To not let neighbour park on our drive

Sexnotgender · 27/10/2020 18:45

Neighbour 2 up approached DH the other day to ask a favour.

He’s getting a new car and doesn’t want to park it on the road in case it gets damaged. There’s plenty of parking and it’s a fairly quiet road but he wants to park it off road. Can’t park on his own driveway as his wife’s car is there. Wants to use ours.

Was I unreasonable to say a flat out no?

@Cloudburstagain

In mumsnet land, the answer is yes, as we must all share and not get upset, it’ll cause very little damage/wear/ you are not using it/ being a good neighbour etc
In real life the answer is No.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 28/10/2020 12:42

Just say the drive is in cinstant use by the gardner and family members. You wouldn’t like to bother him evey day to move the car when someone needs to use the drive.

Bargebill19 · 28/10/2020 12:42

@frazzledasarock if it the one @TwoLeftSocksWithHoles found ... run it over with her car. Problem solved!

On the basis that only an action hero would need such a pallic symbol ostentatious and impractical vehicle. Grin

He therefore needs a suitably french name.

Are you sure neighbour doesn’t think your husbands vague reply wasn’t a yes?

What will you do if he parks on your drive and you come home from Asda to find he’s parked comfortably on your drive?

I hope not. He’ll get told very swiftly to move the horribly expensive ugly ass car.

Honestly, avoid this. As others have said I'd be firstly worried of potential burglary, your house insurance may be affected by a very expensive car in the driveway possibly? Also entitlement if people who 'just want to ... with your stuff/property' end up entitled fuckers. It could end up him raiding your insurance, you'll likely need some sort of insurance to cover court costs just in case he decided to get arsey if something happened to his car or someone got damaged by his car ... this list is endless!

He could claim part of your property permanently also, so beware of this.

Lastly, they're noisy, you don't know if he'll be firing up the thjng early mornings, making a noise around your home and disturbing you

Flat out no from me / too many things that can cause grief

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/10/2020 12:52

@Cloudburstagain

Such a strange request. You have a very large drive, which you obviously pay for, and he wants to use it because he does not want to pay for a property with more parking.

So if somebody has a swimming pool, should their neighbours all use it because they do not have one? Or if someone has a large garden to play in, should someone else have access to it as they do not want to pay for a large garden! Or perhaps people should use their neighbour’s spare, Ines side gardens to dry their washing on if they do not use that land and someone else could use it??

Following that logic, if someone has a Hummer then all the neighbours should be able to use it when they need a stupidly big car. Grin
Sexnotgender · 28/10/2020 12:52

The specs of the H3T:

2 and a bit metres tall ok
2 and a bit metres wide ok
Nearly 5 and a half metres long? Surely that’s not right?

OP posts:
Sexnotgender · 28/10/2020 12:53

And there’s nothing small about that!

OP posts:
Bargebill19 · 28/10/2020 12:54

Yep sounds about right. As I said upthread, there is a reason they’ve been banned from warehouse car parks locally.

Sexnotgender · 28/10/2020 12:55

Who the fuck needs a car that size?!

OP posts:
Sexnotgender · 28/10/2020 12:56

I’ve got an estate and this monster is over a metre longer! Wow.

People with small members.

Bargebill19 · 28/10/2020 13:07

Maybe he’s starting a prom hire car business? The only place a have ever seen these things for sale, did seem to have a lot of Eastern European buyers on the forecourt ..

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/10/2020 13:16

All a “small“ hummer means is not a stretch limousine style one, I imagine. And sorry but it is hilarious that they live in a terraced property and want this car. As I said upthread, they could upgrade to a larger house instead of wasting money on 2 new / newish cars, especially the amount one of those beasts costs.

When I was in my mid 20’s a guy working at the same place as me at the time had a Mercedes C class and a one bed terraced property. He literally could have bought a 2 bed for 10k more and got a little run around. He was only a 10 min drive in traffic from work..... just why?

TeamLucille · 28/10/2020 13:21

Are you sure he's not a famous French person? Known in France, not here I mean...

How would I know?

I live in a very boring part of the world. I don’t imagine famous people are desperate to live here!

I think the length is a problem for a driveway, he may not fit on his own driveway even if his wife is prepared to park on the road. However the width is likely to be a problem for parking on the road if it's a narrow residential one. It's a similar size to a Transit van, not quite as long as the Transit but a bit wider, so it'll be like having a workman's truck always parked on the road.

Sexnotgender · 28/10/2020 13:31

The length will absolutely be an issue for his drive. I really hadn’t appreciated quite how enormous this thing was.

Another neighbour has an Audi estate and that only just fits in the drive.

OP posts:
LostAcre · 28/10/2020 13:45

@Sexnotgender

Or it's brand new, immensely expensive and electric, in which case he should be charging the over-priced beast on his own drive with his own electricity.

I’d assume it’s brand new as he doesn’t want to park it on the road. If it was just an old banger I don’t see why he’d care. He currently parks his old car on the road.

Which incidentally he said he’s also keeping. Not sure why 2 adults need 3 cars?

Can you imagine trying to park a Hummer in a standard car parking space?

I’ll bet he wants to keep his older car so he can still use multi-storey car parks etc when he needs to without getting stuck or getting fined for taking up 2 spaces.

Longdistance · 28/10/2020 13:49

We had a guy up in the next road ask if he could park outside ours. We have a double driveway but also two spaces, these two spaces are for guests of the residents, it’s a private road. My dh met him with a flat no as all the residents own it, and apart from the fact I don’t want a huge 4x4 and van outside my house blocking the light. Go buy a house with a driveway you cheapskate! The guy has a work van, a huge 4x4 for himself and his wife has an average sized car. Yeah, they all fit outside his terraced house with no driveway 🤔

2bazookas · 28/10/2020 13:52

If you have room and he won't get in the way of your own vehicles, I's say " Yes, (subject to the above and any other rules) that will be fine, and the charge will be a tenner a day thats £70 quid a week whether or not you use it every day, payable monthly in advance. ".

Either he'll never ask again. Or if he takes the bait , you'll have a very nice little annual income to stash away for your next car, or childrens university costs.
Loftyloft · 28/10/2020 14:14

Is your DH going to say no now, or let Jacques get it and then say no? Either way it will be quite fun.

Hummers also need rustproofing - US don’t routinely grit roads so you have to rustproof all imports. Another reason why they are ridiculous cars.

Sexnotgender · 28/10/2020 14:17

He’ll just say no next time he sees him. Not going out of our way to speak to him.
