So frustrated with all the people, from the ineffective and blustering MP to the idiots out trick or treating tonight............

When will people learn that a bloody pandemic cannot be ignored and that insisting on personal freedoms/ personal preferences is NOT going to shorten the lock downs or save the vulnerable ? Sad

Aka OP, I entirely agree with you.

Goosefoot · 31/10/2020 18:56

No.

It's caused by it being a virus that is very well adapted to move through the population. It's not going to be eradicated so it will always begin to spread more once people stop extreme lockdown measures, which are impossible to maintain.

It's also the case that even less extreme but significant human behaviour modifications are not easy, and sometimes impossible, to maintain over the long term. That's not people being stupid, it's just a fact and anyone who works in public health knows it. If it were easy think of all the things we could do - everyone would get enough exercise, no one would drink or do drugs, we'd eat home cooked meals and stay off the internet, and there would be no more STIs.

The real misunderstanding is people who somehow think it's possible to avoid a virus like this moving through the population, it isn't and never has been realistic.

BoingBoingyBoing · 31/10/2020 18:56

"The virus should be allowing to sweep through the population. My honest and unpopular opinion!"

Don't know anyone over the age of 60 or with other underlying health conditions then?

DappledOliveGroves · 31/10/2020 18:57

@LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus absolutely agree. Bring it on. Why are we screwing the world up to save the over 65s?

hetanom · 31/10/2020 18:57

The thing is, if it's down to individual non-compliance, then it's occurring on a continental scale. At that point you have to accept that it's part of the human condition and design your response accordingly. No point implementing measures that the population of an entire continent has shown itself incapable of following at the level needed. And better to then change your approach than to get emotional and start insulting people.

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/10/2020 18:57

Tbf they shouldn’t have let people go on holiday or sent the schools/uni back to work.

But they did and now they’re panicking over Christmas.

DrManhattan · 31/10/2020 18:57

I wonder what would have happened if Boris had sacked Scummings and not lost the country so early on?

LivingOnAnIsland · 31/10/2020 18:59

The people that try and blame the Tories for EVERYTHING are just so funny! So glad that mumsnet is not a reflection of the balance of the way people in the UK actually think and vote.

whatkatydid2013 · 31/10/2020 18:59

@Soundbyte

I think it’s a shame that people are being coerced into blaming each other for this shitshow and turning on each other rather than directing their ire at the actual cause - the shower of bastards that is our government.

Not everything.

Just their fucking shit reaction to the current crisis.

And brexit, of course.

But that's about it. I don't blame them that my garden is a bit of a mess.

BoingBoingyBoing · 31/10/2020 19:03

"I think it’s a shame that people are being coerced into blaming each other for this shitshow and turning on each other rather than directing their ire at the actual cause - the shower of bastards that is our government."

Absolutely this. The "general public" are not ultimately responsible for how the country is managed. In the summer, we had it under control and if we'd had an effective testing and track and trace program we'd be nowhere NEAR where we are now. Not to mention the fact that literally BILLIONS have been given to private firms to not deliver the required PPE.

If you think this is anything other than a complete failure of government you aren't keeping up, to be frank.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 31/10/2020 19:09

I'm with you OP. I keep reading on here posts about how most people are complying with mask-wearing, social distancing, etc in their area and they think it is not a problem. Well, not where I live. I live in an outer London suburb and commute into Central London for work. Most people are wearing masks but some of those are wearing them below their nose, taking them off to speak on their mobiles (you can speak through them! Try it!) and even taking them down to hang round their necks randomly during journeys for no apparent reason. There are odd people and small groups of 2 or 3 who get on and don't have masks at all (chances of everyone in their group having a medical exemption seems small). The buses are much worse. It seems to be the minority that use hand sanitiser on tube, train or bus now. It seems that quite a few people seem still to think that the mask is to protect themselves, not others, so not wearing one only affects themselves. WRONG!

Dragongirl10 · 31/10/2020 19:11

Each and every one of us needs to look at OUR behaviour.

Whatever the Government does or does not do or say, it is quite clear that other than going to work and the supermarket for food, few other places are essential, masks are helpful, distancing is necessary etc.

We should all stop blaming and do what we can to protect ourselves in our own circumstances.

LivingOnAnIsland · 31/10/2020 19:11

The "general public" are not ultimately responsible for how the country is managed.

Actually they are, because they vote in general elections. And they are responsible for their own actions, and if they don't follow the rules then they can't blame the government for the rise in cases.

Lifeisabeach09 · 31/10/2020 19:12

No it's the general public that can't behave not the government. They are doing the best they can having never managed a pandemic before & we do have to balance the economy with lockdowns. Problem is so many lefties think there is a magic money tree.

I'd say the govt was far more culpable..EOTHO (yes, yes, important to economy but what message did it send?!), not introducing mandatory maskwearing, not promoting social distancing and handwashing propaganda continuously, and by not introducing curbs on groups and social gatherings sooner, and, generally, not encouraging police to enforce these.
Added to which, schools and unis--why the heck the govt did not insist (and fund!) remote and blended learning, I never know!!! Definitely feasible at the uni level.
England should have had a circuit breaker over half term as recommended six weeks ago.
Our leaders have handled this badly so it is hardly surprising that some members of the general public have also. Govt messaging have been inconsistent, ineffectual and, as usual, too damn late, after all, it is not as if we didn't know winter would be bad--being the virus-ridden season.

OrtamLeevz · 31/10/2020 19:15

@HaudYerWheeshtBawbag

Vast majority are following the rules it’s the idiots at top who don’t know their arse from their elbow.
People are not catching Covid from their member of parliament, are they? Nope - they are catching it from their friends, family, colleagues, pupils and random strangers in the pub.
BoingBoingyBoing · 31/10/2020 19:16

"Actually they are, because they vote in general elections"

Remind me how much we knew about COVID at the last general election, and how many elections there have been since we've known about it?

The government are the ones in charge. They've fucked up time and again. Don't dare to shift the blame onto the public.

Lifeisabeach09 · 31/10/2020 19:17

But following govt rules...

DrManhattan · 31/10/2020 19:21

Watching Boris now. So clueless. Should have locked down 5 weeks ago. What a bell.

PurpleFlower1983 · 31/10/2020 19:21

The fault lies with the government.

romeolovedjulliet · 31/10/2020 19:22

for every person who has ever complained about the handling of the covid, i'd be interested to know how they would have handled it, got it all under control and would get a vaccine pushed through within a month or two.

SunshineOutdoors · 31/10/2020 19:23

As much as I’m complying with the restrictions, I don’t think we should be blaming people. This is a virus and it will spread, I hate the fact it’s us at fault for catching it. Also, we’re not evolved to deal with this world - people will try to social distance etc but it’s going against all of our instincts as social animals. It’s really tough - blaming each other for being idiots and spreading it is so counter productive.

Murraytheskull · 31/10/2020 19:23

I fail to see what a lot of this will do to curb the virus. For me, I still have to do the school run and I still have to go to work (University staff). The only difference is I can't go to the pub or a restaurant if I wanted to and food shopping is going to be a ballache again. My two major areas of risk are still the same as they were.

So its carry on working as usual (to keep the economy propped up) but can't enjoy non working time. All stick, no carrot. No wonder my mental health is nosediving.

I don't actually know what the real answer is to all of this by the way, but to my mind we do the shit stuff in life (work, commute etc) in order to be able to enjoy the good (friends, family, pub etc). And we can't even do that now.

Like bollocks will things be better for Christmas. Total fucking lie.

And when will people learn that lockdowns don’t make the virus magically disappear....... 🙄
