Do you want another lockdown?

RosieCrumpet · 30/10/2020 23:33

YABU - I want a lockdown just like before
YANBU - I don't want to lockdown.
Comment - Any variation on the above.
I'm genuinely curious to see where the majority lie on this - some people will be terrified of losing their jobs and homeschooling again whereas others would love a few more months of WFH or furloughing and extra family time.

Thank you for the link MercyBooth.
I'm a bit shocked how much I agree with her.

CakeRequired · 01/11/2020 20:59

You either have lockdown, or accept people are going to die from covid. That's about your only choices really, keeping schools open is not going to slow it down. Numbers will only continue to rise.

The only way to stop it is close everything down, again. And wait until the numbers are down to zero with a lot of testing done. But that's never going to happen. No one wants it, they want some miracle where things go back to normal while numbers go down. It won't happen. We either go back to normal, accept more people than expected will die from this, or lockdown fully. Anything less prevents the inevitable happening and we just keep restricting for no reason.

Well looks like this 'lockdown' is going to be a pointless hardship. Inbound travel is (apparently) going to continue unrestricted. No checks or proper quarantine. Straight from airport onto busy public transport...

Professor Devi Sridhar retweeted an excellent post from an aviation specialist and frequent flyer, Alex Macheras:

It makes zero sense to restrict outbound international travel without implementing border controls, testing & measures to manage the inbound flow of passengers.

(East Asia’s view on UK: Any progress with #Lockdown2 will be wiped out by UK continuing to reimport the virus)

SheepandCow · 01/11/2020 21:07

Just in case anybody's missed me banging on about it, Professor Devi Sridhar is one of the scientific experts advising the Scottish government.

Bidl · 01/11/2020 22:01

@SheepandCow

Absolutely agree. And people can come and go freely for business. To add insult to injury - it’s not international travel being prohibited in the U.K - it’s Just in England. What’s to stop people travelling to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland if they are determined for a bit of winter sun. It’s nonsense.

Oliversmumsarmy · 02/11/2020 10:08

You either have lockdown, or accept people are going to die from covid

But we are on our second lockdown and people are still dying

Yes to safety measures like masks and SD and wfh where possible and let’s get on with everything.

This lockdown isn’t going to achieve anything. It is just going to delay.
Same results just different days

ToffeePennie · 02/11/2020 10:22

I absolutely do not want another lockdown, the damage the first one did to my family, to our finances and our mental health was quite enough.

It does seem to have worked in other countries though, with them now pretty much back to normal, unlike the UK which has much higher infection now than before the original lockdown.

I think it's unlikely to affect most people as they dont usually need to be admitted to hospital in their daily schedule, but I'd hate for a relative to have a nasty car crash and beh told they need an operation but no beds available etc. That's why I'm still leaning towards just doing it once and properly. Would much rather sacrifice Xmas than have this going on all through 2021 and have us dealing with a problem other countries resolved a year previous.

Rosebel · 03/11/2020 22:54

I can't stand the lying anymore. We all know the government lie constantly but we haven't even started lockdown and they've dropped heavy hints it won't end in December. And didn't BJ say he wouldn't put us in to a second lockdown not so long ago.
We either need a proper lockdown where key workers are truly needed (not just workers who can't work from home so their company uses loopholes to say they are key workers) are the only ones in work or not bother.
I'd actually be in favour of shutting essential shops early too but can see that would make the queues even worse,
It's already been shown lockdown doesn't work. I'd be totally in favour if it worked and If it was for 4 weeks but it won't work and it certainly won't be 4 weeks.

@PhilCornwall1 @SheepandCow

Thanks for the good wishes Flowers

Im sorry you have been in such pain Phil. God this is so shit!!!!!!!!!!

LordLancington · 04/11/2020 02:10

It worked abroad.

Tbh, aside from the more logical reasons, I'd quite like some time off. I've had annual leave refused twice as work is too busy, and xmas is fully booked up, so don't see myself getting any time off this year without a lockdown.

Idunnoyou · 04/11/2020 02:15

Don't mind

Rosebel · 04/11/2020 08:00

Lockdown worked in other countries because they did it properly not the half arsed attempt we, had over here.
The government are pathetic. They don't enforce lockdown but then how can they when the MPs are the ones breaking the rules

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/11/2020 20:18

I would have thought the subsequent infection and death rates say this isn’t true.

Look at the Isle of Man

Locked down, full isolation on return, prison or fines from breaking laws.

COVID free since May

Does work, can work.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 04/11/2020 21:16

No I don't want one

It won't work. There are too many loopholes and exemptions and compliance rates won't be anywhere close to the level needed.

The lockdown ship sailed last March.

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/11/2020 22:23

I was thinking more about Spain and Italy.

The Isle of Man is still in lockdown to the extent you can’t move freely about so until they can we won’t know if lockdown has worked.

Sweden on the other hand no lockdown and down to 0 or 1 death yesterday.

KitKatastrophe · 04/11/2020 22:29

It’s funny because the people screaming “I want my life back” “it’s a load of shit” “we can’t keep locking down then opening up” were the same people clapping on their doorsteps earlier this year. How easily we forget.
Nope, I never clapped for the NHS. Pointless exercise.
I live in a previously "tier one" area. Lockdown seems like a huge overreaction here.

Sweden has introduced new restrictions. www.euronews.com/2020/11/04/coronavirus-sweden-introduces-new-restrictions-as-europe-fights-to-contain-latest-wave

Not that Sweden's very relevant to us. Unless you think we can (overnight) get 50% of the population into living on their own in single person households. Easy to socially distance under those circumstances.

We'd also need to get the NHS up to the standard of the well-funded Swedish healthcare system.

Oh - and part of the reason that Sweden didn't have stricter restrictions was because, unlike here, the majority voluntarily adhered to guidelines. Here, we have moaning and people saying how they won't comply even when it's compulsory.

Good thing for Melbourne that Australia didn't have that same defeatist (false economy) attitude wrt the state of Victoria.

Yes. Very well done to the Isle of Man.

Their effort at the start has paid off. Everything open as normal. Shops, offices, schools, hospitals, entertainment venues.

Life is free on the Isle of Man.

Free from the risk of untimely death, free from the economic damage of uncontained Covid, and free from the danger of potential lifelong disability of Long Covid.

BluebellsGreenbells · 04/11/2020 22:55

People can leave but must isolate on return

Schools open, no social distancing, no masks, shops pubs and bars all open, mass gatherings allowed. Teens having parties, Christmas is being organized. No shop restrictions ...

Pretty normal
