To not let neighbour park on our drive

Neighbour 2 up approached DH the other day to ask a favour.

He’s getting a new car and doesn’t want to park it on the road in case it gets damaged. There’s plenty of parking and it’s a fairly quiet road but he wants to park it off road. Can’t park on his own driveway as his wife’s car is there. Wants to use ours.

Was I unreasonable to say a flat out no?

@ChocShot90

Bet he's insured it as 'parked on a private drive' for a cheaper insurance premium and now wants yours
Possibly.

Given the car apparently isn’t going to be available to buy until next year I suspect he’s trying to convince his wife.

It’s alright love, number 57 will let me park it on their drive.

Say, yes of course, until your drive is widened and you can get both cars on. No, you're not widening your drive? Sorry I can't help you. That way you look cooperative.

cameocat · 28/10/2020 09:47

Also I'd be concerned about insurance. What if it was damaged whilst in your property or stolen. Is he going to make you liable (what if one of your cats (the aforementioned nose to tail ones) scratched the paintwork?

Haffdonga · 28/10/2020 10:07

Are you going to give him an answer or just wait to see if he asks again?

If I was you I'd drop a note round with a clear and polite no in writing, so there can't be any nonsense when the car turns up and he starts saying Oh but your husband said it would be alright. I asked last year and I wouldn't have gone ahead with buying it of he hadn't said it was ok.

Haffdonga · 28/10/2020 10:10

And from your description of a nice terrace with limited parking it sounds like you live in a fairly built up town or city. He just shouldn't be getting a hummer. In fact nobody should ever be getting a hummer. Ever.

It’s a reasonable size town, not a city.

The houses are early 20th century I think? Mine was built late 19th.

I’m generally of the opinion no one really needs a 4x4 either unless you live rurally/on a farm or for towing. My opinion of him may be coloured by the fact he already owns a 4x4😂 but I realise that’s my issue.

Nope, shan’t say a thing. I’m a big coward.

Bearing in mind the size of those ridiculous beasts, it could also damage your driveway going in and out. They are very, very heavy.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 28/10/2020 11:54

Do you live in Iraq OP?

BorderlineHappy · 28/10/2020 12:06

Parking his big Hummer on your drive,is that an euphemism
😂😂

How did you guess! Was our Victorian home a giveaway 😂

Anyway. Just spoke to DH and it is an old Hummer. So slightly confused as to why he can’t just park it on the street.

The guy reassured DH it was just a ‘small’ one. Not sure that’s a thing?

I expect its too wide and will block the carriageway too much.

A friend of mine had one that he hired out as a wedding car/prom car etc. It was very popular. He had to get rid of it in the end as it was just too expensive to run.

MeridianB · 28/10/2020 12:16

Hang on, he's 'assured' your DH it's small. It sounds like they are agreeing an arrangement OP!

prettyscarybird · 28/10/2020 12:21

No. Just No.

Bargebill19 · 28/10/2020 12:22

There is no such thing as a small hummer.

No definitely not. DH and I are on the same page.

This is a distinct possibility. It’s a very much residential street and not super wide. BUT, there are buses going up and down it to drop off children at the school so I can imagine it would impact their ability.

I think you might have cracked it.

I am totally placemarking for Marvin’s strop when he’s told no Grin

Ah! A small Hummer, it must be one of these!

To not let neighbour park on our drive
Bargebill19 · 28/10/2020 12:34

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

Good call !- can see why you would want to out that safely in a neighbours drive- less likely to get run over. 🤣

He needs a new name.

This will tell you how much I’ve interacted with the guy who wants a massive favour... I had NO idea that he was French😂

He therefore needs a suitably french name.

Pierre, Jacques, Claude

Cloudburstagain · 28/10/2020 12:37

Such a strange request. You have a very large drive, which you obviously pay for, and he wants to use it because he does not want to pay for a property with more parking.

So if somebody has a swimming pool, should their neighbours all use it because they do not have one? Or if someone has a large garden to play in, should someone else have access to it as they do not want to pay for a large garden! Or perhaps people should use their neighbour’s spare, Ines side gardens to dry their washing on if they do not use that land and someone else could use it??

Sexnotgender · 28/10/2020 12:39

I like Jacques😊

I just googled the smallest Hummer and it seems to be the H3T model. It’s still fucking massive.

Are you sure neighbour doesn’t think your husbands vague reply wasn’t a yes?

What will you do if he parks on your drive and you come home from Asda to find he’s parked comfortably on your drive?
