To ask what on Earth wales are doing?

I don’t live in Wales but I’ve heard that they’re having a “firebreak” and shops cannot sell non essential items.

AIBU to think that that is just a step too far and completely over the top? Ok fair enough, tell people to stay at home but surely if someone needs to go shopping for essentials they can buy non essentials whilst they’re in a specific shop.

This has been in the news for about a week, how have you only just heard it?

MaskingForIt · 27/10/2020 19:19

Being able to buy clothes in Tesco isn’t fair on dedicated clothes shops (eg Primark) who have been forced to close.

I agree with the general idea of it, but it has been executed very badly.

Also, people would go in for non-essentials and take their children to size shoes etc. It wouldn’t just be people picking up a non-essential in with their weekly shop.

Missandra · 27/10/2020 19:22

Tesco wouldn’t let a woman buy sanpro the other day as the store had deemed it “unessential “

missmouse101 · 27/10/2020 19:22

I'm in Wales, no one where I live is having a problem with it. We can manage 2 weeks without buying a toaster.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/10/2020 19:23

I don't get it. Clothing is essential.

Lockheart · 27/10/2020 19:25

@Missandra

Yes, and they admitted it was wrong and an error was made.
Twitwooooooo · 27/10/2020 19:25

@Missandra the Tesco thing was swiftly corrected. It seems they had misunderstood the restrictions.

missmouse101 · 27/10/2020 19:25

The Tesco sanpro thing mentioned above was a mistake and is not part of the restrictions.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/10/2020 19:26

It's to discourage us from going out as much as possible. And to limit the number of shops we are in or the length of time we are in the shops for. So only going out for food. Not to buy anything at the same time as our food shop.

Also, as a pp mentioned, it's a fair-play idea to support all the other shops that have had to close who are concerned that the supermarkets and other shops allowed to stay open will get all their business.

Of course, you can still order anything and everything online as normal, so the big winner is online shops.

There has been a fair bit of backlash. Most examples, however, like the bloke who went shopping practically naked as 'clothes aren't essential' have enough of what they are moaning they aren't allowed to buy (books/clothes/stationery) to do without buying new just for the few weeks.

FlyingFlamingo · 27/10/2020 19:26

There are several threads discussing this.

What Wales are doing is following the advice of Sage and we have come out of local lockdowns into a country wide one with a defined end (9th November)

The Conservatives in the Senedd pointed out that it was unfair that supermarkets could remain open and sell clothes/DIY stuff/electronics but clothes shops/DIY shops/electrical retailers had to close, which is a fair point so Mark Drakeford said that only essential items could be sold. There had been some confusion over what an essential item actually is and someone on Tesco Twitter decreed that sanitary towels weren’t essential, which they obviously are.

Most people I know support the lockdown but it’s more mixed about the essential shopping part. I’m on the fence, I can see why they’ve done it but I can also see that there are issues (eg. people needing clean clothes in hospital). I fully support the lockdown, we have an end date and although it’s miserable having half term and not being able to actually go anywhere I feel safer than I would if I was living in England where there doesn’t seem to be any kind of plan at all.

Northernsoullover · 27/10/2020 19:27

Don't worry about us. We'll cope. Its half term here this week and the weather is lousy. I know for a fact I'd have been pottering in Sainsbury's and Tescos clothing if it wasn't for it being banned. There are more worthy things to be outraged about in the world right now (I'm not saying you personally are outraged OP) .

TrufflyPig · 27/10/2020 19:27

I agree with the principle of it, they want to reduce non essential trips to the supermarket and give smaller businesses a chance. It’s only for two weeks.

Fatted · 27/10/2020 19:29

FFS OP, where have you been? Under a rock?!

FWIT, I'm in Wales and we have managed to cope just fine. We needed some house stuff and got it delivered. Yes, I could have waited a fortnight, but DH and I both booked off half term on purpose with the intention of doing stuff around the house.

TrufflyPig · 27/10/2020 19:30

Also I’m getting a bit tired of the ‘I don’t live in Wales/Scotland but......’ brigade. You don’t need to worry about it, doesn’t affect you.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 27/10/2020 19:31

Yeah cause it's all going so fucking swimmingly in England isn't it
Sort your own shit out first eh

Ginnymweasley · 27/10/2020 19:32

Speaking as someone in wales. We are fine. Apart from the guy who went into a local tesco and started ripping stuff off the shelves in protest but he's being done for criminal damage. Its 2 weeks so I really doubt it will actually affect many people. Although my dh works across the road from a big asda and said it's not quieter than normal.

Whenismumhome · 27/10/2020 19:33

@Hobnobswantshernameback

Yeah cause it's all going so fucking swimmingly in England isn't it Sort your own shit out first eh
Hardly any need for that kind of response. I was feeling sorry for the people of Wales and sympathising with them but sure!

Something for you OP

Ginnymweasley · 27/10/2020 19:34

I'm not sure the people of wales need your sympathy tbh. Most people I know support the lockdown.

FlyingFlamingo · 27/10/2020 19:34

You don’t need to feel sorry for us. We are doing just fine, thanks. Patronising much?!

BritWifeinUSA · 27/10/2020 19:35

It’s badly thought-out. If the idea is be “fair to other shops that can’t open” it’s not working. People will just order toasters, jumpers, duvets and stuff from Amazon. Like they are struggling for business.

snowspider · 27/10/2020 19:35

Live in Pembrokeshire and I'm fine with it, and so are neighbours etc etc. There is a sense of support for the measures around our area. Being rural. I think many people are used to being prepared and not drifting round shops for a fortnight is not too much trouble.

Whenismumhome · 27/10/2020 19:36

@FlyingFlamingo

You don’t need to feel sorry for us. We are doing just fine, thanks. Patronising much?!
And I’m glad to hear that but I can’t see how it’s patronising.

I was saying to DH how unfair I think the restrictions are. That’s me showing sympathy towards the people of Wales considering it’s not a very nice situation to be in, don’t see how that is patronising

OP posts:
Peace43 · 27/10/2020 19:37

I’m in Wales and you tell you what we are doing.... nothing! Absolutely nothing. It’s lockdown!!

Hobnobswantshernameback · 27/10/2020 19:37

You don't see how you are coming across
As patronising
Really?
Hmm
