What do you dislike most about today's society?

For me this society has made good steps i.e. gender equality, fight against racism and speaking out on mental health.

However, there are aspects which I dislike.

  1. Posting everything on social media (nowadays a lot of people feel like they need to post everything on social media which can be dangerous as someone who is not close to you can know important details of your life)

  2. Consumerism (wanting new things, latest stuff etc..) I think see this especially with children who want what their friends have such as the latest phone, shoes, laptop etc..

  3. The world is more individualistic rather than collectivist (Before we used to check up on our elderly relatives, neighbours and would have a chat to people say who we saw outside.) Another example is bashing people on benefits, free school meals rather than helping these individuals some see them as scroungers which is totally wrong.

  4. Too much hypocrisy (We see people making campaigns like #BeKind but they are the same people who bully others.)

  5. We need to teach more real life things from an early age that impacts everyone (i.e. cooking, finance, savings etc..)

And (related to my last post in a way) I am beginning to despise men. When they talk to me I’m just waiting for them to show their true colours: that they have no understanding of the female experience, and that they don’t much care to have either.

Bellesavage · 01/11/2020 19:05

Virtue signalling

sst1234 · 01/11/2020 19:06

Never taking responsibility for your choices, it’s always someone else’s fault.
All bad behaviour is put down to mental health issues, holding people responsible for their actions is just not done.

Spreadingchestnut · 01/11/2020 19:06

Too much emphasis on "self-confidence", "self-care", "self- fulfilment". Don't get me wrong, all of those things are very good. But there should be emphasis on thinking about others too.

Marchitectmummy · 01/11/2020 19:07

Armchair experts - why people think they know better than people who have been educated in and or are experienced in is beyond me. The general masses read something on Facebook then regurgitate out as a true message. C19 shows tbe phenomenon clearly general mass know more about masks, vaccines, tbe existence of the disease, the best way to treat it, how politicians should handle it - you name it armchair experts have the answer.

Caeruleanblue · 01/11/2020 19:08

The idea that things used to be so much better. This news in...nope
I don't know - there were fewer people, fewer vehicles on the roads, fewer dogs and cats, better air quality, less stuff, less pollution ......

1Morewineplease · 01/11/2020 19:08

I don't like the 'but what about me?' attitude.

I'm fed up of hearing folk brag about 'sourcing local meat, veg etc..." so as to justify wholesomeness. Most people live in Any House, on Any Street , in Any Town and haven't got a butcher, baker or candlestickmaker within miles.

I don't like silly spending on designer labels ( much of which is made by slave labour.)

Entitlement.

Rule breakers

justanotherneighinparadise · 01/11/2020 19:09

The ‘no regrets’ culture also. What’s with that? Having regrets is how we learn to not make the same mistakes again. It’s what makes us learn empathy and compassion. I can’t stand those who declare to have zero regrets, I think they’re cold individuals.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/11/2020 19:10

Which is incredibly shit because it just helps to keep the bad stereotypes about MH in!
PawPrincess · 01/11/2020 19:12

No genuine empathy or support.
Obnoxious shoving down your throat types on social media.
Self centeredness to the point of choking all others.

TiersTiersTiers · 01/11/2020 19:12

To have no resilience to anything at all and scream MH for the slightest inconvenience.

How entitled many people are.

The thinking that a 'degree' means they should get a certain pay/level of career (I have 3 different degrees and I would never expect a mere paper qualification alone to open doors to the best jobs).

The forgetting that some families really do not have enough money to feed themselves and feeling OK to suggest it is because they waste what they are given...lack of understanding for poverty.

Social media - posting for likes/selfies filters filters filters then the gosh you are so beautiful comments.... Grin. Beauty is only skin or filter deep.

SisterAgatha · 01/11/2020 19:14

Spoiled adults.

nosswith · 01/11/2020 19:15

Several things I dislike have been mentioned by the OP and others that I agree with.

What I dislike most, over and above all things, is who is our current Prime Minister is, and that anyone thinks he is even adequate.

grassisjeweled · 01/11/2020 19:16

Anti-intellectualism

Lack of real community

All this faux caring about minority groups - the #blacklivesmatter movement particularly got my goat.

