To not let neighbour park on our drive

Sexnotgender · 27/10/2020 18:45

Neighbour 2 up approached DH the other day to ask a favour.

He’s getting a new car and doesn’t want to park it on the road in case it gets damaged. There’s plenty of parking and it’s a fairly quiet road but he wants to park it off road. Can’t park on his own driveway as his wife’s car is there. Wants to use ours.

Was I unreasonable to say a flat out no?

Honestly, no

Tell him you're not insured if you damage it. You don't want people to think that because you have bling on the drive there's bling indoors..
Will he fix any damage the car does to your drive? The weight of can cause sinkage, and if it's not electric then any leaks on the drive. Plus the lack of privacy of him just being there in and out of his car.

Weirdo

Ontheboardwalk · 27/10/2020 23:54

I’ve got a drive, it’s not a massive drive but a decent drive, I buy cars that fit my drive

Next door have the same drive but massive cars that overhang the pavement and cause issues in the turning circle

If you want a drive for your big arse cars buy a car with room to park

Ontheboardwalk · 27/10/2020 23:55

Buy a HOUSE with room to park

Suzi888 · 27/10/2020 23:57

No, what if it got damaged whilst on your driveway Hmm anything could happen. YANBU

CrikeyPeg · 28/10/2020 00:01

Emagads no, I'd be so embarrassed to have a Hummer parked on our property, makes me think of newly-minted drug lord wannabees Grin

If he can afford a brand new Hummer, he can afford to make space so they can park it in front of their own house, surely?

alibongo5 · 28/10/2020 00:06

@GU24Mum

Definitely no need to say yes. We're the ones with the house nearer the road and only room easily for one car................so the other one is on the road outside. Lots of our neighbours have spare room but it's literally never occurred to me to ask them to use their drives!
Because you're a normal person! As others have said as a one off maybe but not a permanent arrangement - all sorts of issues there including taking you for granted, what happens if it gets damaged, etc. But more, WHAT THE FUCK. NO NORMAL PERSON WOULD ASK THIS.
AmICrazyorWhat2 · 28/10/2020 00:10

My neighbors around the corner have an electric car and they’ve installed a charging station outside their house. Imagine if he did that and the Hummer had to be parked in a certain position to be charged- or you had his extension cords across your drive.

You’ve dodged a bullet, OP.

FinallyFluid · 28/10/2020 00:18

No

No

And thrice again no..........

We park on a neighbours drive.

We did so at her invitation, she had to give up her car, earlier than expected (80) and she was not happy with the drive looking empty.

She died last year, I miss her dreadfully, I used to pop over at least once a week to chat, and make sure she didn't need anything from Tesco, in my mind I was going over for thirty minutes or so, if we got going I could be there for an hour or more , and then head to Tesco... Grin

When she died the family asked us to continue using the drive, the house looked occupied, etc....

We are ever mindful that there will come a time when we have to move the second car,( probate) but I would never ever approach people with a functioning drive.

That is CFery of the highest order. IMO

ClaireP20 · 28/10/2020 00:26

@Sexnotgender

I feel bad as our drive is enormous but I don’t want to start faffing with asking him to move if we have visitors or the gardener wants access. It’s a really big car he’s getting and it would make it difficult to get passed with a lawnmower etc.
You are calling it your drive, but actually.it may be paves over but it is actually your front garden. I can't believe the cheek of him quite frankly, no matter how big your 'drive'. And he's clearly going to make out to his insurance company that it's parked on his own drive to get lower premiums. Well done for saying no!!!
lilmoopoo · 28/10/2020 00:37

Nooooooo, there's no way I would offer our drive out for a hummer. Apart from the fact that I wouldn't want to look at the godawful car nor would I want the responsibility but I also wouldn't want to attract thieves to my home. Hummers are just too much temptation to some!

If he's that worried he can tell his wife to park on the road or failing that buy a car that's not quite so stupid and reeks of mid life crisis in a vain attempt to disguise his obviously small penis Hmm

LifesNotEnidBlyton · 28/10/2020 00:40

No way. YANBU it's your property, outside or not, and he wouldn't ask, you wouldn't entertain the idea, to put his food in your fridge because he'd not the room! What if you, or your DC if you have them, accidentally scratch it? Who even asks that?

AmIbeingTreasonable · 28/10/2020 03:08

Not unreasonable at all.
BoomBoomsCousin · 28/10/2020 05:19

The new Hummer EV isn't expected to be available for another year!

What's he doing asking you for drive space - trying to find ways around his wife's arguments against it, maybe?!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 28/10/2020 05:34

Who in their right mind buys one of those eyesores??? Let alone asks to park it on someone elses drive lol.

Interesting. Sounds like it! I didn’t realise they weren’t going to be available for a while.

Say yes. £150.00 per day. Payable 1 year in advance, in cash.

No refunds for unused days.

rwalker · 28/10/2020 06:22

My worry would be is if it gets scratched or damaged then causes problems
It has to be a no.

Nineteenfiddlytree · 28/10/2020 06:41

He might be a bit of an enthusiast and is buying an old, clapped out one to do it up. Happen his wife has put her foot down and doesn’t want it on her drive or outside her house? Confused Grin

Oh god, I’d almost rather a new one than a doer upper he wants to tinker with on our drive.

BorderlineHappy · 28/10/2020 06:51

I have googled the new Hummer, you would need a ladder to get in to it.

Anyway, you know what they say about men with large cars. Obviously an extension for something.

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/10/2020 06:54

Flat no from me as well. They chose a house with a small drive. Maybe that is all they could afford. However, two expensive cars could be sufficient for a deposit on a house with a decent driveway. I never understand why people prefer to spend their cash on a posh car rather than a better house.

bluetongue · 28/10/2020 07:08

I can completely believe this. It sounds like something my neighbours would have tried on before we completely fell out.

They are the type with more money than class and think that rules don’t apply to them.

In fairness their house does look nice. It’s just quite close to the road and terraced so limited space to extend a driveway.
