To ask what on Earth wales are doing?

I don’t live in Wales but I’ve heard that they’re having a “firebreak” and shops cannot sell non essential items.

AIBU to think that that is just a step too far and completely over the top? Ok fair enough, tell people to stay at home but surely if someone needs to go shopping for essentials they can buy non essentials whilst they’re in a specific shop.

I live on the border of Wales so have lots of friends in Wales, I know no one in real life who supports this.
I was addressing the supporters posting here...
And my apologies for my phone auto correcting mark drake ford's name.

Cherry321 · 27/10/2020 20:45

@Hobnobswantshernameback

Yeah cause it's all going so fucking swimmingly in England isn't it Sort your own shit out first eh
Yup.... this
Elphame · 27/10/2020 20:48

I've been making good use of my Amazon account to get a jump on my Yule shopping.

It's a shame for all the local shops I won't need to use this year but it's clearly what Drakeford wants us to do.

FlyingFlamingo · 27/10/2020 20:49

I was going to point out the water thing but @cardibach beat me to it. I think we also have 15% of the worlds wave energy along our coasts or something? That the U.K. government won’t ‘allow’ us to harness?

islockdownoveryet · 27/10/2020 20:50

Those supporting the 'firebreak' I wonder how supportive you will be when it's extended beyond 2 weeks . Hmm

You can’t wait 17 days?
cardibach · 27/10/2020 20:50

@Elphame have you thought of waiting until November 10th? If you are abandoning local shops to buy online from Amazon that’s entirely 8n you, not the Welsh Government.
Talk about entitled and deliberately stroppy.

It won’t be. There may be another in January or February, but this will be 2 weeks. It’s very clear. Feel free to come back and @ me to say I told you so if I’m wrong. I’m confident it won’t happen.
Pinklittle · 27/10/2020 20:53

I'm in Wales, think the lockdown is ridiculous and am totally fed up of being told what I can and can't do. Thanks for thinking of us OP god only knows what the next few months have in store :( xx

TrufflyPig · 27/10/2020 20:56

@islockdownoveryet I’ll still support it and they’ve told us it is a distinct possibility.

cardibach · 27/10/2020 20:58

@TrufflyPig they haven’t, in fact said lengthening this one is a possibility. It’s very clear in the messaging that it will end on the 9th, there’s no review and no specific effect they are looking for. Drakeford said we won’t see the effects for a week or two after that. They have intimated that there could be further separate lockdowns though.

What would you do then? There’s rapid increases in hospitalisations and the percentage positivity of tests is also increasing. Are you so fed up of being told what you can and can’t do I. Regards to, say, the rules of the road? Fancy driving on the other side for a bit? Maybe without a seatbelt? Don’t give way to incoming traffic at a junction? No?
mw90 · 27/10/2020 21:03

I'm in mid-wales and supportive of the Fire break, there was plenty of warning, I'm glad it's being done now as that was the advice from Sage, if I need something non-essential I'll either wait or order online. I like the way it's being handled over here.

Pinklittle · 27/10/2020 21:04

@cardibach you are clearly gunning for a row with someone on here tonight.
I am fed up with it and that's ok you have your opinion I have mine, end of.

CounsellorTroi · 27/10/2020 21:05

I'm in Wales and support the lockdown.

Elphame · 27/10/2020 21:07

I guess irony is wasted here.

The only winner in this whole debacle is Amazon. He's destroying what's left of the Welsh economy on something the SAGE experts have already said won't work.

Many of the small shops and hospitality businesses won't re-open. Our local pub closed its doors for good 2 weeks ago having spent goodness knows what on covid preventative measures but the owners have given up with this latest blow.

It looks like we'll have another one in January. Then what? Another in March? Followed by June? August maybe?

TrufflyPig · 27/10/2020 21:07

Sorry @cardibach, What I meant to say (but said it badly, too much wine 😂) was that the possibility of further lockdowns has been communicated but I’d 100% support a further extension of this one if cases were still high.

Grilledaubergines · 27/10/2020 21:09

People of England, bank the animosity. We’re bloody damned if we do and damned if we don’t!

Commenting on a situation in another country doesn’t mean we think it’s going fantastically in England, but yeah crack on and get all get up.Hmm

Why am I gunning for a fight when my opinion is similar to lots of people? That’s how yours read to me - you were disagreeing with the majority (your right, of course) in an aggressive way.
Also, I Di t really listen to people who think they can end a discussion with ‘End of’. It suggests you really do think your view is right and all the little people can shut up now you’ve spoken.

Umm...SAGE recommended a short lockdown... Amazon only win if people can’t wait a few days or work out how to order online from local shops - most of the ones near me can sort you out. The economy won’t do so well if the virus gets a hold, either. I’m fed up of the false dichotomy of economy or health measures. It’s the virus that’s affecting the economy, destroying confidence in shopping etc. Letting it get a real hold won’t help that at all.
cardibach · 27/10/2020 21:15

No worries @TrufflyPig
It’s been so badly reported I’d understand if people didn’t have the info - I was more making sure other posters didn’t run away with the wrong idea!

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 27/10/2020 21:15

It’s 2 weeks, people need to get a grip!

TrufflyPig · 27/10/2020 21:19

Dim probs @cardibach, I agree with you regarding the reporting of information.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 27/10/2020 21:21

I’m in Wales. I’m miserable about it but would prefer a planned break now than cases rising and then an extended lockdown later. Hopefully it will knock the cases in the higher areas down. The other part of me thinks it is all a huge conspiracy planned so the Iron Bank can make money. Grin

wantmorenow · 27/10/2020 21:31

RCT is 4 miles from me and I applaud Drakeford for implementing firebreak. My kids and I will follow it strictly, they miss out on some face to face teaching but our local hospitals risk being overwhelmed. We have our own field hospital in town which opened to patients 10 days ago. We are in a pandemic but some seem to have lost sight of this. A timely reminder and action was needed and here's to hoping our curve flattens soon again.
