How much do you care who wins the US election?

Background: UK citizen here, residing in the UK and generally don't trust politicians.

I may be weird but I don't really care that much who wins the US election. AIBU? Everyone seems to be obsessed.

I feel for the Americans if they get stuck with Trump for another 4 years, however that problem feels so remote from my day to day reality and worries here in the UK. And what do I know about Biden? Absolutely nothing other than he seems like a nice old man.

So do you care? If so, why?

(Obviously if you have strong connection to the US either by citizenship, family or business, I assume you will care. This question is mainly for those of us who don't).

I just find it amazing that the Democrats decided that of their 29 or 30 choices, a 77 year old, senile man with a poor historical record on certain issues, was the best chance of beating Trump.

Mistymonday · 04/11/2020 08:34

Climate change, protection of the wilderness and wildlife. Trump doesn’t give a sh*t about those things and the whole world will pay for it. We are in hard mitigation times and the next few years are crucial to determine the survival of life on this planet.

PlanDeRaccordement · 04/11/2020 08:35

@AngelicInnocent
I agree and I think it was such a bad decision that I half believe it was done on purpose.

peachescariad · 04/11/2020 08:37

I don't give a shit

Dugger57 · 04/11/2020 08:38

I don’t have American family (do have friends over there though) and no American work connections. But I care mostly because of climate change and the worldwide damage that Trump will do. Also he’s vile.

And I would like to see our govt - especially Bojo-the-mini-Trump - squirm if Biden wins, too.

But the news is making me a bit depressed so I think I’m going to stop watching it.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2020 08:39

I have never cared who won the US election. I kind of hoped Obama would because of him being the first black President but that wasn't a political view. I haven't paid enough attention to their politics to make an informed decision.

However, I loathe Trump and find him utterly repellent - it is an emotional response rather than based on anything sensible.

Mia1415 · 04/11/2020 09:19

I care a lot! The POTUS is the most powerful person in the world. We all should care.

ssd · 04/11/2020 09:23

I really care. I feel if trump wins the far right groups in this world will feel stronger. Its so dangerous.
As well as the feckin chlorinated chicken...

The world needs some good news for a change. Things are bad enough.

Gobbledygook20 · 04/11/2020 09:33

Don't give a monkey's. Sorry but that's the truth!

ILoveYoga · 04/11/2020 09:33

Everyone around the world should care

USA has immense amount of nuclear weapons, do we want a crazed narcissist in charge if the button? He continues to mentally degrade as time goes by. Terrifying thought

USA is a world leader in many things, including now saying there’s no global warming. It’s false news yet they’re a world leader in all forms of pollution. Do we want this to continue? Trump disbanded the EPA (environment protection agency) allows so much harm to continue and now go unchecked in one of the largest countries in the world - where incidentally many people can no longer drink their water as its contaminated.

If anyone is concerned with Hunan rights - what is going on and is proposed to happen violates so many sections of society. Thus then forms the mentality of its citizens. Normalises these activities which then get spilled out to other countries where USA has influence.

I could go on but people who read and understand how the world, countries, government policies etc are interconnected with understand.

I’m full of anxiety about what will happen.

I’m also an American in UK

Nottherealslimshady · 04/11/2020 09:46

My opinion of Americans will go down if they vote Trump in again but I kinda just consider America to be a lost cause but also feel like if you refuse to make a deal with them you become the enemy, they're like the Regina George of global politics.

Also, the way they do politics is weird af and I'm getting annoyed to see it start happening in ours. The slagging eachother off, massive rallys with cheering and music and fucking merc. Politics should be clean and factual and honest.... ok maybe I'm just dreaming with that one.

SebastianTheCrab · 04/11/2020 09:58

@Flaxmeadow

This with fucking bells on! Worse still some German spokesperson had the audacity to suggest that Simone Barreto Silva wasn't really a black woman, as she had led a 'white life', therefore not deserving of BLM's support. That comment has since been hidden on Twitter.

I know. Its sickening

Simone Barreto Silva was such a massive hero, she was so brave and we lost her. I could cry when I read about her.

Where are the BLM crowd now? These celebs and the bleeding hearts. We don't even know her name in the UK never mind the USA. The media went all out for months covering the man in the USA. Literally months of news stories about him. I just don't understand it

And I completely disagree with @Harriedharriet's assessment, which is literally fake news.
  1. The statistics show more white people are shot to death by police in the US than Black people. See attached stats. The commonality is not colour but police brutality, due to lack of training and other factors.

