More needs to be done in the Muslim community to root out these fanatics, the problem is that nobody speaks out when they know someone harbours extremist views.
It is insulting when the first thing people say is don’t blame Muslims, instead of being outraged for the victim and exploring why this happens time and time again. Hmm

StoneofDestiny · 01/11/2020 20:43

You cannot give in to extremists - ever. France votes for the government it gets and that supports the constitution.
Nobody gives these murderous fascists any authority over French secular rules.
Nothing in the Quran says anything about not drawing the Prophet. It's offensive only as a symbol of something/someone they revere, in much the same way as some people take offence about the burning of National Flags - a lots of which goes on in some Muslim countries to show their displeasure of the activities of the west.

To be fair, the don’t blame Muslims people are trying to explain why it happens. It’s just that they are so caught up in identity politics that they think everyone is motivated by power and post colonialism, and don’t actually understand anything about extremism or human behaviour.

I think that's a good point. Anyone who thinks not publishing a cartoon would stop attacks is deliberately ignoring that people were attacked in a Church; that people were attacked out shopping, etc. I'm not entirely sure how much pandering they think would 'guarantee' safety. But I do know, they'd be wrong. Because this isn't about cause and effect. It's about extremism and terrorism.

StoneofDestiny · 01/11/2020 22:31

If there were no cartoons there would still be terrorist attacks.

Mainstream faiths need to stand shoulder to shoulder against this. Mainstream Muslim leaders need to speak up and condemns this in a way they are heard.

Muslim leaders did speak up and condemn what happened in France. It’s not fair to ask ordinary Muslims to flagellate themselves to pacify the sentiments of those who blame the majority of the actions of a few. Ordinary Muslims are busy living their lives, leave them alone.

I am talking about Muslim leaders.
Nobody is suggesting self flagellation, or for ordinary Muslims to accept responsibility.
It is important for leaders to speak up, condemn the behaviour of extremists and make sure gullible, isolated people don't get sucked in to extreme behaviour thinking it is what is justified.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 01/11/2020 23:54

Muslim leaders did speak up and very senior Muslim leader in France asked people not to celebrate the prophets birthday this week

They speak out on every occasion but it’s never enough

Terrorists are not listening to them they are listening to those that preach extremism and spread hatred they are under the radar and know who to target

SonjaHeniesTutu · 02/11/2020 00:02

@waltzingparrot

OP as an individual you have been cowed and subjugated by the terrorists and given up your freedom of speech but as a society we absolutely must not.
Excellent post!

I can’t speak for France but the congregation at the MEN bomber’s mosque did just that. They banned it from the mosque, they tried to warn the police that he was dangerous but the police did nothing. Result: several people, including kids, died at a gig.
PhilSwagielka · 02/11/2020 00:15

Fundies are idiots. They really think people are going to want to convert to Islam if they go round chopping old women’s heads off?
