To ask what on Earth wales are doing?

I don’t live in Wales but I’ve heard that they’re having a “firebreak” and shops cannot sell non essential items.

AIBU to think that that is just a step too far and completely over the top? Ok fair enough, tell people to stay at home but surely if someone needs to go shopping for essentials they can buy non essentials whilst they’re in a specific shop.

@snowspider

Live in Pembrokeshire and I'm fine with it, and so are neighbours etc etc. There is a sense of support for the measures around our area. Being rural. I think many people are used to being prepared and not drifting round shops for a fortnight is not too much trouble.
I live in north wales and I think it's the same here. People generally don't go aimlessly shopping as you have to drive a decent distance to get to any good shops so in reality it's not really affecting many people round by me.

@Hobnobswantshernameback

You don't see how you are coming across As patronising Really? Hmm
By showing support and sympathising with people under the new restrictions? How in the high heavens is that patronising?

Would you rather I took an uncaring attitude towards it?

eatthatbueno · 27/10/2020 19:42

You're not being patronising OP. You're entitled to talk about whatever you want. Don't see where you live matters in the slightest.

PrincessBuggerPants · 27/10/2020 19:42

That isn't that different to what happened during UK lockdown at first? Some supermarkets had clothes blocked off and DIY shops wouldn't sell paint for example.

Northernsoullover · 27/10/2020 19:42

Honestly, we don't need sympathy. No faffing with tier 1, 2 whatever. A short sharp lockdown. I support it. Most people I know do too.

I know. I was only trying to be nice and supportive towards the people who live in Wales but apparently that makes me patronising

Yeah cause it's all going so fucking swimmingly in England isn't it Sort your own shit out first eh
Rather be in England then stuck under house arrest in wales to be honest Confused
CutToChase · 27/10/2020 19:44

It's insane how people cant take a little criticism without throwing it back on England. Over sensitive much?

Halliehallie9828 · 27/10/2020 19:44

You could buy clothing in supermarkets at any point and I bought litres upon litres of paint in lockdown when it first happened in England..
JustCallMeGriffin · 27/10/2020 19:45

@Missandra

Tesco wouldn’t let a woman buy sanpro the other day as the store had deemed it “unessential “
Tesco fucked up on the tweet but the reason san pro couldn't be bought was because of a massive theft (£20k) from that section of the shop which was why it was taped off.

I just love how non-Welsh living people want to keep criticising how our country is managing things.

Drakeford didn't deliver the intent of the message very well in the first instance. The clear intent was to stop giving supermarkets even more advantage over non-food stores with a secondary and worthwhile aim of reducing how long people are wandering round in store "browsing". Sadly shitty media and hairy knuckled internet folk whipped it up into something it's not.

Frankly I'm far happier with how the Welsh Goverment are handling this than Boris and cronies. Scotland, NI and Wales are pretty much keeping step with each other and making real effort to reduce the spread of covid. England has tiers that mean nothing if you can leave your tier 3 area to wander around a tier 1 area it's a fucked up plan and a rule of 6 that barely anyone is abiding by.

Don't you worry about Wales. We're fine...but we would be better if people didn't spread bullshit!

FlyingFlamingo · 27/10/2020 19:46

Because what on earth do we need sympathy for? You feel sorry for us because our government actually gives a shit? Really? At every stage the reasoning behind every decision has been provided and the FM has stood up and answered questions from journalists and the public. Most people support these decisions (of course some don’t but that would be the same everywhere) because we know why they are doing what they are doing and they know how hard it is and they say thank you.

Meanwhile, Boris has no plan, avoids questions, and sells contracts to his mates who fail to deliver. Maybe we should feel sorry for you Hmm

Purpleice · 27/10/2020 19:46

I was a bit miffed I couldn’t buy books in Tesco (was wanting a couple of easy read novels for the holidays), but I think, on the whole they are doing a good job. Got a telephone doctor appointment within 24 hours. Everything essential is still functioning. So many schools round here have had to close or part-close that it feels safer to just shut down for a bit.

Akrotiri1 · 27/10/2020 19:46

We went to our local agricultural merchant last sat, the first day of the 'fire break'. We needed some fencing equipment as had a stock fence broken, so being animal welfare, assumed we could justify it as 'essential'.

The merchant was open as normal, but the staff were so rude - as soon as we walked in the door it was the spanish inquisition to why we were there, and was what we wanted to buy essential. I then got told off as they said only one of us should have come in, although both my partner and I were buying goods separately.

What we needed was on the 'open' shelves, so if the goods are available to buy, since when can shop staff dictate what is deemed essential or not?

We were in and out in less than 5 mins, wore masks, hand sanitized at the entrance and socially distanced, so conformed to all regulations.

Utter madness and won't be shopping there again.....

I don’t live in England so whatever Boris does really doesn’t have an impact on me.

I was trying to be nice and show support to you guys but clearly I was wrong to do that Hmm

This is interesting , the way the English press whipped this up over the weekend looked like the people of Wales were unhappy about this . glad to put straight from people of Wales .

Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/10/2020 19:49

When we were first in lockdown in the UK as I recall it absolutely everything except food shops were closed. How long did that last for? We all muddled through.

cardibach · 27/10/2020 19:50

I was saying to DH how unfair I think the restrictions are. That’s me showing sympathy towards the people of Wales considering it’s not a very nice situation to be in
OK @Whenismumhome, I’ll explain why it’s patronising. You have decided the restrictions are unfair, suggesting you know what’s good for Wales better than the Welsh Government or the many Welsh people who have told you they (we) understand and support the measures in the whole.
You’ve said it’s ‘not a nice situation to be in’ as though it’s really bad - again suggesting you know what it’s like better than we do.
We don’t need sympathy, there’s nothing to have sympathy for. We are making a few sacrifices for the greater good, not being bullied And badly treated.

Mydogmylife · 27/10/2020 19:50

Well op, that didn't really go as you expects did it ?

elizabethdraper · 27/10/2020 19:50

We are coping fine with same restrictions in Ireland

Mydogmylife · 27/10/2020 19:51

Callcat · 27/10/2020 19:51

I don't super love it, but its fine. It's 2 weeks. I'm glad I'm here in Wales, and think Drakeford is excellent. I'd take one of him over 10 Boris'!

Completely off topic but there’s a little map going round of independent bookshops selling books in Wales, I will find you the link. Smile
JustCallMeGriffin · 27/10/2020 19:52

@Whenismumhome stop pretending you were lending support/showing sympathy.

Your thread title is quite clear To ask what on Earth wales are doing?

The insinuation is you think Wales and it's inhabitants notice the W rather than the insulting w are doing something stupid.

You can pretend all you like, but you were not posting in a friendly manner. You aren't fooling anyone!

Well if that is how it comes across then I apologise but that is not what I meant at all!

I meant it from the POV that it must be tough on the Welsh people.

YABU

This has been in the news and numerous MN threads for a week now!

I’m in Wales and agree with the firebreak. I think the restrictions on what you can buy are ridiculous but it won’t kill anyone for 17 days so I’m just quietly getting on with it.

I think your pity would be better given to the areas of England with double the rates of anywhere in Wales but still allowed to carry on in a much more normal way of life and spread coronavirus as they do so.