  2. BLM as a movement is heavily intertwined with Nation of Islam. That is one reason you will never see them elevate Simone's name - the other, of course, is that it's not deemed politically fashionable to point out the trend for extremist Muslims beheading people on the streets in the West.

How much do you care who wins the US election?
bravotango · 04/11/2020 10:12

WTF? Of course I care. You should too.

reallifegetsintheway2 · 04/11/2020 10:16

@AngelicInnocent - 100% agree with this. Can someone say why Biden was picked as a candidate?

GiraffeNecked · 04/11/2020 10:19

@Marchmarch

I care. Trump emboldens other twats to be even bigger twats.
Yes, this.

But I'm trying not to care as I can't influence or change anything as far as this goes. It's like the Brexit vote, many people who feel disenfranchised are having their say.

Blueberries0112 · 04/11/2020 10:19

There are far more white people than any other people in the US

Every black person have been stopped by police for being suspicious of them when they didn't do anything or did something minor that white people do too. Stopped to look at a beautiful yard while white - it is admiring their yard. Stopped to look at a beautiful yard while black- it's planning to break in and steal

Anyway, it's about the population. We can say these amount of people shop at ikea but it does not mean it is popular with white people because the population is huge (my aunts and grandma don't care for ikea, it's not their style) when the population of minorities are smaller and it shown that half of them shop at ikea, it goes to show it is really popular

Noitjustwontdo · 04/11/2020 10:21

I don’t think Biden is much better tbh. They’re both old white men and both have been accused of sexual assault. Neither make for a great candidate imo.

Winterterrace · 04/11/2020 10:22

From wiki

The United States is one of a handful of countries to select candidates through popular vote in a primary election system; most other countries rely on party leaders or paid up party members to select candidates, as was previously the case in the U.S. In modern politics, primary elections have been described as a significant vehicle for taking decision-making from political insiders to the voters, though this is disputed by select political science research. The selection of candidates for federal, state, and local general elections takes place in primary elections organized by the public administration for the general voting public to participate in for the purpose of nominating the respective parties' official candidates; state voters start the electoral process for governors and legislators through the primary process, as well as for many local officials from city councilors to county commissioners. The candidate who moves from the primary to be successful in the general election takes public office.

diplodocusinermine · 04/11/2020 10:23

We are going to have to do a trade deal with the US. With Biden as president I had some hope for the GFA. With Trump it'll be meat pumped full of antibiotics.

Trump generally gives room for the extreme right and white supremacists to move into the main stream. The pictures of white supremacists manhandling assault weapons lining streets where BLM protests were taking place were horrifying.

Trump basically laughs at human decency.

Winterterrace · 04/11/2020 10:28

I care who wins because, whatever your political leanings or beliefs, having a demagogue with no belief in anything but himself as leader of a huge and powerful country isn’t good for anyone.

Noideawottodo · 04/11/2020 10:31

@AngelicInnocent

Yes, me too and it's made me not care who wins as the Democrats are obviously clueless.

A trade deal with US is far more likely with Trump, however, and we are going to need it after Brexit.

DynamoKev · 04/11/2020 10:33

@seayork2020

I am concerned a little as what the US decides will actually affect the rest of the world BUT I also think people are also being melodramatic about it too and non us citizen who has actually no connection to the US and has never been saying things like 'I am crying tonight' type thing very dramatic
Totally agree with this
QueenBlueberries · 04/11/2020 10:37

A high percentage of people who voted for Biden did so to vote against Trump, not because they really thought Biden would be a good leader. It's a shame the Democrats couldn't find a better candidate, someone that people could really get behind. It would have made a huge difference to the results.

I care a lot, because of Covid policies, climate change, international relations and relation with the UK specifically, the huge division in society caused by Trump and his crew, and because he's a twat of course. Mocking disabled people, mocking people with speech impediments, mocking women of colour.

But please please Scotland ban him for moving to the UK.

ImnotCarolineHirons · 04/11/2020 10:38

Hugely because Trump wants our NHS contracts and Johnson wants to sell it off to him.

Noideawottodo · 04/11/2020 10:40

@ImnotCarolineHirons

Hugely because Trump wants our NHS contracts and Johnson wants to sell it off to him.
I'm pretty sure this isn't at all true.
