I don’t live in Wales but I’ve heard that they’re having a “firebreak” and shops cannot sell non essential items.

AIBU to think that that is just a step too far and completely over the top? Ok fair enough, tell people to stay at home but surely if someone needs to go shopping for essentials they can buy non essentials whilst they’re in a specific shop.

I think for certain there will be a Wales set of conditions following, but I trust the Wales approach.

feelingverylazytoday · 27/10/2020 20:09

@Chicchicchicchiclana

When we were first in lockdown in the UK as I recall it absolutely everything except food shops were closed. How long did that last for? We all muddled through.
Nope. Poundland was open. B and M was open. Smyths toy shop was open. Argos was open in Sainsburys. Bike shops were open.

“I think the English media as usual is whipping up a storm out of nothing to try and quash any notion of independence, support for which has surged as of late. They do the same for Scotland, Sturgeon can’t fart without them curtain twitching! It’s belittling.”

@TrufflyPig exactly your comments!

I joined Yes Cymru as a result of all this nonsense and now fully support welsh independence! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I joined recently too @Allthestarsarecloser

HamSandwichKiller · 27/10/2020 20:11

I'm living in Wales and I think the Welsh government has vastly overreached their authority. I hope they all get voted out in May for making some people's lives more difficult in unprecedented times.

Shame on them for ignoring families who wait until payday to make "non-essential" purchases.

Oh and if it lasts 2 weeks it'll be a bloody miracle Sad

Welshmaenad · 27/10/2020 20:11

I was practically the poster girl for the "essential goods" brigade. Day 1 of lockdown, my tin opener broke.Grin

Asda brought me one today, with my online shop, no dramas. Wales will be alright mun.

Whenismumhome · 27/10/2020 20:13

@Crazzzycat

Oh dear, you are getting quite a harsh response here OP. As others have pointed out, it’s the title that comes over as a bit patronising. As if we’ve all lost our minds in Wales.

You’re obviously not aware that there have been quite a few threads now full of people who don’t live in Wales being outraged by what is going on in Wales. I’m not saying you don’t have the right to an opinion unless you live here, but I think it’s the number of threads on the issue, combined with quite skewed reporting in the media, that’s making us feel a bit sensitive here in Wales.

I can only speak for myself, but I’m quite happy to have a government that is not afraid to take action when needed 🙂

I should have worded my title better. For that, I apologise.

@TrufflyPig 1000 new members in the last month apparently. People are starting to see through the crap 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Shiverywinterbottom · 27/10/2020 20:13

I’m in Wales and people have lost all sense of perspective.
It’s 2 weeks. I’m sure people can manage without stuff for 2 bloody weeks.
The supermarkets will still sell you things if you need them, they’re not banned or prohibited. Just closed off to stop browsing and to try and encourage people to go to the shops just for essentials like food, and to try and put supermarkets on a more even footing with retailers who’ve had to close.

Can’t believe the hoo ha people are making of this. I’m quite happy to be back in lockdown.

Tumbleweed101 · 27/10/2020 20:14

My concern is that one government does it and others follow and those ones might not only control what we have access to for just two weeks but for longer periods of time.

Asking places to close for two weeks might be deemed acceptable and support should be given to those businesses but restricting items and deciding for a whole population what is and isn’t essential starts creeping over that threshold of being acceptable. It isn’t what’s happening right now but the potential for this kind of thing to be abused by those in power at other times once a precedent has been established.

TrufflyPig · 27/10/2020 20:16

@Allthestarsarecloser You can get Yes Cymru face masks, I might get one for my next trip to Tesco 😂

Mydogmylife · 27/10/2020 20:16

@TrufflyPig

The poor Welsh people have to deal with their lives being ruined all for a nationalist political stunt.

Now this is patronising!

Agreed!
Shiverywinterbottom · 27/10/2020 20:17

I’ve also joined YES Cymru and fully support Welsh independence.

NainAGP · 27/10/2020 20:17

Much better to have an FM with his eye on the ball and our best interests at heart than a PM just waffling round the subject with no clear purpose. Yes a couple of things have gone wrong but the shops have been at fault not the government. In an extreme situation I expect a local shop manager would try to help practically, though not by looking for loopholes.

Sadik · 27/10/2020 20:18

Happy enough with the Welsh govt approach here. Drakeford is boring AF, but frankly that seems OK compared to BJ and co right now!

Support for Scottish independance has rocketed also
Batshittery · 27/10/2020 20:18

At least the Welsh politicians have the balls to try and take some positive action. Unlike Boris with his ridiculous tiers that aren't having any impact whatsoever.

DontBeShelfish · 27/10/2020 20:21

Most people I know are broadly in support of the measures. We also know there's likely to be a second short lockdown in the New Year. I think it's probably better that than the enormous confusion and damage being caused by the English model.

Spacerader · 27/10/2020 20:22

The first time around in lockdown i used to get so bored I would just go and browse the home eare sections of shops. So it makes complete sense that the have put the restrictions in place to stop people like me wandering about Grin

Its really not that big a deal. Its only two weeks, and there is a clear end date.

Mydogmylife · 27/10/2020 20:22

Independence !!! Sorry spelling errors due to fat fingers

FlyingFlamingo · 27/10/2020 20:25

‘Nationalist political stunt’ you say? From that famous nationalist Mark Drakeford, of the national party of Wales, Labour? [hmm

StripyHorse · 27/10/2020 20:25

YABU

It would have been nice to have had more notice about supermarkets selling non essentials (not just 24 hrs)

It would have been good for shops to be given more thorough guidance - and better still a discussion with retailers early on to come up with a proper plan.

But... that is not unique to Wales (twitter announcements at 10pm, DfE guidance released Fri evening etc).

The lock down itself? I'm prepared to give it a go if it reduces transmission.

tywysoges · 27/10/2020 20:26

@feelingverylazytoday Poundland is open, B&M is open, Argos in Sainsbury’s is open...

Mamimawr · 27/10/2020 20:26

I also live in Wales and I'm pleased that the Welsh Government have taken the steps they have.

IF this firebreak works and we see a reduction in the cases and deaths in a few weeks will you still pity us OP?
