Do you want another lockdown?

RosieCrumpet · 30/10/2020 23:33

YABU - I want a lockdown just like before
YANBU - I don't want to lockdown.
Comment - Any variation on the above.
I'm genuinely curious to see where the majority lie on this - some people will be terrified of losing their jobs and homeschooling again whereas others would love a few more months of WFH or furloughing and extra family time.

No because of the damage it will do to people and businesses.

Yes because I don’t want the virus to kill tens of thousands this winter.

With schools open this won’t be a proper lockdown.

IMO fund schools to rent more space and do blended learning before closing down the economy.

I work in a school and my kids go to another. Covid cases in both and this will continue.

whatisgoingtohappen · 31/10/2020 02:13

(Unless they are run differently rather than being told to get on with it with no real measures in place).

M0mmaM0rn1n4 · 31/10/2020 02:25

Predicted number of deaths at roughly the same rate as earlier in the year

A lockdown seems inevitable

I am happy to comply with the rules

However, it seems that some other people have not/ will not obey the rules

It looks like this could continue for several years

NZ & other countries closed their borders more firmly. What happens when they open up again

It's a balance of lockdown versus freedom of movement

I don't want the virus or my family or friends to catch it

PhilCornwall1 · 31/10/2020 02:26

How is several years sustainable?

Bellabelles · 31/10/2020 02:44

No - I don’t want another lockdown. It will be an economic catastrophe and I can’t see how it can be justified.

2020iscancelled · 31/10/2020 02:49

No because it won’t cause it to go away. It is not a long term solution.

There are far, FAR worst implications of continued economic and services shut down (people are already struggling to get non Covid medial help for instance - you only have to read some of the threads on here to see that - and it’s going to get far worse). Delayed cancer treatments, people dropping dead from heart attacks because they are not going to hospital when they get chest pains bc they are scared (having been fear mongered by the media), extensive and severe food poverty, massively impacted mental health services leading to increased suicides.

The numbers predicted for October never materialised. Listening to front line medical staff they are NOT seeing the levels of illness they were in the summer.
Intensive care beds being “full” doesn’t sound as bad when you are told actually there’s only 6 beds IC in the sodding hospital.

There is also a huge amount of the population who will never develop Covid because of T cell immunity. Why is this rarely spoken about? Because it doesn’t fit the narrative of “Everyone could be affected by this”

People who can safely and securely lockdown then great, go ahead. Feel secure that you won’t get or pass on the virus. Those who NEED to live and work outside of their house for many, many genuine reasons need to be allowed to continue.

There are no more deaths from respiratory illness this year than last. But there will be a long term knock on effect to everyone who has lost businesses, work, economic security, mental health support, medical interventions in long term or undiagnosed issues etc etc

Buccanarab · 31/10/2020 03:19

Honestly? I'm beyond giving a shit about covid now. My life's been well and truly fucked by it to the point I doubt it'll ever recover.
Apparently we're all just meant to sit tight and accept the worst all to save a few thousand or so. I know it's unpopular to say but I honestly don't understand how saving a few thousand lives (at best) is worth destroying the lives of millions.

One things for sure though, if I make it through the next year or so there's absolutely zero chance I'll be contributing to the recovery.

PhilCornwall1 · 31/10/2020 03:30

It is unpopular, but you are right. It's not worth it.

PopsicleHustler · 31/10/2020 04:48

Yes, I do because the numbers need to go down. No one gives a crap about social distancing apart from a select few.
The proof is in the pudding. My work instagram is chocker block with everyone going to parties, weddings, illegal street raves, christening and so on. I'm literally in shock. I understand and respect that you want to attend your brothers weddings and your relatives baby christening but cant we do it while socially distancing and keeping ourselves and other people safe. Every post is full of people hugging and kissing and passing the baby round. Dancing up against each other. It's just ridiculous.

This is not going to go away with all this going on.

