when you don't like them, another to feel betrayed by those who were supposed to look out for you. Also the social unrest recently and BLM demonstrations, and particularly the defund the police campaign, were a gift to Trump. Many people living in areas with crime problems were frightened by that.

HappenedForAReisling · 04/11/2020 03:55

Living in Canada, I care a lot.

That's exactly how i feel.
Goosefoot · 04/11/2020 03:57

Also - in terms of pragmatic voters, most people don't have much faith that the Democratic party will look out for their interests. They have been cutting the social welfare system as hard as Republicans, and are as pro-globalism, and pro-big banks, as the Republicans. Maybe more so.

People end up voting on weird issues, or not voting, under those kinds of circumstances.
