What do you dislike most about today's society?

For me this society has made good steps i.e. gender equality, fight against racism and speaking out on mental health.

However, there are aspects which I dislike.

  1. Posting everything on social media (nowadays a lot of people feel like they need to post everything on social media which can be dangerous as someone who is not close to you can know important details of your life)

  2. Consumerism (wanting new things, latest stuff etc..) I think see this especially with children who want what their friends have such as the latest phone, shoes, laptop etc..

  3. The world is more individualistic rather than collectivist (Before we used to check up on our elderly relatives, neighbours and would have a chat to people say who we saw outside.) Another example is bashing people on benefits, free school meals rather than helping these individuals some see them as scroungers which is totally wrong.

  4. Too much hypocrisy (We see people making campaigns like #BeKind but they are the same people who bully others.)

  5. We need to teach more real life things from an early age that impacts everyone (i.e. cooking, finance, savings etc..)

People whining publicly about things they dislike that have absolutely no impact on their own lives 🙄

Ihatefish · 01/11/2020 19:27

People being unable to think for themselves, there are large swathes of people who have a knowledge base based entirely on hashtags.

The majority of entertainment is throwaway, empty and not creative. Culture which is designed to make you think is very rare these days

Consumerism being a religion

The demands for immediate gratification

Pressure on women to inject poisons into their face and undergo risky surgery

How close we are to thought police being a real thing

grassisjeweled · 01/11/2020 19:27

And I fucking hate this jumping on the bandwagon because it's trendy. Environmentalism, veganisim etc -

Also agree about the lack of thoughtlessness

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 01/11/2020 19:28

Social media and the culture of oneupmanship and "look at me". Don't get me started on the pouting selfies.

FFS123 · 01/11/2020 19:29

Peoples inability to see their own strangeness.
There was a recent incident in my village where teenagers were cruel to a villagr pond duck. People were up in arms about it. But went home and ate their lunch without a consideration for the factory farmed horrendously cruelly treated animal they were eating.

funinthesun19 · 01/11/2020 19:30

Oh my god where to start.

-Social media
-Name and shame culture/filming people culture
-Online learning being seen as fabulous (it’s not)
-Benefit bashers/people on low income bashers
-Lots of rude obnoxious people
-Busy bodies
-Irritating dog lovers
-The way people go on about back in their day how hard it was and how younger people today shouldn’t have an easier life just because they didn’t.
-The attitude towards families with young children. Absolutely vicious.

comingintomyown · 01/11/2020 19:31

Throw away culture
Fast food
Obsession with appearance and bragging rights

Cam77 · 01/11/2020 19:33

@Sparkledusty
Snowflakeness, today's generation gets so offended by every little thing.“

But do they really? Always seems to be that for every “snowflake” there are 100, usually older, people moaning about aforementioned snowflake and how people “weren’t like that in my day” and “the younger generation don’t know there born”... and bemoaning how much tougher they had it with their free higher education, sensible house prices etc. The irony always escapes them .....

The self-centeredness. Especially when people try to disguise it. I've unfollowed teo people on Instagram this week who wrote about how it was time to start putting themselves first because they've always been so selfless and they've realised they are important to and thet should only worry about themselves...all bull shit

Cam77 · 01/11/2020 19:35

@grassisjeweled
“And I fucking hate this jumping on the bandwagon because it's trendy. Environmentalism, veganisim etc -”

Or could be just a fair few people are waking up to the fact that there is a problem. And given we’re still a few centuries off terraforming other planets, if we ever get that far, probably logical to treat this one a bit better...

feelingverylazytoday · 01/11/2020 19:36

Where to start -
Low standards and tolerance for shit behaviour
People who refuse to accept personal responsibility for their own behaviour
Identity politics, beardy wokebros and shit about pronouns
Champagne socialists and smug celebrities telling us who to vote for.

SisterAgatha · 01/11/2020 19:38

And everywhere I go there’s a fucking hipster trying to trip me up. Stop ruining London.

Napqueen1234 · 01/11/2020 19:40

@toconclude

The idea that things used to be so much better. This news in...nope.
I find this 100%. Older people talking about the good old days and in the same breath talking about how much harder they had things. I’m a nurse and older colleagues lament the ‘good old days’ of nursing (when student nurses would be expected to run whole wards over the weekend, patients regularly had bedsores, repeated falls, unsafe manoeuvres etc) Hmm. The golden eras that never actually were.
Cam77 · 01/11/2020 19:40

Re: social media. Facebook and it’s system of public “Likes” has been particularly insidious. Rather than encouraging honest sharing and open discussion, it instead invites a popularity contest, particularly among younger and impressionable users. This is good for advertising model, but terrible for fostering real communication. Other social media appso in other countries do not make Likes public, but unfortunately we’re stuck with Facebook.

comingintomyown · 01/11/2020 19:41

Consumerism and the way we are marketed endless rubbish we don’t need to cello our houses, our clothes and ourselves

ilovecardigans · 01/11/2020 19:42

General arseholery and complete absence of any common sense whatsoever.

pralineandketchup · 01/11/2020 19:42

That there seems to be no empathy, compassion or anything other than judgment of less fortunate people as seen by a vile thread in aibu recently.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 01/11/2020 19:43

The obsession with labels and the rather ness to label everyone with something rather than just letting them be themselves.

BefuddledPerson · 01/11/2020 19:44

This is an interesting thread, I'm struggling to narrow it down to just one thing Grin

Jericool · 01/11/2020 19:49

The 24hr news cycle. That news is written as clickbait a lot of the time. That we are constantly exposed to terrible news from all over the whole - this is awful for our MH and no generation pre-internet had to deal with such a deluge of constant negative information.

pisspants · 01/11/2020 19:49

I hate the social media judging that goes on. My local FB page is full of people taking photo's of things happening in public, such as poor parking or kids playing out during lockdown that everyone then wades in on. Totally pointless.
Then there's the opposite of people posting themselves doing something good just to show themselves in a positive light, such as giving a sandwich to someone homeless for eg. What happened to just doing something good with noone knowing about it?!!

Murraytheskull · 01/11/2020 19:52

People who claim things are so much better now but do everything they can to prevent it - like my employer. Says we have flexi working but will do everything to prevent it happening under guise of 'business need'. Why lie?

Suzi888 · 01/11/2020 19:56

The selfishness, hatred, bitterness, mean spirited nature of the human race. There’s not a lot we have going for us really.

Whatafustercluck · 01/11/2020 19:57

Young women's obsession with how they look, spending huge amounts on hair, nails, getting their lips injected to make them look plump when they're perfectly lovely as they are.
