How much do you care who wins the US election?

Background: UK citizen here, residing in the UK and generally don't trust politicians.

I may be weird but I don't really care that much who wins the US election. AIBU? Everyone seems to be obsessed.

I feel for the Americans if they get stuck with Trump for another 4 years, however that problem feels so remote from my day to day reality and worries here in the UK. And what do I know about Biden? Absolutely nothing other than he seems like a nice old man.

So do you care? If so, why?

(Obviously if you have strong connection to the US either by citizenship, family or business, I assume you will care. This question is mainly for those of us who don't).

The outcome has potentially huge implications - not just for us and any trade deal, but for Iran and other countries. Also broadly his election represented another shift in the international mood politically.

Also, I just feel for the Americans.

Not especially. Seems the opinionated folk are really getting frothy about the prospect of trump getting in again. Its too funny seeing such opinionated people get angry. So on that basis GO TRUMP!

OhhCarolina · 04/11/2020 01:24

Yeah I care about people in the USA too. All the ones I know are decent types and I tend to think this is true across the board, and don't deserve this shitshow.

Mind, I think the same of us in the UK. We don't always get the politicians we deserve.

GivingItAMiss · 04/11/2020 01:26

I care because Trump will have a monumental effect on whether we tackle climate change or not.

I care because our post Brexir trade deal will rely on who comes out on top and if it's Trump I'm terrified for the future of the NHS.

I care because of the appalling way Trump treats those he deems as lesser than himself including the children of migrants/illegals and women and black people as a whole.

I care because Trump has made a mockery of the role of US president. Having Twitter tantrums like a toddler and whipping up hatred and intolerance whenever he gets the opportunity.

I'm in the UK and I very much care.

Bellabelles · 04/11/2020 01:29

You are being very naive and ignorant not to care - the result will have global implications particularly for trade, the environment, the economy and general relations. It will affect you and ultimately have an impact on your day to day reality.

People can care as much or as little as they like unless they are entitled to vote in the US there in nothing they can do about the result.

@mygenericusername

I care because the trump administration is separating the children of immigrants from their parents and keeping them in cages, and that is an issue which transcends borders and party allegiances

Firstly they are ILLEGALS with zero rights and while you're looking up what that means you may want to fact check your data. The cages were introduced by good old Obama

What a way to speak about human beings, particularly children. Disgusting.

Maybe / maybe not. Be we cant do shit about what happens so why get in such a bother about it.

Time40 · 04/11/2020 01:34

I care, because if Trump wins we will have no chance at all of controlling climate change. It would be a disaster - such a disaster that it's terrifying. Really terrifying. This is probably the most important election that has ever happened in the history of our world. I really can't understand people who say they don't care ... I wonder what people like that think is going on in the world. I wonder what they read, and what they watch, and where they get their news from. I despair. I'm so terrified that I'm staying up all night to see if there are any glimmers of hope.

Brexit is looming and we need a good and speedy trade deal with the USA.
Bojo says ( though I wouldn't trust a word he says) the NHS is off the table as far as USA is concerned but we buy a lot of our medications from them and the American pharmaceutical giants want a much bigger say in the prices which could have huge ramifications for the NHS

  • yes, and all that too.
Flaxmeadow · 04/11/2020 01:35

I get that it's an important election in the sense of world affairs, it's the USA, and why we have the election coverage tonight, but I'm tired of USA politics and news in general. There's just way too much of it in our UK news, especially the saturation we had 24/7 for months in the summer

And that means it's ok to treat them like animals? What a vile opinion you have.
BananaPop2020 · 04/11/2020 01:35

You should care. This sort of political apathy is exactly why we are in the state we are.

Dawnlassie · 04/11/2020 01:35

Climate change is caused by increase and decrease in solar activity. Biden cant really do much about it unless he knows how to turn the sun down a couple of notches.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 04/11/2020 01:35

Yeah calling human beings, children ILLEGALS (capital letters to further dehumanise) is the mark of an ARSEHOLE.

Blueberries0112 · 04/11/2020 01:36

Didn't Trump felt entitled to own land in Scotland? He will feel even more entitled now that he is president and other countries would rather not stir the pot. It's easier to tell him no when he is not president.

Krampusasbabysitter · 04/11/2020 01:37

Someone mentioned that the UK buys most of their medication from US pharmaceutical companies but that isn’t correct, as according to the Office for National Statistics, only 9% of all medicines imported by the NHS come directly from the US. In contrast, 79% of medicine imports come from the European Union, such as Novartis, Roche Holding, Sanofi, Novo Nordisk, Merck, UCB, Boehringer Ingelheim, or Bayer. Plus, the rest comes from UK companies such as GlaxoSmithKline and Astra Zeneca. The leading two pharmaceuticals are Swiss who are more than happy to continue trading with the UK as the second largest European market for their wares.

This. Children in cages.
Barbzaaaaa · 04/11/2020 01:41

@Flaxmeadow You should be hoping for a Biden win then. If America can become somewhat stabilised you'll be hearing less about it. America has been so prevalent in UK media because of the pure absurdity of the Trump administration.

Leaannb · 04/11/2020 01:41

@OhhCarolina

I care in that it's important who is in charge of the USA. Hence my name. I'm saying now that north Carolina is going to be a pivotal moment.

I'm also fatigued in that I find it almost incredible that out of the entirety of that massive country, it's a race between two elderly sex pests, one of whom is slightly better than the other.

Remember watching Obama winning. I fell asleep on purpose and kept the telly going, got woke up by the noise. It was genuinely exciting. This isn't.

Im in NC also. Following very closely
Barbzaaaaa · 04/11/2020 01:44

I tell you what, if Trump gets it this time then I'm giving up any hope of the world getting on the right track towards climate change before it's too late (it already is too late, but attempting to mitigate it would not do any harm). It'll be straight downhill from here. I feel so awful for my kids.

Leaannb · 04/11/2020 01:48

@Austriana...Obama built the cages and did keep children also. Not as widespread or with Trump's systemic no tolerance approach but Obama's hands are not clean on that

Flaxmeadow · 04/11/2020 01:48

It was more the constant news, for months on end, about one man who died thousands of miles away, and the subsequent BLM hysteria.

A woman died just across the channel in France recently. She was a mother of two children. She tried to warn people as she was being hacked to death. Her sister said she "fought like a warrior". She was decapitated by a terrorist. Where was BLM then? Where were all the celebrities and football stars taking a knee for her? Why wasn't she on our news 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