ForthPlace · 01/11/2020 19:16

Lack of resilience.
Selfishness
Hypocritical
Lack of empathy

jessstan1 · 01/11/2020 19:19

I totally agree with 1,2 and 5 but on the whole, things are much better than when I was young. There was certainly a lot of hypocrisy about then, massive! I strove for individuality which did not make me an uncaring person.

Stripesnomore · 01/11/2020 19:19

Littering and fly tipping, environmental problems, housing crisis, lack of mental health services, entitlement, excessive pressure on teens, increasing levels of authoritarianism and cancel culture.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/11/2020 19:20

Anti-intellectualism

Glamorising stupid... Let's face it. There is a celebrity famous for being dumb... It's just... How? 🤦

Sparkledusty · 01/11/2020 19:20

Things I dislike about todays society.....

  1. Snowflakeness, today's generation gets so offended by every little thing.
  2. Selfishness of people today & the bugger you jack as I'm alright attitude.
  3. Attention seeking people on social media ie so so checked in to hospital 🙄
  4. Nothing is private on social media, this generation posts every single thing ie: so so had a big dump today 🙄 I could go on forever, but they're my main 4 pet peeves!
anniemouse · 01/11/2020 19:20

Snowflakes
Me, myself and I
Fake tan, eyebrows, eyelashes, lips, nails, boobs etc
Glowups
#Making memories

ForthPlace · 01/11/2020 19:21

And
lack of common sense
lack of intelligence

Why do people believe all they see and read in the media without researching and finding out the facts.

For instance our local MP along with his voters are celebrating gaining £23 million for one local town. The same town council has had its budget cut by £53m over the last few years...yet people are delighted....with a loss of £30m...bizarre!

Mymycherrypie · 01/11/2020 19:23

I discussed this with my DP earlier.

There’s a notable lack in being able to ascertain the quality of things. From the big things right down to the little things.

So small scale (my SIL just as an example) is unable to tell the difference between Paxo with water and home made sausage meat stuffing. She wouldn’t express any gratitude for the trouble it might have taken for you to make it from scratch, to her out of a box tastes exactly the same and you were a chump to make it because there’s no difference anyway.

Take that attitude to the political arena. Or the scientific community.

“Trump is as good as Obama, the US still exists doesn’t it? Disneyland is still open? All good then, no problem!“

“My mate said vaccines are shit and she’s really clever, doesn’t matter that people who have studied for years have done proper quantifiable research”

A piece of shit is the same as gold to a throwaway society.

BlueThistles · 01/11/2020 19:24

the world is too noisy for me OP. Everyone has a voice .. an opinion .. a right .. an entitlement .. are offended.. by something someone everyone.. it's all just so noisy .. I can't bear it 😔

Cam77 · 01/11/2020 19:25
  1. The massive hypocrisy/willful ignorance over treatment of animals bred for food. I’m not saying we should all go strict vegetarian/vegan, but current practices against highly intelligent mammals are barbaric and have no place in civilized society. You wouldn’t dream of inflicting such cruelty on an intelligent dog, so don’t do it to an equally intelligent pig or a cow.

  2. The amount countries still spend on killing each other. The US spends nearly $1 trillion annually on weapons.

  3. Social media and the overwhelmingly negative affect on people in terms of brain development, mental and physical health.

  4. That there is scarcely any shame in modern politics anymore in politicians telling flat out lies and mistruths - which then spread like wildfire through both traditional and new media.

TrickorTreacle · 01/11/2020 19:26

Social media has a lot to answer for.

  • if you don't have SM, you don't exist
  • SM used as an outlet for propaganda
  • conspiracy theories e.g. 5G
  • narcissism
  • copy cat attention-seeking status updates e.g. "Je Suis Charlie" (Charlie Hebdo) with the French flag (when they don't really mean it), similar to narcissism above
  • identity politics is a cancer
  • hashtags and witch-hunts
  • similar to above: people getting pulled up or sacked because of a post they made 10 years ago when they were aged 13