We need the lockdown. I work from home and 2 of my children are vulnerable so will be safer and better with me at home. I feel sad for all the other peoples who's lives will be turmoil after and during this lockdown with other work and circumstances going on. I'm just trying to stay positive that we will get out of this.

skeptile · 31/10/2020 05:54

The numbers only need to go down if those numbers are translating into hospitalisations and deaths that are well above ordinary rates for this time of year. There's a bizarre notion extant that ICU occupancies are simply not to be tolerated. '8 out of 8 Covid beds occupied in a 500 bed hospital - capacity reached - shut down the country!' Fuck that. This myopic insanity is destroying the lives of millions.

Frazzled13 · 31/10/2020 06:19

Whatever the government do (and it’s looking like a lockdown) I wish they’d stop fucking leaking it to a couple of papers several days before. A lot of people will now spend the weekend very worried, uncertain of the financial support, worried about family etc while everyone speculates about what our glorious leader might say when he deigns to speak to us.
I’m also already annoyed with the tedious answers that Tory MPs will trot out when asked why they didn’t lockdown a few weeks ago when labour wanted to “well we’ve always said we’ll follow the science, and it wasn’t necessary a fortnight ago but it is now.” Bollocks.
Rant over.

MinnieMountain · 31/10/2020 06:25

From a purely selfish point of view, no.
I want to be able to go to my DM’s funeral in 2 weeks.
I want to be able to swim and to work. These are major factors for my mental health.

emilyfrost · 31/10/2020 06:28

Yes, I want another lockdown. I know my job is secure and would still be there after another furlough, and I thoroughly enjoyed the last one.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 31/10/2020 06:28

No. This virus is the least of our worries. The economy is tanking and so it mental health.

Open the nightingales, take a localised approach but for gods sake, stop non essential travel beyond counties

amusedtodeath1 · 31/10/2020 06:33

No, I don't want one, but sadly I think we've done too little too late (again) to prevent it being necessary.

Mirrorxx · 31/10/2020 06:42

No. We are supposed to be exchanging contracts next week and if there is a month long delay I don’t think we will be moving

Maybenexttime08 · 31/10/2020 07:10

@Mirrorxx - Same. Meant to be moving on 27th November - gutted that it might not happen now

Heatherjayne1972 · 31/10/2020 07:13

No. The economy won’t cope. And it’s just kicking the can down the road - this virus is going no where

A big part of the ‘solution’ should have been the track and trace app If they’d spent time and money concentrating on getting that right we would be in a much better place now
South Korea managed this

Bidl · 31/10/2020 07:14

Yes, I would like another lockdown, but only if schools close too. No point otherwise. Today I saw a group of 20 teens outside Tesco- no masks and no SD.

lovelemoncurd · 31/10/2020 07:15

I don't want one but we need one. That's all there is to it really. It just needs to be total lockdown for a number of weeks as recommended weeks ago by Sage.

millymollymoomoo · 31/10/2020 07:19

Why do people only listen to sage ( who have repeatedly got it wrong )
There are many many eminent scientists over the world who disagree both with their numbers, modelling, trajectories, and the fact that all lockdown does is delay things while causing destruction elsewhere
No way should we be accepting another lockdown. No way

NorbertMeubles · 31/10/2020 07:21

Yes. Should have been done when the scientists recommended it. Again, Boris has done it too late. Quelle surprise.

user1471538283 · 31/10/2020 07:22

The problem is we should have locked down harder and faster the first time. I worked throughout lockdown and it was apparent that we weren't all in it together. I saw no one except my household the whole time. My neighbours had parties and yet were out clapping like sea lions for the NHS. Recently it's been touted as our individual responsibility but people are not wearing masks properly. So I've bought time or mental capacity for we are all in it together lockdown

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 31/10/2020 07:22

No.

But we will get one because people have been arsing around not wearing masks and ignoring the rules of how many can gather and now we’re all fucked.

Feellikefrighteningyeah · 31/10/2020 07:22

Just got DS's mental health back on track. If schools close again it would be devastating for him
