What do you dislike most about today's society?

For me this society has made good steps i.e. gender equality, fight against racism and speaking out on mental health.

However, there are aspects which I dislike.

  1. Posting everything on social media (nowadays a lot of people feel like they need to post everything on social media which can be dangerous as someone who is not close to you can know important details of your life)

  2. Consumerism (wanting new things, latest stuff etc..) I think see this especially with children who want what their friends have such as the latest phone, shoes, laptop etc..

  3. The world is more individualistic rather than collectivist (Before we used to check up on our elderly relatives, neighbours and would have a chat to people say who we saw outside.) Another example is bashing people on benefits, free school meals rather than helping these individuals some see them as scroungers which is totally wrong.

  4. Too much hypocrisy (We see people making campaigns like #BeKind but they are the same people who bully others.)

  5. We need to teach more real life things from an early age that impacts everyone (i.e. cooking, finance, savings etc..)

I hate how everything is so divided now. Like people on one side of the political spectrum will vilify the other and vice versa. There's no trying to meet in the middle.

Horsemad · 01/11/2020 20:06

Everyone's so grabby.

OrtamLeevz · 01/11/2020 20:07

The absolute refusal of people to abide by rules for the good of society as a whole. Self-interest rules the day.

tigger001 · 01/11/2020 20:07

The selfishness of people and the increasing attitude of people who think of themselves and only themselves, they don't seem to have empathy for those less fortunate. This stems into people politically but I don't have the energy to get into again, I feel like I am talking about it a lot with people in real life, so a break for now.

Social media, I still have not "given in" to Facebook or do I post on Instagram, but I hate what it represents, I worry the pressures that will be on my darling son when he is older, I know these pressures have always been there in one form or another, but it's the option/need of the constant access I hate about social media.

I'm told bullying is a lot worse now, which saddens me. I'm told this by friend who is a governor of bullying at my school, which is probably evident in even the need to have such a thing !!!

Litter and our never ending consumption of plastic tat.

But, on a more petty note: using fb to rant and rave like a lunatic about things that, in real life, merit a shrug. These ravings are usually in CAPS LOCK and punctuated with multiple angry face emojis.

damselindedress · 01/11/2020 20:13

Consumer culture! Buying a load of unnecessary crap and being sold that crap too.

The inequality in society.

Obsession with money, looks and status, which is nothing new but just fuels the consumer culture and make people insecure.

The impact on social media on the fragile developing minds of our kids, who will inevitably compare themselves to people online who are more popular and have more likes etc and end up feeling crap.

The way hardcore internet porn has become normalised and the fact kids are able to access it far too young and it distorts their idea of what sex is.

Littering, it's not hard to pit something in a bin or pick up your dog's shit.

The wilful stupidly of Brexit

Jericool · 01/11/2020 20:14

Also things aren't made to last - washing machines used to last 15 years and now they last 3 if we're lucky. Planned obsolescence.

To have no resilience to anything at all and scream MH for the slightest inconvenience

This 1000% times.

Populist politics

peanut2017 · 01/11/2020 20:16

Social media is the biggest curse of our time and we will look back at think what the hell were we thinking - sharing every single detail of our lives - such an impact on people's mental health

Hatred for women and how this impacts women in every aspect of our lives. Even more sad is that a lot of women hate other women

People not picking up their dog poo

Politics - so corrupt and believe they are better than everyone else - do as I say not as I do.

How are we looking at two seventy odd year old, white men being elected in the US? Both have questions marks around their treatment of women - and women vote for these pricks?

AlexaShutUp · 01/11/2020 20:16

And excessive self-interest.

Jericool · 01/11/2020 20:17

A lot of people criticising women nowadays in these comments, so to add a few important things:
Men STILL being sexist pigs
Men STILL treating women as objects
Men STILL being in more positions of power than women
Men STILL being violent, abhorrent beings

SpeedofaSloth · 01/11/2020 20:18

Social media pile-ons/ cancel culture.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/11/2020 20:20

I am the odd one out. I like SM. But that's probably because I don't follow any "influencers" but only things like national trust, art, local businesses, museums etc. (And obviously family and handful of friends)Blush

Agree, and then people wonder why our MH service are so over burdened. People don't seem to have any resilience skills anymore
kittykat35 · 01/11/2020 20:24

The fucking moaning!!

The moaning about something but not being open to help it change...full of excuses and no bloody solutions!

DOES MY HEAD IN!!

lazylinguist · 01/11/2020 20:25

Celebrity culture. The pressure on people (mostly young women and girls) to look a certain way. It's so depressing that after decades of feminism, women are still judged primarily on how they look and are encouraged to surgically alter themselves to fit a ridiculous image of beauty.

Jericool · 01/11/2020 20:30

For those in the comments moaning about MH: why don't you just stick us in asylums like you used to? This 'resilience' stuff is a load of BS. If you'd ever been mentally ill yourself maybe you'd understand, but because you're fine you think everyone should be. Judgemental dicks. People like YOU are what I hate

Onxob · 01/11/2020 20:32

Most people live in Any House, on Any Street , in Any Town and haven't got a butcher, baker or candlestickmaker within miles. Grin

I was on a Facebook page the other week. Nothing outrageous just a parenting one. One of the people commenting on a post had numerous people disagree with her and challenge her. There was no nastiness at all just straight laced debate (just to say I was lurking not commenting, so no skin in the game) anyway the poster didn't like that people were challenging her and starting tagging admin saying "admin can you step in here please I don't feel safe. This is not a safe space" It actually made me want to weep for humanity.

It's just all so 🤮

Stripesnomore · 01/11/2020 20:34

‘For those in the comments moaning about MH: why don't you just stick us in asylums like you used to?’

Given that you have to wait months or years for basic counselling, I doubt anyone would be prepared to fund asylums.

Frestba · 01/11/2020 20:45

Those that feel the need to post everything on social media. Beards. Pouting. Uncharitable types doing charitable things for adulation. General fakeness.

furrypesto · 01/11/2020 20:46

Given that you have to wait months or years for basic counselling, I doubt anyone would be prepared to fund asylums.

Well no, quite. The closure of the asylums was a massive money saving exercise. 'Yes, yes, of course the mentally ill should be integrated into society not shut away' they said. Except the reality was they were and still are left with hardly anything because it's cheaper that way. 'Couldn't care less in the community'.

My list:
The cheapening of language. When I was young to read something in print meant something. Even a published letter to a newspaper was somehow important. The printed word was considered precious. Now we have 24/7 drivel spouted on twitter/social media which has led to so much dumbing down. When I was young, literary novelists were celebrities. Now just pump you lips full of shit, spout a load of #s, take a belfie and there you go, you're a celebrity.
